Why the Spleen Lifts and the Stomach Sinks
This unit already paired the spleen and stomach as biao-li partners. This lesson explains the specific, opposite jobs that make the partnership work.
這個單元已經把脾胃配成表裡的搭檔。這一課要解釋的是,讓這個搭檔真正運作起來的那兩個具體、相反的工作。
Unit 109: Why the Spleen Lifts and the Stomach Sinks
An earlier lesson in this unit paired zang and fu organs into biao-li partnerships, including the spleen and stomach, without detailing what makes that particular partnership work in practice. Chinese medicine describes the spleen and stomach as dividing digestion into two opposite directional jobs: the spleen "raises the clear," lifting refined, usable nutrients upward toward the lung and heart to be distributed as qi and blood; the stomach "descends the turbid," pushing waste and unusable residue downward to be expelled.
This division of direction is treated as just as essential as the division of labor itself. A spleen that fails to lift is traditionally associated with a cluster of "sinking" symptoms — this unit's earlier lesson on qi sinking specifically named the spleen as the organ most often behind it — including fatigue, a feeling of heaviness, and in more pronounced cases, a sense of organs literally dropping. A stomach that fails to descend is traditionally associated with the opposite cluster: nausea, bloating, and belching, as waste that should be moving downward and out instead backs up.
Reading spleen and stomach as a paired-but-opposite system, rather than as two organs each independently doing "digestion," is what allows this framework to explain why a single meal can produce two very different kinds of complaint depending on which half of the pair is malfunctioning — heaviness and fatigue pointing toward a lifting problem, nausea and bloating pointing toward a descending problem — even though both symptoms trace back to the same digestive event.
