Why Deep Breathing Depends on the Kidney, Not Just the Lung
An earlier lesson treated the breath as a qi exercise. This lesson explains why a truly deep breath is traditionally credited to an organ nowhere near the lungs.
稍早一課把呼吸當成一種氣的練習。這一課解釋,為什麼一個真正深的呼吸,傳統上被歸功於一個離肺很遠的臟腑。
Unit 110: Why Deep Breathing Depends on the Kidney, Not Just the Lung
An earlier lesson in this unit's qi section treated slow, deep breathing as a practice that supports qi. That lesson credited the practice's effect to the lung alone, which handles breathing in an obvious, mechanical sense. Chinese medicine adds a second organ to the process: the kidney is traditionally described as "receiving qi," anchoring the qi the lung inhales and drawing it down deep into the body rather than letting it stay shallow at the chest.
This is offered as the explanation for a very concrete, physically noticeable difference between a shallow breath and a deep one: a shallow breath, confined to the upper chest, is read as qi the lung has taken in but the kidney hasn't yet anchored; a deep breath, one that a person can feel reaching down toward the lower abdomen, is read as the kidney successfully receiving and anchoring that same qi. A kidney weak in this receiving function is traditionally associated with breathlessness that gets worse specifically on inhaling rather than exhaling, and with a felt need to strain to complete each breath.
This also explains why this course's earlier lesson on fear making qi descend named the kidney specifically as the organ overwhelmed by a sudden downward surge: an organ already responsible for anchoring qi at the body's depths is the same organ traditionally described as being overwhelmed when qi rushes downward too fast and too forcefully to be anchored properly. The kidney's receiving-qi function and its qi-anchoring role in that earlier lesson are two descriptions of the same underlying job, seen from two different angles.
