The Lung's Two Opposite Jobs: Dispersing Out, Bringing Down
An earlier lesson called the lung the most delicate organ. This lesson explains the two constantly balancing jobs that make it so easily disrupted.
稍早一課把肺稱為最嬌嫩的臟腑。這一課要解釋的是,讓它這麼容易受擾動的那兩個不斷互相平衡的工作。
Unit 108: The Lung's Two Opposite Jobs: Dispersing Out, Bringing Down
An earlier lesson in this unit described the lung as the "delicate organ," easily disturbed because of its direct exposure to outside air and its position at the body's highest point. That lesson didn't detail what the lung is actually doing when it's working correctly. Chinese medicine describes the lung's function as two opposite movements held in constant balance: "dispersing" outward, and "descending" downward, together called the lung's dispersing-and-descending function.
Dispersing describes the lung sending qi and fluids outward to the body's surface, warming the skin, opening the pores to release sweat, and distributing defensive qi to guard against external invasion — an outward, expanding motion. Descending describes the opposite: the lung sending qi and fluids downward toward the rest of the body and toward the kidney for storage, keeping the airway clear by moving used air and fluid down and out rather than letting them accumulate and stagnate at the top.
The two movements are traditionally described as needing to happen in balance, not simply both happening at maximum strength: too much dispersing relative to descending is traditionally associated with an unproductive, dry cough and excessive sweating, while too much descending relative to dispersing is traditionally associated with a sense of tightness in the chest and unreleased phlegm. This dual, opposite-direction design is also offered as a deeper explanation for why the lung was called delicate in the earlier lesson — an organ balancing two opposite jobs at once has more ways for something to go wrong than an organ with only one job to do.
