The Liver Stores Blood While You Sleep
This unit already connected blood to the heart's circulation. This lesson looks at where the body is said to keep blood in reserve.
這個單元已經把血跟心的循環連結過。這一課要看的是身體被說成把血儲備在哪裡。
Unit 87: The Liver Stores Blood While You Sleep
An earlier lesson in this unit described the heart as governing blood's circulation, moving it through the body. Chinese medicine assigns a second, complementary job to a different organ: the liver stores blood, holding a reserve supply and releasing more of it into circulation during activity, then drawing a portion back into storage during rest, most notably sleep.
This is offered as the traditional explanation for a pattern many people notice without having a name for it: lying down and sleeping seems to visibly restore something that standing and moving around visibly drains. Under this framework, activity calls blood out of the liver's reserve to support the eyes, tendons, and muscles, all of which are traditionally linked to liver function; rest allows that blood to return to storage, which is why insufficient sleep is traditionally associated with symptoms in exactly those areas — tired eyes, stiff tendons, cramping muscles — rather than generalized fatigue alone.
The liver's storage job is also why this course's earlier organs unit connected mood swings and irritability to the liver specifically, alongside its now-familiar link to blood: a liver that isn't storing and releasing blood smoothly is traditionally read as an organ under strain, and blood is understood, going back to this unit's own earlier lesson on qi and blood, as one of the substances that calms rather than agitates. A liver low on its own reserve has less of that calming resource on hand to draw from.
