The Five Spirits Housed by the Five Organs
This course has connected organs to blood, fluids, and emotion. This lesson adds one more layer: each organ is said to house a distinct aspect of mind.
這門課已經把臟腑跟血、津液、情緒連結過。這一課再加一層:每個臟腑被說成藏著一種不同面向的心神。
Unit 88: The Five Spirits Housed by the Five Organs
This unit's lesson on the six fu organs and its later lesson on qi, blood, and body fluids described the organs as processing physical substances. Chinese medicine adds a less physical layer on top of that framework: each of the five zang organs is said to house a specific aspect of mind, together called the "five spirits" — the heart houses shen (the presiding spirit, roughly overall consciousness), the liver houses hun (an ethereal soul linked to planning and dreams), the spleen houses yi (intention, tied to thought and memory), the lung houses po (a corporeal soul linked to instinctive, physical sensation), and the kidney houses zhi (willpower).
This layered structure explains a claim that otherwise sounds strange in translation: that a physical organ can house something as intangible as "soul" or "will." The point isn't that Chinese medicine considers the liver a literal seat of dreaming in an anatomical sense, but that each organ was traditionally credited with a distinct psychological function alongside its physical one, so that disturbances traditionally linked to mood, memory, willpower, or sleep could each be traced to a specific organ rather than treated as a single undifferentiated category of "mental symptom."
This is also why the heart is granted a coordinating role above the other four: shen, housed in the heart, was traditionally described as overseeing the other four spirits the way a ruler oversees officials — a role that maps directly onto an idea from elsewhere in this unit, that the heart functions as the body's presiding organ. A disturbance to any one of the five spirits could, under this view, eventually register at the level the heart is responsible for overseeing, which is one reason sleep and emotional disturbances are so often discussed together in this framework rather than as separate categories.
