Spring: Encouraging Growth Without Forcing It
Sleep later, rise earlier, walk loosely, and don't bottle up frustration — spring's advice, all pointing one direction.

Unit 33: Spring: Encouraging Growth Without Forcing It
Spring is matched to wood and the liver in the five-element framework introduced earlier in this course, and Chinese medicine's classic advice for the season follows directly from that match: the season's job is encouraging growth, not forcing it. The Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic recommends going to bed a little later and rising earlier in spring, then taking a walk in loose, comfortable clothing — letting the body's energy stretch outward and upward the way new shoots do, rather than staying wrapped up and contracted as in winter.
The emotional advice for spring follows the same logic. Because anger is matched to the liver, and the liver governs smooth, unobstructed qi flow, spring is considered a season when suppressed frustration does particular damage — qi that wants to move outward, like a spring shoot, but is blocked, builds pressure with nowhere to go. The classic recommendation isn't to avoid strong feelings entirely, but to avoid bottling them, and to give the mood room to move the way the season itself is moving.
None of this is about performing enthusiasm on command. It's about not working against a direction the season and the body are already leaning toward. A person forcing themselves to stay indoors, wrapped tightly, holding in frustration during spring is, in this framework, fighting the season on every front at once — physical posture, activity level, and emotional expression, all pointed the wrong way at the same time.
