Winter: Storing Rather Than Spending
Sleep late, wait for the sun, and stop draining what you'll need later — winter's advice, read as one idea.
晚起、等太陽出來、別耗盡以後會需要的東西——冬天的建議,其實是同一個概念。
Unit 34: Winter: Storing Rather Than Spending
Winter is matched to water and the kidney in the five-element framework, and its classic advice runs in the opposite direction from spring's: the season's job is storing, not spending. The Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic recommends going to bed early and rising late in winter, "waiting for the sunlight" rather than rising in the dark — the reverse of spring's instruction to rise early, and a direct match to water's pattern of stillness, depth, and conservation.
The same logic extends to physical activity and sweat. Because the kidney is said to store a person's inherited constitutional strength, and because excessive sweating was described earlier in this course as something that drains qi directly, winter is considered a poor season for intense exercise that produces heavy sweating. Moderate movement is still encouraged, but the classic advice draws a clear line between staying active and deliberately draining the body's reserves during the season meant for building them back up.
The emotional dimension follows the pattern too: winter is associated with fear, matched to the kidney, and the classic advice is neither to chase excitement nor to dwell in anxiety, but to keep the mind as calm and settled as the season itself — closer to quiet contentment than to either fear or forced cheerfulness. Winter's entire set of instructions, read together, describes one coherent posture: conserve now, so there is something to spend later.
