Living with the Body's Organ Clock
Why sleeping before eleven matters, and why an afternoon headache might be a clue, not a coincidence.
為什麼十一點前睡覺很重要,以及為什麼每天下午的頭痛可能是線索,不是巧合。
Unit 32: Living with the Body's Organ Clock
Chinese medicine describes a twenty-four-hour cycle in which each of twelve two-hour periods is associated with peak activity in a particular organ, following the same twelve meridians introduced earlier in this course. The pattern is often called the organ clock, and it gives a time-based answer to a question this course has asked from several angles: not just what an organ does, but when it's doing its most important work.
A few points on this clock carry the most practical weight. The period from eleven at night to one in the morning is associated with the gallbladder, and from one to three in the morning with the liver — together considered the window in which blood is renewed and detoxified most efficiently, which is the basis for this course's earlier advice to sleep before eleven. The period from five to seven in the morning is associated with the large intestine, offering a time-based explanation for why a morning bowel movement is considered a healthy sign rather than a coincidence.
The organ clock isn't a rule that a person must be awake or asleep at exact minutes to stay healthy — bodies and schedules vary, and rigid anxiety about the clock defeats its purpose. Its real use is as a rough map: symptoms that reliably show up at the same time of day (a headache every afternoon, a cough that worsens every night) are treated as a meaningful clue pointing toward a specific organ's current state, not treated as a random coincidence of timing.

1. According to the passage, what does the organ clock give a time-based answer to?
2. According to the passage, why is the 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. window considered important?
3. According to the last paragraph, how should the organ clock actually be used?
This lesson explains a time-based framework, not a diagnostic rule. A symptom that reliably appears at a certain time of day should still be discussed with a licensed doctor.
這是以時間為基礎的框架說明,不是診斷規則;可靠地在一天中特定時段出現的症狀,仍然應該與合格醫師討論。
