Two Kinds of Meridian-Related Illness, According to the Classics
The classical texts don't lump every meridian-related illness into one category. This lesson covers the two-way split they use instead.
古典經文不會把所有跟經絡有關的疾病都丟進同一個類別裡。這一課要講的是它們用的那種兩分法。
Unit 113: Two Kinds of Meridian-Related Illness, According to the Classics
This unit's lessons on meridian pathology — referred pain, sinew channels, connecting channels, cutaneous regions — have generally described problems tracing back to a meridian without distinguishing between different kinds of meridian-related illness. An early classical text on meridians, the Ling Shu, draws exactly that distinction for each of the twelve main meridians, sorting the illnesses associated with each one into two categories: "movement-caused disease" and "generated disease."
Movement-caused disease describes disorders traditionally understood as arising from a disturbance in the meridian's own qi flow — its movement — producing symptoms that tend to appear suddenly along the meridian's actual pathway, such as pain that follows the meridian's course closely. Generated disease describes a broader category: disorders the meridian is associated with through the organ or tissue it connects to, which can include symptoms with no obvious direct connection to the meridian's physical pathway at all, tracing back to the meridian by association with its organ rather than by direct route.
This two-way split matters for the same reason the root-and-branch theory covered in a previous lesson matters: it turns a single meridian into a source of two functionally different kinds of information, one about disturbances following its physical course directly, the other about disorders in whatever organ or tissue it's paired with. Reading a symptom through this classical lens means asking not just which meridian is involved, but which of the two categories the symptom actually belongs to — a distinction the classics themselves considered worth making explicit, unit by unit, for every one of the twelve meridians.
