The lights in your classroom, the screen at the train station, and the little light on a charger are all LEDs, and an LED is a semiconductor. In a 3D model, connect a battery and watch electrons and holes meet and turn into light. Change the color, turn the battery around, and then mix three LEDs into one pixel.
An LED is a semiconductor that turns electricity straight into light. It has two layers: n-type, with spare electrons, and p-type, with holes. When a battery pushes them together, an electron drops into a hole and gives off its extra energy as light. The size of that energy step sets the color, and different semiconductor materials have different steps.

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. This is the tiny chip inside an LED, greatly magnified. Blue dots are electrons and pink dots are holes. With the battery connected forward, watch them meet in the middle and send out light. Try the other colors, then connect the battery backward and see what changes.

A teaching model, not to scale. A real LED chip is tiny, its layers are far thinner than shown, and the electrons, holes, and light are much too small and fast to see. The wavelengths (630, 525, and 465 nanometers) are examples inside the usual ranges for red, green, and blue LEDs.

Reading ·
Look around you. The lights on the ceiling, the traffic light at the corner, the big screen at the station, and the tiny light that tells you a charger is working are probably all LEDs. LED stands for light-emitting diode. And here is the surprise: an LED is a semiconductor, a close cousin of the chips in this series.
In Lesson 1 you saw that adding a few other atoms to a semiconductor changes it. One kind of atom gives spare electrons and makes n-type material. Another kind leaves empty places called holes and makes p-type material. An LED is simply a layer of n-type and a layer of p-type joined together. The place where they touch is called the junction.
Connect a battery the right way, and it pushes the electrons and the holes toward the junction. When an electron meets a hole, it drops in. As it drops, it gives up some energy, and that energy leaves as a tiny packet of light called a photon. A huge number of these, one after another, make the glow you see.
What about the color? It depends on how big the energy step is. A bigger step makes bluer light, and a smaller step makes redder light. The size of the step is fixed by the material, so engineers choose different semiconductors for different colors. The plastic cover does not decide the color. The crystal inside does.
Red LEDs came first, in the 1960s. Blue was much harder, and it took until the early 1990s. That mattered a great deal. With red, green, and blue together, a screen can show every color. And a blue LED covered with a yellow material called phosphor gives white light, the kind that now lights our homes.
An old light bulb works by making a thin wire so hot that it glows, and most of its energy is lost as heat. An LED turns electricity into light directly, so it uses less power, makes less waste heat, and lasts longer. The next time you switch on a lamp, remember: you are using a semiconductor.

Three LEDs, One Pixel · 三顆 LED,一個像素

Mixing light is different from mixing paint. Light adds up, so more colors make the result brighter, and all three together make white. This is called the RGB color model. Your screen shows the mix only roughly.

1927
Long before anyone used the word LED, the Soviet inventor Oleg Losev created one from silicon carbide in 1927. Light that comes from a material when electricity passes through it is called electroluminescence, and it is how every LED works.
1962
In 1962 Nick Holonyak was working at a General Electric laboratory when he demonstrated a semiconductor device that gave off visible light. It was the forerunner of the first commercial LEDs. Those early LEDs were dim and came only in red, and they were used as small indicator lights.
Blue needed a different material, and it was very hard to make well. In the early 1990s three scientists from Japan, Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura, finally developed blue LEDs. Their work brought white lighting and full-color LED displays into practical use, and in 2014 they won the Nobel Prize in Physics.
White · 白光
No single LED chip makes white light. One way is to mix red, green, and blue LEDs. The more common way is to put a phosphor over a blue LED. The phosphor turns part of the blue light into yellow, and the mix looks white.
