The lines on a chip are far smaller than a speck of dust, so a chip factory must be cleaner than any place you have ever been. Staying that clean takes water and electricity. In a 3D factory, follow the water from the city pipe to the wafer and back again, then find the three biggest users of power.
A chip factory, or fab, uses water and power for one main reason: cleanliness. Wafers are rinsed again and again with ultrapure water, which is much cleaner than drinking water. Fans push filtered air through the cleanroom without stopping, and the machines themselves need a lot of electricity. Because water is precious, fabs clean their used water and use it again.

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. In “Water,” follow the drops: city water is made ultrapure, rinses the wafer, and flows to a reclaim tank. Move the slider to change how much is recycled, and watch the fresh water coming in. Then choose “Power” and press the three buttons to see where the electricity goes.

A teaching model, not a real fab. A real fab is far larger and holds many more machines, and its water system has many more steps. The slider is yours to move: it starts at 85% because one chipmaker reports that its systems can reclaim more than 85% of the water used in making chips. The two power numbers are for single lithography machines measured in 2020.

Reading ·
You already know that the lines on a chip are measured in nanometers. That makes dust a giant. A particle only one fifth as wide as a line can ruin a chip. So the factory where chips are made, called a fab, has one great enemy: dirt. Almost everything unusual about a fab comes from the fight to stay clean.
Start with water. Making a chip takes many steps with chemicals, and after these steps the wafer is rinsed. Tap water will not do. It carries minerals, tiny particles, and germs, and they would stay on the wafer when the water dried. Fabs use ultrapure water instead: water with almost everything removed except the water itself.
Ultrapure water is made in stages. First the water is filtered. Then it is pushed through very fine membranes and special materials that pull out the dissolved minerals. Last comes a final polishing just before the water is used. A large modern fab uses several million gallons of this water every day.
Water is precious, so fabs do not simply throw it away. Used water is collected, cleaned, and sent back to be used again. One chipmaker reports that its systems can reclaim more than 85 percent of the water used in making chips. Some fabs also make their ultrapure water from cleaned city wastewater instead of fresh water.
Now the electricity. Chips are made in a cleanroom, where fans in the ceiling push air down through very fine filters, and the air is used again and again. The temperature and humidity are tightly controlled as well. Ordinary city air holds about 35 million particles in every cubic meter. The air in a cleanroom may hold a few thousand, or fewer.
The machines need power too. The newest lithography machines, which print with extreme ultraviolet light, use about ten times as much electricity as the older kind. So the next time you hear that a fab needs a lot of water and power, you will know why. It is the price of being clean enough to build something so small.

Cleanrooms are sorted into classes by how many particles are allowed in one cubic meter of air. Each step down in class number means ten times fewer particles. Choose a room and see.

In the picture, each yellow dot stands for 10,000 particles, so an ISO 5 room has less than one dot. The limits come from the international standard ISO 14644-1 and count particles of 0.5 micrometers or larger. Ordinary city air is about the same as ISO 9. Chip factories often use ISO 7 or ISO 5 rooms.

We learn that water and electricity are a dangerous mix, and with ordinary water that is true. But it is the minerals dissolved in water that carry most of the current. Ultrapure water has almost none, so it conducts electricity very poorly. In fact, fabs check how pure their water is by measuring how poorly it conducts.
Reclaimed · 再生水
As chipmaking has grown, so has the water it needs. To take less fresh water, some manufacturers have begun to make their ultrapure water from reclaimed wastewater: used water from cities or factories that has been cleaned.
