What Is Philosophy?
The questions that are left when the facts run out, and the method Socrates invented for working on them.
Philosophy is the disciplined examination of the beliefs we rely on most and question least, carried out by giving reasons and testing them.

What Is Philosophy?
01The question behind the questions
A four-year-old asks why the sky is dark at night, and you answer. She asks why the sun goes away, and you answer again. By the fifth why you have usually reached one of two walls. The first wall is ignorance: there is a fact of the matter, and you do not happen to know it. The second is stranger. You have run out of facts altogether, and what is left is a question such as why there is anything at all, or how you know you are not mistaken about all of it. No further observation would settle a question like that. Philosophy is what people do at the second wall.
02A name and a legend
The word is Greek: philosophia, from philein, to love, and sophia, wisdom. An ancient story, told by Cicero some five centuries after the supposed event, credits it to Pythagoras, who is said to have declined the title sophos, wise man, and called himself only a lover of wisdom. The story is probably legend, but it has survived because it captures something true. A philosopher is defined by a relation to wisdom, and the relation is desire rather than possession.
這個字是希臘文:philosophia,由 philein(愛)與 sophia(智慧)組成。
03Beginning in wonder
Plato has Socrates say that “philosophy begins in wonder” (Theaetetus 155d), and Aristotle agreed: “it is owing to their wonder that men both now begin and at first began to philosophize” (Metaphysics 982b). The wonder they had in mind is not the pleasant awe of a sunset. It is closer to puzzlement, the discomfort of noticing that something you took to be obvious does not, on inspection, make sense. Everyone knows what time is until asked to say. Everyone knows what a fair share is until two people claim the same thing.
04The Socratic turn
Socrates (c. 470–399 BCE) made a method of that discomfort. He wrote nothing. What we have are portraits by people who knew him, above all Plato, and in those portraits he does one thing again and again: he finds someone who claims to know what courage or justice or piety is, asks for a definition, and tests it against cases the speaker himself accepts. A general says that courage is standing firm in the line; Socrates points out that soldiers sometimes fight bravely while retreating. The definition is revised, tested again, and fails again.
The technical name for this cross-examination is the elenchus, and its usual result is aporia, a state of being at a loss. Socrates considered that result a gain. A person who has discovered that he does not know is at least in a position to start looking.
05What philosophy is not 哲學不是什麼
Three neighbors help to mark the borders. Philosophy is not science, because its questions are not settled by measurement, though it reasons about what measurement can show. It is not religion, because it accepts no conclusion on authority, though it asks many of the same questions. And it is not mere opinion, because a philosophical claim has to be argued for, and an argument can be checked by anyone.
The discipline lives on that last point. You are free to believe whatever you like, but once you give reasons, your reasons become public property, and other people may show you that they do not support what you thought they did.
06The map 地圖
Over twenty-five centuries the questions have sorted themselves into branches. Logic studies what follows from what. Epistemology asks what knowledge is and whether we have any. Metaphysics asks what there is and what it is like: time, causation, the self, free will. Ethics asks how one should live, political philosophy how we should live together, and aesthetics what beauty and art are. Around these have grown the “philosophies of”: of mind, of language, of science, of religion, of education. The borders are porous. Ask whether a machine can think, and within a few minutes you will be doing metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics at once.
07Not only Greece
The Greek word should not mislead us about ownership. Confucius died about a decade before Socrates was born, and by then he had spent a lifetime asking what makes a person humane. The Buddha, whose dates are less certain, taught in the same era that what we call a self is a process and not a thing. Neither had a word for “philosophy.” The Chinese term 哲學 was coined only in 1874, by the Japanese scholar Nishi Amane, to translate the European word.
Yet a tradition does not need the label to do the work. Wherever people have given reasons for claims about knowledge, reality, and the good life, and have answered objections to them, philosophy has been going on. This series therefore follows three lines, Greek, Chinese, and Indian, and pays attention to the places where they meet.
08Why bother
Bertrand Russell faced the obvious complaint, that philosophy never seems to settle anything, and gave two replies. First, the complaint is partly an illusion: when a philosophical question becomes answerable, it gets a new name. Physics was once “natural philosophy”; psychology left home in the nineteenth century. What remains under the old name is, by definition, the unfinished business.
Second, the unfinished business is worth doing for its own sake. Philosophy, he wrote, is to be studied “not for the sake of any definite answers to its questions,” but “for the sake of the questions themselves; because these questions enlarge our conception of what is possible.” A mind that has never doubted its own assumptions is confined by them. Socrates put the point more severely at his trial. The unexamined life, he told the jury, is not worth living.

Try it: the elenchus
Three questions Socrates actually asked, with the answers his companions actually gave. Choose the definition you find most convincing and see what happens to it. Every step follows a dialogue of Plato; the reference is given under each reply.
Choose the answer you find most convincing. ·
Five tests for any definition
- 1
Is it a definition, or only an example? A list of brave acts does not say what makes them brave.
- 2
Is it too narrow? Look for a clear case of the thing that the definition leaves out.
- 3
Is it too broad? Look for something the definition lets in that plainly does not belong.
- 4
Is it circular? Check whether the word being defined, or a near synonym, has slipped into the definition.
- 5
Does it conflict with something else you believe? If it does, one of the two has to go.
Now write your own definition of friendship, fairness, or respect, and run the five tests on it. Nothing you type leaves this page.

In his own words
The Apology is Plato’s version of the speech Socrates gave at his trial in 399 BCE. (Apologia means a defense in court; he apologizes for nothing.) Two short passages carry the lesson.
Plato, Apology 柏拉圖《申辯篇》 · translated by Benjamin Jowett (public domain)
Well, although I do not suppose that either of us knows anything really beautiful and good, I am better off than he is,—for he knows nothing, and thinks that he knows; I neither know nor think that I know. In this latter particular, then, I seem to have slightly the advantage of him.
Notice how modest the claim is. He does not say “I know that I know nothing,” which would contradict itself. He says he does not think he knows what he does not know, and that this gives him a slight advantage.
…and if I say again that daily to discourse about virtue, and of those other things about which you hear me examining myself and others, is the greatest good of man, and that the unexamined life is not worth living, you are still less likely to believe me.
The famous line sits in a subordinate clause, inside a sentence about not being believed. He has just been found guilty and is explaining why he will not accept exile on condition of silence. Note also “examining myself and others”: the examination is turned on himself first.
Both sides ·
Objections and replies
Philosophy makes no progress. After twenty-five centuries philosophers still disagree about everything, while a first-year physics student knows more than Newton did.
Russell’s reply is that solved problems are renamed and leave the field, so what remains is always the unsolved part. A second reply is that progress in philosophy is often negative: we now know why a great many tempting answers fail, and that is knowledge. A critic may fairly press the point, however. If no positive answer has ever been secured, on what grounds do we call the activity a form of inquiry at all?
The elenchus only destroys. Socrates refutes every answer and offers none, and his victims leave humiliated, having learned nothing.
In the Meno, Socrates leads a boy to see that his confident answer to a geometry problem is wrong, and then asks whether the boy is worse off for it. Before, he thought he knew and would not have looked for the answer; now he knows that he does not know, and wants to find out (Meno 84a–c). Clearing away false confidence is the first step of learning. Whether Socrates took that step kindly is another matter, and Athens evidently thought he did not.
“The unexamined life is not worth living” is elitist. It condemns most of the human beings who have ever lived.
One defense reads the line narrowly: Socrates is speaking of himself, explaining why he could not live silenced. Another reads “examined” modestly, as the ordinary practice of asking whether you are living as you think you should, which requires no schooling. On either reading the claim is easier to defend than the slogan suggests. Read at full strength, as a verdict on other people’s lives, it is very hard to defend.

Dharma and the West ·
A view from the Dharma
The Buddha was also a master of the question. An early discourse (Aṅguttara Nikāya 4.42) sorts questions into four kinds: those to be answered directly, those to be answered after drawing distinctions, those to be answered with a counter-question, and those to be set aside. The third kind is what Socrates did for a living, and the second, vibhajja, “analysis,” gave one early school its name.
The fourth kind marks the real difference. Socrates held that examination is itself the good life, and he pursued a question wherever it led. The Buddha set certain questions aside, among them whether the world is eternal and whether it is finite, on the ground that pursuing them does not lead to the end of suffering. For him, inquiry is governed by a practical aim. Whether that restriction is a limit on philosophy or a philosophical position in its own right is a question this series will return to (Dharma and the West, D21).
