A good deductive argument does two separate jobs: its conclusion follows from its premises, and its premises are true. Logic can check the first without knowing anything about the second.

What Makes a Good Argument?

01Reasons on the table

In ordinary speech an argument is a quarrel. In philosophy it is something quieter and more useful: a set of statements, the premises, offered as reasons for accepting another statement, the conclusion. To give an argument is to put your reasons on the table where other people can inspect them. There are then exactly two ways it can fail. One or more of the premises may be false, or the conclusion may not follow from the premises even if they are all true. The whole of logic grows out of keeping these two failures apart.

02Validity: a matter of form

Take the most famous example in the subject. All humans are mortal; Socrates is human; therefore Socrates is mortal. If you grant the two premises you cannot consistently deny the conclusion. An argument with this property is called valid: it is impossible for all of its premises to be true while its conclusion is false. The premises are then said to entail the conclusion.

Aristotle (384–322 BCE) saw that this necessity has nothing to do with Socrates or with death. It holds by virtue of the pattern alone. Replace the terms with letters, as he was the first to do, and the pattern still compels: if A belongs to every B, and B belongs to every C, then A belongs to every C. Whatever you put in for the letters, true premises will never lead to a false conclusion. With that step, the study of reasoning became a science of forms.

03Validity is not truth

The definition has a consequence that surprises almost everyone at first. Validity says nothing about whether the premises are in fact true. “All fish can fly; all whales are fish; therefore all whales can fly” is a perfectly valid argument. Every statement in it is false, and yet the conclusion follows: if the premises were true, the conclusion would have to be.

The reverse also happens. “All poets are human; Li Bai is human; therefore Li Bai is a poet” has two true premises and a true conclusion, and it is invalid. The quickest way to see this is to keep the form and change the content: all poets are human; Socrates is human; therefore Socrates is a poet. The premises are still true and the conclusion is now false, so the form cannot be trusted, and it never could. This is the method of counterexample, and it is the logician’s basic instrument.

04Soundness: validity plus truth

An argument that is valid and also has true premises is called sound. Soundness is what we actually want, because only a sound argument guarantees its conclusion. The division of labor is worth noticing. Whether an argument is valid can be settled from an armchair. Whether its premises are true usually cannot: that depends on biology, or history, or whatever else the premises bear on. Logic transmits truth from premises to conclusion. It does not supply the truth in the first place.

05Four patterns worth knowing by name

Much everyday reasoning runs on “if.” Two patterns are valid. Modus ponens: if P then Q; P; therefore Q. Modus tollens: if P then Q; not Q; therefore not P. Each has an invalid twin that looks almost the same. Affirming the consequent: if it rained, the street is wet; the street is wet; therefore it rained. (A street cleaner may have passed.) Denying the antecedent: if it rained, the street is wet; it did not rain; therefore the street is not wet. A wet street does not rule out other causes, and that is all it takes for both twins to fail.

06When the conclusion goes beyond the premises

Everything so far concerns deduction, where the premises are meant to guarantee the conclusion. Most reasoning in science and in life is of another kind. From “every swan observed so far has been white” to “all swans are white” is an inductive step: the conclusion says more than the premises do, and so it can be false even when they are true. Inductive arguments are therefore never valid, and it would be a mistake to blame them for that. They are judged by strength, and a strong one makes its conclusion probable. Whether that standard can itself be justified is a famous problem, taken up in lesson A8.

07Three inventions

Logic was invented at least three times. In China the later Mohists, in the third century BCE, analyzed disputation and held that an explanation must bring out the reason for a claim: In India the Nyāya school set out a five-step inference that became the common property of Hindu and Buddhist philosophers: the hill has fire; because it has smoke; wherever there is smoke there is fire, as in a kitchen; this hill has smoke; therefore it has fire.

The Indian pattern differs from Aristotle’s in one instructive way. It insists on an example, the kitchen, so that the general rule is tied to a case both parties have seen. A Greek syllogism asks only whether the conclusion follows. An Indian inference asks in addition how the rule is known. That second question, as we shall see, is exactly where Aristotle’s critics attacked.

08Why form matters

It may seem that validity is trivially easy to get, and in a sense it is: for any conclusion at all, one can invent premises that entail it. That is why a valid argument settles nothing by itself, and why serious disagreement is nearly always about premises. Yet the discipline of form is what makes such disagreement productive. Set an opponent’s reasoning out in valid form, supplying in its strongest version whatever was left unsaid, and you will see which premise carries the weight. You then know precisely what the two of you disagree about, and in turn what evidence would bear on it. Philosophers call this the principle of charity. It is good manners, and it is also the fastest way to find out who is right.

The Prior Analytics is the first treatise on formal logic in any language. It opens by saying what a deduction is; three chapters later, letters replace words.

Aristotle, Prior Analytics I.1–4 亞里斯多德《前分析篇》卷一第一至四章 · translated by A. J. Jenkinson (public domain)

A syllogism is discourse in which, certain things being stated, something other than what is stated follows of necessity from their being so.

Prior Analytics 24b18–20

Close reading · 精讀

Three phrases carry the definition. “Certain things”: more than one premise. “Something other”: the conclusion must be new, which rules out merely repeating a premise. “Of necessity”: this is the first statement of what we now call validity. Syllogismos here means deduction in general, a wider sense than the three-line pattern the word later came to name.

If A is predicated of all B, and B of all C, A must be predicated of all C.

Prior Analytics 25b37–39

如果 A 述說一切 B,而 B 述說一切 C,那麼 A 必定述說一切 C。

Close reading · 精讀

This plain sentence is one of the great inventions. By writing A, B, and C, Aristotle shows that he is talking about every argument of this shape at once. Variables entered logic here, well before they were used in algebra. Notice also the order: he says “A of all B” where we say “all B are A,” which is why his syllogisms read backward to a modern eye.

Both sides ·

Objections and replies

Objection 1 · 反駁

Deduction can never teach us anything. If the conclusion is already contained in the premises, a valid argument only tells us what we knew.

Reply · 回應

Logical containment is not psychological possession. The axioms of geometry contain the Pythagorean theorem, and no one who learns the axioms thereby knows the theorem. Deduction is informative for limited minds, and ours are limited. How an inference can be both necessary and informative is nevertheless a real puzzle, sometimes called the scandal of deduction.

Objection 2 · 反駁

The rules of logic cannot be justified without using them. Any proof that modus ponens is reliable will rely on modus ponens.

Reply · 回應

Lewis Carroll dramatized this in 1895. His Tortoise accepts the premises of a valid argument and refuses the conclusion until the rule of inference is written down as a further premise, and then asks for another, without end. The usual moral is that a rule of inference is not one more premise. It is something we do with premises, and at some point one must simply reason. Whether that amounts to a justification or to an admission that there is none is still argued.

Objection 3 · 反駁

Validity is beside the point. People are not moved by syllogisms, and the arguments that matter in life are never deductive.

Reply · 回應

The second half is nearly right: most reasoning that matters is inductive or practical. But the deductive standard still does work there. It lets us ask what would have to be added to make an argument valid, and the added premise is usually the one worth fighting about. As for persuasion, logic was never offered as a description of how people are moved. It describes what they would be right to be moved by.

Dharma and the West ·

A view from the Dharma

Buddhist philosophers had a logic of their own, hetuvidyā, the “science of reasons,” known in Chinese as 因明. Around 500 CE the logician Dignāga reduced the Nyāya’s five steps to three. Thesis: sound is impermanent. Reason: because it is produced. Example: whatever is produced is impermanent, like a pot; and nothing permanent is produced, like space.

Set beside Aristotle’s syllogism, the form is close: the example states the general rule, the reason applies it, and the thesis follows. The difference is the pot. A Buddhist inference is incomplete until the rule has been tied to a case that both parties accept, and tested against a contrasting case. Mill complained that the syllogism never tells us how its general premise is known. The Indian logicians had built an answer to that complaint into the form itself, some thirteen centuries earlier. Whether an example can really support a universal rule is, of course, the problem of induction again (Dharma and the West, D14).
