The last lesson described how a theory is tested. This one asks what happens when a whole way of doing science is replaced by another. If the experts were wrong for a thousand years, we should like to know how they came to change, and what that tells us about the experts of today.

Does Science Ever Change Its Mind?

01A loop in the sky

Watch Mars for a few months and you will see something odd. Night after night it drifts eastward against the stars. Then it slows, stops, moves backward for several weeks, stops again, and goes on as before. Every planet does this. Around 150 CE the astronomer Ptolemy of Alexandria gave an explanation that satisfied the learned world for fourteen centuries. The earth stands still at the center. Each planet rides on a small circle, the epicycle, whose center moves around a large one. When the planet is on the inner part of its small circle it appears from the earth to move backward. By choosing the sizes and speeds of the circles Ptolemy could predict where each planet would be on any night, well enough for calendars, navigation, and horoscopes.

This was good science. It was mathematical, it was tested against observation, and it was improved by generations of astronomers in Greek, Arabic, and Latin. In 1543 Nicolaus Copernicus published a book that put the sun at the center and set the earth moving. He knew what to expect. “I can easily conceive, most Holy Father,” he wrote to the pope, “that as soon as some people learn that in this book … I ascribe certain motions to the Earth, they will cry out at once that I and my theory should be rejected.” He had kept the manuscript back for decades.

02Normal science

In 1962 the historian Thomas Kuhn asked how such changes come about, and gave an answer that surprised philosophers. Most science, he said, is not a search for new theories. It is work done inside a paradigm, by which he meant a shared achievement that tells a community what the world contains, which questions are worth asking, and what a good answer looks like. Ptolemy’s astronomy was a paradigm, and Newton’s mechanics was another. Within one, scientists do what Kuhn called normal science. They solve puzzles, measuring a constant more exactly or extending the theory to a new case. They do not test the paradigm. They assume it, and when an experiment disagrees with it they suspect the experiment.

Kuhn thought this conservatism necessary. Only people who trust a framework will push it far enough to find where it breaks. Results that will not fit, which he called anomalies, pile up slowly. For a long time they are set aside. When there are too many of them, or one of them touches something central, the field enters a crisis. Rival ideas appear, and the young begin to take them seriously.

A revolution, for Kuhn, is the replacement of one paradigm by another, and it does not happen the way a theorem is proved. The two sides do not share enough to settle the matter by a single experiment. Copernicus’s system was at first no more accurate than Ptolemy’s. It still used epicycles, since Copernicus kept the old belief that heavenly motion must be circular. It also contradicted the best physics of the day, which said that a moving earth would leave falling stones and clouds behind. What it offered was a kind of order. In Ptolemy’s system every planet’s epicycle was mysteriously tied to the sun’s yearly motion. Copernicus explained this at a stroke: the yearly circle is ours. The backward loop of Mars is what we see when the faster earth overtakes it.

It took more than a century, and the work of Kepler, Galileo, and Newton, before the new system was plainly better by every measure. During that time, Kuhn argued, choosing it was a judgment that the evidence did not force. He compared the change to the drawing that can be seen as a duck or as a rabbit. The lines are the same, and what one sees in them has shifted. Scientists on either side of a revolution, he wrote, work in different worlds. The physicist Max Planck had said something harsher from his own experience: “A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.”

04The calendar case

China had its own astronomy, with careful records of eclipses, comets, and “guest stars” going back two thousand years, and its own rival pictures of the sky. In the 1600s Jesuit missionaries brought European methods to the court in Beijing and showed that they predicted eclipses more accurately. In 1644 the German Jesuit Adam Schall was put in charge of the imperial calendar. Twenty years later an official named Yang Guangxian brought charges against him and the Chinese astronomers who worked with him. Yang’s objection was not mainly about accuracy. He is remembered for the sentence: “It is better for China to have no good calendar than to have Westerners in China.” Schall was condemned, and five Chinese astronomers were executed. Yang took over the bureau, his predictions failed, and in 1669 a public contest of predictions restored the Jesuits’ methods.

The episode shows both of Kuhn’s points and one that tells against him. A way of doing astronomy was bound up with institutions, loyalties, and a view of the world, and it was defended on those grounds. Yet the two sides could agree on a test, the length of a shadow at noon on a named day, and the result decided the matter for the emperor. Paradigms may be different worlds. They can still be made to meet at particular points.

05Is it progress?

Kuhn’s book made many readers conclude that science is a succession of fashions and that no paradigm is truer than another. He denied this for the rest of his life. Later theories, he said, are better at solving puzzles than earlier ones: more accurate, wider in scope, simpler, and more fruitful of new results. These values are shared across revolutions, and they are why science does not go round in circles. What he would not say is that later theories are closer to the truth about what the world is really like, since he saw no way to compare a theory with the world except through another theory.

That last step is still argued over. Realists point out that theories which survive a revolution usually keep the successes of the old ones as special cases, as Einstein’s equations give Newton’s at low speeds, and that this looks like getting nearer to something. Their opponents reply with history: most past theories that were once successful are now thought false, so we should expect the same of ours. Both sides accept that science changes its mind. It does so rarely, slowly, and under pressure, and when it has changed it can do more than it could before.

Try it: the loop of Mars

The gray track is what Mars is seen to do from the earth over about two years, loop included. First fit it Ptolemy’s way, with the earth at rest: give Mars an epicycle and adjust its size and its speed. Then put the sun at the center and see what happens to the loop.

Nicolaus Copernicus, On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies (1543), dedication to Pope Paul III 哥白尼《天體運行論》(1543)致教宗保祿三世的獻辭 · From Prefaces and Prologues to Famous Books, ed. Charles W. Eliot (1910, public domain)

I can easily conceive, most Holy Father, that as soon as some people learn that in this book which I have written concerning the revolutions of the heavenly bodies, I ascribe certain motions to the Earth, they will cry out at once that I and my theory should be rejected. For I am not so much in love with my conclusions as not to weigh what others will think about them, and although I know that the meditations of a philosopher are far removed from the judgment of the laity, because his endeavor is to seek out the truth in all things, so far as this is permitted by God to the human reason, I still believe that one must avoid theories altogether foreign to orthodoxy.

Dedication, opening

Copernicus was a church canon, and the book was printed as he lay dying. An unsigned note added by the Lutheran editor Andreas Osiander told readers that the hypotheses need not be true, only useful for calculation. Copernicus had not approved it and almost certainly did not agree.

For it is not unknown that Lactantius, otherwise a famous writer but a poor mathematician, speaks most childishly of the shape of the Earth when he makes fun of those who said that the Earth has the form of a sphere. It should not seem strange then to zealous students, if some such people shall ridicule us also. Mathematics are written for mathematicians.

Dedication, close

Close reading · 精讀

Lactantius was a Christian writer of the fourth century who denied that the earth is round. Copernicus’s last sentence states a part of Kuhn’s account: a technical community judges by standards that outsiders do not share. It also shows what Kuhn’s account can miss, since Copernicus plainly thought he was right and not merely differently trained.

Both sides ·

Objections and replies

Objection 1 · 反駁

If science has been wrong so often, there is no reason to trust it now on vaccines or the climate.

Reply · 回應

The history supports the opposite conclusion. Science was found to be wrong by scientists, using better evidence, and the corrections were kept. No other institution has that record. Revolutions are also rare and seldom overturn what was well measured. Ptolemy’s eclipse predictions still work, and Newton’s laws still send spacecraft to Mars. What is likely to be revised is the deep picture. The practical findings on which medicine and engineering rest are much less likely to change. To distrust a result one needs a reason that bears on that result. That science has changed before is not such a reason.

Objection 2 · 反駁

Kuhn makes science a matter of crowd psychology. On his account the winners are whoever persuades the next generation.

Reply · 回應

This was the charge of Popper and Lakatos, who called Kuhn’s picture “mob psychology.” Kuhn replied that he was describing how a community of experts weighs reasons, and that the reasons are good ones: accuracy, consistency, scope, simplicity, fruitfulness. Experts can weigh these differently without being irrational, as judges can disagree about a hard case. The reply saves rationality and gives up the idea that a rule could ever replace judgment.

Objection 3 · 反駁

The word “paradigm” is so vague that the theory cannot be tested. One critic counted twenty-one senses in Kuhn’s book.

Reply · 回應

Kuhn accepted the criticism and in a postscript of 1969 separated two main senses: the whole set of beliefs and methods a community shares, and the concrete model solutions that students learn to imitate. The second is the more original idea. Scientists learn their trade from worked examples, as apprentices do, and they extend it by seeing new problems as like old ones. That part of his account has held up well, and it is why the word has passed into ordinary speech.

Dharma and the West ·

A view from the Dharma

Buddhism has had to face a change of this kind. The traditional texts describe a flat world with a great mountain, Meru, at its center, four continents around it, and the sun and moon circling its peak. For two thousand years this was the cosmos of Buddhist Asia, taught in monasteries and painted on walls. It is not the cosmos of modern astronomy. Buddhists have met the difficulty in several ways, and the plainest was stated by the Dalai Lama: if scientific analysis were conclusively to show that certain claims in Buddhism are false, then Buddhists must accept the findings of science and abandon those claims. He has applied this to Mount Meru.

The early discourses give a reason why this can be done without loss. A monk once told the Buddha that he would leave the order unless he was told whether the cosmos is eternal or not, finite or infinite. The Buddha replied with the simile of a man struck by a poisoned arrow who refuses to have it removed until he knows who shot it, of what clan, with what kind of bow. He would die first. “I have not declared” these things, the Buddha said, and what he had declared was suffering, its origin, its ending, and the path. The cosmology in the texts was the common knowledge of ancient India, used as a setting. It was never the teaching. In Kuhn’s terms the Buddha asked his followers to keep the puzzle and hold the paradigm loosely, which is what a tradition must do if it is to outlive the science of its time (Dharma and Western Philosophy D18).
