Theon’s daughter
Hypatia was born in Alexandria in the second half of the fourth century. The exact year is not known. Her father Theon was the last recorded member of the Museum, the city’s old institute of learning, and is remembered for the edition of Euclid’s Elements from which nearly all later copies descend. He taught his daughter mathematics and astronomy, and ancient writers agree that she surpassed him. She never married.
The mathematics of her time was the work of preserving and explaining. The great discoveries of Euclid, Apollonius, and Ptolemy were five to seven hundred years old, and they survived because teachers like Theon and Hypatia corrected the texts, wrote commentaries, and taught them to students. She wrote on Diophantus’s Arithmetic and on Apollonius’s study of conic sections. Neither commentary survives under her name. The heading of her father’s commentary on Book III of Ptolemy’s Almagest says that the text was revised “by my daughter Hypatia, the philosopher,” and many scholars think that the version of that book we read is hers.
The teacher 老師
By about 390 she was the head of a school of her own. She taught the philosophy of Plato as interpreted by Plotinus, in which the study of mathematics and the heavens is a training of the soul for the knowledge of higher things. The church historian Socrates, a Christian writing about twenty-five years after her death, says that she “made such attainments in literature and science, as to far surpass all the philosophers of her own time,” and that students came to her from a distance. She spoke in public before the magistrates, and “all men on account of her extraordinary dignity and virtue admired her the more.”
We know her teaching best from the letters of one student, Synesius of Cyrene, who later became a bishop and went on writing to her as “mother, sister, teacher.” He asks her advice on his books and on a hydrometer he wants made, and tells her that he has designed an astrolabe with her help. Her students included Christians and pagans, and several rose to high office. In a city where the two faiths fought in the streets, her lecture room was one of the few places where they sat together.
March 415 415
In 412 Cyril became bishop of Alexandria and set about enlarging the power of his office. He was opposed by Orestes, the imperial governor, who was himself a Christian. Their quarrel turned violent. Monks loyal to the bishop attacked the governor in the street, and one of them was tortured to death on the governor’s order. Hypatia was known to be among the governor’s advisers. A rumor spread among Cyril’s supporters, Socrates says, “that it was she who prevented Orestes from being reconciled to the bishop.”
In March 415, during Lent, a crowd led by a church reader named Peter stopped her carriage as she was returning home. They dragged her to a church, stripped her, and killed her with roof tiles or shards. They tore her body apart and burned the pieces. Socrates, who had no love of pagans, wrote that the act “brought not the least opprobrium” on Cyril and on the whole church of Alexandria, and that “nothing can be farther from the spirit of Christianity.” No one was punished. Orestes disappears from the record soon afterward, and Cyril went on to become one of the most powerful churchmen of the century and, later, a saint.

The central idea ·
Mathematics as a way upward
No philosophical work by Hypatia survives, and what she taught has to be gathered from her school and her students. She was a Platonist of the school of Plotinus. In that tradition the world we see is the lowest level of a reality that descends from a single source, the One, through intellect and soul. The aim of philosophy is to turn the soul back toward its source, and the turn begins with mathematics. Numbers and figures are grasped by the mind and not by the senses. They do not change, and they are the same for everyone. A student who learns to love them has taken a first step away from appetite and opinion.
Astronomy came next, as the place where mathematics meets the visible world. To calculate an eclipse is to find order behind appearances, and for a Platonist that was a religious exercise as well as a scientific one. This explains what can look like a puzzle in her career, that a philosopher spent her days correcting tables and building instruments. It also explains why Christians could study with her. Her philosophy asked for discipline of mind and conduct and for a reverence toward the source of things. It did not ask them to sacrifice to the old gods. Synesius kept a good deal of what she taught him when he became a bishop.
There was a woman at Alexandria named Hypatia, daughter of the philosopher Theon, who made such attainments in literature and science, as to far surpass all the philosophers of her own time.
None of her own sentences has come down to us. This is the opening of the earliest account, by a Christian historian of the next generation.
The strongest objection ·
A commentator, and no more?
Hypatia is often described as a great scientist whose death ended ancient learning. The evidence does not support so large a claim. No discovery is credited to her by any ancient source. She did not invent the astrolabe or the hydrometer, both of which were older. Her works were commentaries and editions, the ordinary scholarly labor of her age. Alexandrian mathematics and philosophy went on after her for two more centuries. If the measure of a thinker is new results, she has none that we can point to.
The objection applies the wrong measure. In a period when books were copied by hand and schools were closing, a science survived only if someone kept the texts correct and trained people to read them. The Almagest that reached the astronomers of Baghdad, and through them Copernicus, had passed through the hands of Theon and probably of Hypatia. In Kuhn’s terms she was a master of normal science, and normal science is what carries a tradition across the centuries until someone is in a position to overturn it. Her contemporaries, who knew what she had and had not done, called her the best philosopher of the age.
How we know · 史料
Every age its own Hypatia
We have three early sources. Socrates the church historian respects her and blames the mob. The pagan philosopher Damascius, writing a century later, uses her death against the Christians and makes Cyril directly responsible. The Coptic bishop John of Nikiu, writing in the seventh century, calls her a witch who beguiled the city with astrolabes and instruments of music, and reports her killing with approval. Each is telling the story for a purpose.
Later ages did the same. In the eighteenth century Voltaire and others made her a martyr of reason murdered by priests. A Victorian novel made her a beautiful young woman and the last of the Greeks, though she was probably about sixty. The twentieth century made her a symbol of women in science. A recent film connects her death with the burning of the Library of Alexandria, which had ceased to exist long before she was born, and shows her discovering that the planets move in ellipses, for which there is no evidence at all. What the sources support is plainer. A learned woman who advised the governor was killed by partisans of the bishop in a struggle over who should rule the city. Her science and her religion were not the cause. Her death is best understood as a political killing.
Dharma and the West ·
Hypatia and the Buddha
The Platonism that Hypatia taught has more in common with Buddhist practice than its vocabulary suggests. Both treat philosophy as a training and not only as a set of doctrines. Both begin with conduct and restraint of the senses, go on to the steadying of attention, and aim at an insight that changes the person. The one story that preserves her words shows her using a method the Buddhist texts know well. To a student infatuated with her body she pointed out what a body is, in order to turn his mind toward something that does not decay. The contemplation of the body’s unattractive aspects serves the same purpose in the monastic training.
The destination differs. For the Platonist the soul rises toward an eternal and unchanging reality, and mathematics is prized because its objects never change. The Buddha taught that nothing whatever is permanent, the knower included, and that release comes from seeing this. There is also a difference in how each tradition met the kind of violence that killed her. Her school had no answer to a mob. The Buddha’s community met hostile kings and rival sects many times, and its rule was to give no pretext: to stay out of the quarrels of the powerful, to accept support from every side, and to leave a place where the teaching could not be heard. It is a hard rule, and Hypatia, who chose to advise a governor, lived by a different one. One may admire her choice and still see what it cost (Dharma and Western Philosophy D18).
