Vienna and Melbourne
Singer’s parents were Jews from Vienna who left for Australia in 1938, after the German annexation of Austria. Three of his grandparents did not get out. His father’s parents were deported to Łódź and were not heard of again. His mother’s father, David Oppenheim, a teacher of classics who had worked with both Freud and Adler, died in the camp at Theresienstadt. Singer was born in Melbourne in 1946 and grew up in a prosperous household without religion. Many years later he wrote a book about the grandfather he never met.
He studied law, history, and philosophy at the University of Melbourne and went to Oxford in 1969. His teacher there was R. M. Hare, who held that moral judgments must be universal: if I say that an act is right for me, I must accept that it is right for anyone in the same position, including when I am on the receiving end. Singer took from Hare the habit of asking, of any moral view, whether its holder would accept it from the other side.
The spaghetti
In 1970 he had lunch at Balliol College with a Canadian graduate student, Richard Keshen, who asked whether the sauce on the spaghetti contained meat and, on hearing that it did, took a salad. Singer asked why. He said later that he had never met a vegetarian who gave an answer he could understand and relate to. Within a few weeks he and his wife Renata had stopped eating meat. In 1973 he reviewed a collection of essays on animals for The New York Review of Books under the title “Animal Liberation,” and in 1975 he published the book of that name.
The book made no appeal to a love of animals, and Singer said that he had no particular fondness for them. It offered an argument and a great deal of evidence about laboratories and factory farms, and it ended with recipes. It has been continuously in print and has been translated into dozens of languages. Many of the people who founded animal organizations in the following decades have said that reading it was what set them going. Singer has said that its effects were smaller than he had hoped, since far more animals are farmed industrially now than in 1975.
The public philosopher
He returned to Australia in 1977 and taught at Monash University for two decades, where he founded a center for bioethics. His textbook Practical Ethics applied the same reasoning to abortion, euthanasia, and the treatment of newborn infants with severe conditions. These chapters made him more enemies than the ones on animals. In Germany and Austria in 1989 and after, his lectures were canceled or shouted down by protesters who heard in them an echo of the Nazi killing of the disabled. He replied that his family’s history gave him every reason to take that charge seriously, and that he was arguing for the choices of parents and patients. He rejected any policy of the state. When Princeton appointed him to a chair in 1999, disability groups blocked the entrance to the building.
The other half of his public work began with an article written in 1971, during a famine in East Bengal, which argued that people in rich countries are doing wrong when they spend on luxuries money that could save lives. The lesson on strangers set out the argument. Forty years later it became the basis of a movement called effective altruism, which tries to find out where a donation does the most good. Singer has given a substantial part of his income away for most of his life. He gave his last lecture at Princeton in 2023.

The central idea ·
An interest is an interest
Singer’s philosophy starts from one principle and applies it without exceptions. In moral deliberation, he writes, we must give equal weight “to the like interests of all those affected by our actions,” because “an interest is an interest, whoever’s interest it may be.” The principle does not say that all beings are equal in ability or should be treated alike. It says that when two beings have a similar interest, such as the interest in not being in pain, the fact that one of them is closer to me, looks like me, or belongs to my nation or species does not make its interest count for more.
He calls the history of ethics an expanding circle. People began by counting the interests of the family and the tribe, and were brought by argument and experience to include other tribes, other races, and women on equal terms. Each expansion looked absurd to those who resisted it. Singer’s two main campaigns push the circle outward in two directions: across species, to every being that can suffer, and across distance, to the poor of other countries. In both the method is the one he learned from Hare. Find the principle that a person already accepts in a nearby case, and ask what reason there is for stopping there.
The essence of the principle of equal consideration of interests is that we give equal weight in our moral deliberations to the like interests of all those affected by our actions.
The word to notice is “like.” The principle compares similar interests and says nothing about treating different beings in the same way.
The strongest objection ·
Who decides which lives go well?
The objection that has cost Singer most comes from people with disabilities. In Practical Ethics he argued that a newborn infant is not yet a person in the sense of a being aware of itself over time, and that parents of an infant with a very severe condition should be permitted, with their doctors, to end its life. The lawyer and activist Harriet McBryde Johnson, who had a muscle-wasting disease from birth and used a wheelchair, debated him at Princeton in 2002. She wrote afterward that his argument rests on a judgment that lives like hers are worse than other lives, and that the judgment is made by people who have not lived them. Those who do live them report otherwise. A theory that counts well-being must get the facts about well-being from somewhere, and she charged that it had taken them from prejudice.
Singer has answered that he does not deny the worth of the lives of disabled adults, and that he was writing about decisions that are already made quietly in hospitals when treatment is withheld. He has revised some of what he wrote about particular conditions as the evidence changed. The deeper objection stands as a question for any utilitarian. If the sums depend on someone’s estimate of how good a life is, then the theory is only as fair as the estimator. Johnson also reported that he had been unfailingly courteous to her, and that this had made the debate harder for her and no easier.
How we know · 史料
His mother
In the 1990s Singer’s mother developed Alzheimer’s disease and in time no longer recognized her children. By the standard of his own writings she had ceased to be a person in the full sense, and the money spent on her care could have done more good elsewhere. Singer and his sister paid for nurses to look after her at home until she died. Journalists put the inconsistency to him. He said that the experience had made him see that these issues are “really very difficult,” that the decision was shared with his sister, and that it is different when it is your own mother.
His critics took this as a refutation: the philosopher could not live by his philosophy. Another reading is available, and it is the one the lesson on strangers reached. A theory of what is best from the point of view of the universe, as Singer likes to say, does not have to be the rule by which each of us lives every hour. Bernard Williams had said of impartial theories that they ask a person to have one thought too many. What Singer did for his mother is what Confucius and Mencius would have expected of him, and what almost every reader would have done. The question it leaves is whether the theory should be adjusted to make room for it, or whether it shows only that we are all, as he has said of himself, less good than we could be.
Dharma and the West ·
Singer and the Buddha
Singer is an atheist with no religious practice, and he has long acknowledged that Buddhism reached his main conclusion about animals some twenty-four centuries before he did. The first precept covers all sentient beings, on the ground that all fear pain and death as we do. His test for moral standing, sentience, is very nearly the Buddhist category of sentient beings. The practice of extending goodwill outward from oneself to friends, strangers, enemies, and at last all beings is an expanding circle in the form of a meditation.
The fullest meeting took place in Taiwan. Beginning in 2016 Singer held a series of conversations with the Venerable Shih Chao-Hwei, a bhikkhunī, scholar of Buddhist ethics, and campaigner for animals and for the equality of nuns, and they were published in 2023 as The Buddhist and the Ethicist. They agree on a great deal, including that compassion must be effective and not only felt. The differences are instructive. Singer reasons from a sum of well-being, and will accept a harm when the total comes out better. The Buddhist asks first about the intention of the one who acts and what the act does to that mind, so that some acts are refused whatever the sum. On killing, on the embryo, and on the weight of karma they did not reach agreement, and neither pretended to.
The Buddhist and the Ethicist。
