A11 · Reality 真實
Do We Have Free Will?
If every event follows from earlier events by fixed laws, your choices were settled before you were born. Three ways of living with that thought, and a fourth that says it does not matter.
The dispute about free will is largely a dispute about what freedom is. If it means being uncaused, we probably lack it. If it means acting from our own reasons without constraint, we often have it, whatever physics says.

Do We Have Free Will?
This morning you chose what to eat. It felt as though the choice was yours, and as though you could have taken the other thing. Almost everything we care about in human life rests on that feeling. We praise people and blame them, make promises and hold grudges, deliberate and regret, all on the assumption that what a person does is up to that person. The difficulty is that we also believe every event has a cause. Your choice was an event in your brain. It had causes, which had causes of their own, and the chain runs back to a time before you existed. If so, in what sense was the choice up to you?
02The demon
The clearest statement of the worry was written in 1814 by the French mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace. “We ought then to regard the present state of the universe as the effect of its anterior state and as the cause of the one which is to follow.” Imagine an intelligence that knew, at one instant, all the forces of nature and the position of every particle, and that was vast enough to calculate with them. “For it, nothing would be uncertain and the future, as the past, would be present to its eyes.” This is determinism: given the state of the world at one time and the laws of nature, only one future is possible. Laplace’s intelligence, which later writers called his demon, would know what you will have for breakfast on a morning ten years from now.
03Spinoza: the stone that thinks it flies
A century and a half earlier, Baruch Spinoza had drawn the conclusion without flinching. “Nothing in the universe is contingent,” he wrote. Everything that happens follows from the nature of things with the same necessity by which the angles of a triangle add up to two right angles. People believe otherwise for a reason he states exactly: “men are mistaken in thinking themselves free; their opinion is made up of consciousness of their own actions, and ignorance of the causes by which they are conditioned.” We notice our desires and do not notice where they come from. “Thus an infant believes that of its own free will it desires milk, an angry child believes that it freely desires vengeance, a timid child believes that it freely desires to run away.” In a letter he imagined a stone that became conscious while flying through the air. It would suppose, he said, that it was moving because it wished to.
04The consequence 後果
Suppose determinism is true. Then, the argument runs, nobody could ever have done anything other than what he did. The thief could not have refrained and the hero could not have run away. It seems unfair to blame a person for what he could not help, and pointless to praise him. Philosophers who accept this reasoning are called hard determinists. They conclude that moral responsibility, in the sense of deserving reward or punishment, is an illusion, and that we should treat wrongdoers as we treat the sick or the dangerous, with treatment and restraint and without resentment. Spinoza recommended exactly that attitude: not to laugh at human actions, or weep at them, or hate them, but to understand them.
05Two ways to keep freedom
One reply accepts that determinism and freedom cannot both be true, and concludes that determinism is false. Those who take this line are called libertarians, in a sense that has nothing to do with politics. They hold that when I choose, I start a new chain of causes that was not fixed by anything earlier. The ancient atomist Epicurus thought that atoms occasionally swerve for no reason, and some modern writers appeal to the indeterminacy of quantum physics. The standing objection is that chance is no better than necessity. If my arm moves because of a random event in a neuron, the movement is a twitch, and a twitch is not a choice.
The other reply is that the conflict was never real. This is compatibilism, and its classic statement is Hume’s: “By liberty, then, we can only mean a power of acting or not acting, according to the determinations of the will; that is, if we choose to remain at rest, we may; if we choose to move, we also may.” Freedom, on this view, is the absence of constraint. A prisoner in chains is unfree. So is a person at gunpoint, or in the grip of a compulsion he would give anything to be rid of. A person who does what he wants, for his own reasons, is free, and it makes no difference that his wants have causes. Indeed they had better have causes, since an action that sprang from nothing in my character would hardly be mine. The contemporary philosopher Harry Frankfurt refined the idea. What matters is whether the desire I act on is one that I want to have, as the addict’s craving is not.
06What is decreed and what is up to me 命,與求在我者
Chinese philosophers argued about ming (命), which means both “fate” and “what is decreed.” The Mohists attacked fatalism as a doctrine that ruins people. If the rich are fated to be rich and the poor to be poor, then, as the fatalists say, effort is useless, and a ruler who believes it will stop governing and a farmer will stop plowing. Mozi called this teaching a great harm to the world. Mencius drew a finer line. Some things, he said, are such that “if you seek them you get them, and if you neglect them you lose them,” because the seeking is within yourself. Others depend on what is outside, and there, seeking is no help to getting. Virtue is of the first kind and wealth and long life are of the second. This is not a theory of causation. It is closer to the compatibilist’s point, that the question of what is in my power can be answered by looking at what responds to my effort, without first settling the metaphysics.
07The brain gets there first 大腦先到一步
In 1983 the physiologist Benjamin Libet asked volunteers to flex a wrist whenever they felt like it and to note the moment at which they became aware of the urge. Electrodes on the scalp showed a build-up of activity in the brain about half a second before the movement, and about a third of a second before the reported decision. Many people took this as proof that the conscious will arrives too late to cause anything. The interpretation is disputed. The actions were trivial and unreasoned, the timing of an inner event is hard to report, and later work suggests that the early signal may reflect background fluctuation and not a decision already made. A compatibilist adds that the result would not matter in any case. A decision made by my brain is a decision made by me.
08What would change
Suppose you became convinced that there is no free will. What would you do differently? You would still have to decide what to eat. You could not sit back and wait to see what you were determined to do, since sitting back would be one of the options. P. F. Strawson argued in 1962 that our practices of gratitude, resentment, and forgiveness do not rest on a theory that might be refuted. They are part of what it is to live with other people, and no argument could lead us to give them up wholesale. What can change is their tone. A person who sees how much of anyone’s character was shaped by things he did not choose may judge others more gently and take less credit for himself. On that modest conclusion Spinoza, Hume, Mencius, and the Buddha are closer together than their theories would lead one to expect.

Where do you stand?
You are with Spinoza. The cost is desert: no one ever truly deserves praise or blame, including the people you love and the people who have wronged you. Ask whether you can actually take up that attitude toward someone who has betrayed you, and whether you would want to.
You hold that your choices are not fixed by the past. Then something in you must act without being caused to, and you owe an account of what that is. If it is chance, the choice is not yours. If it is your character and reasons, those have a history. The demand is for a cause that is yours and has no causes itself.
This is the majority view among philosophers today. The difficulty is the manipulation case. Suppose a neuroscientist had secretly installed all your desires and reasons. You would still act from them without constraint, and few would call you free. You must say how being shaped by genes and upbringing differs from that.
This is the position of Galen Strawson. To be truly responsible for what you do, you would have to be responsible for the way you are, and for that you would have had to make yourself, which nothing can do. The view is hard to refute. Its defenders tend to live exactly like everyone else, and they regard that as a fact about human psychology that leaves the argument untouched.

In their own words
The first passage states determinism as a physicist sees it. The second explains why, if it is true, we do not feel it.
Laplace, A Philosophical Essay on Probabilities (1814); Spinoza, Ethics (1677) 拉普拉斯《機率的哲學論文》;史賓諾莎《倫理學》 · Laplace translated by F. W. Truscott and F. L. Emory; Spinoza translated by R. H. M. Elwes (both public domain)
Given for one instant an intelligence which could comprehend all the forces by which nature is animated and the respective situation of the beings who compose it—an intelligence sufficiently vast to submit these data to analysis—it would embrace in the same formula the movements of the greatest bodies of the universe and those of the lightest atom; for it, nothing would be uncertain and the future, as the past, would be present to its eyes.
Two things are worth noticing. The passage comes from a book about probability, and Laplace’s purpose is to explain why we need probabilities at all: because we are not that intelligence. The demon is a way of saying that chance is a measure of our ignorance. And the sentence is conditional. He does not claim that such a mind exists. He claims that the future is fixed whether or not anyone can read it. (“Analysis” here means mathematical calculation.)
Thus an infant believes that of its own free will it desires milk, an angry child believes that it freely desires vengeance, a timid child believes that it freely desires to run away; further, a drunken man believes that he utters from the free decision of his mind words which, when he is sober, he would willingly have withheld.
The examples are chosen with care. In each we, the onlookers, can see the cause plainly, and the person cannot. Spinoza’s suggestion is that the sober adult stands to his own choices as the drunkard stands to his words. The feeling of freedom is real, and it is evidence only that we are aware of wanting and unaware of why. A scholium is a note attached to a formal proof, and Spinoza often put his most vivid writing there.
Both sides ·
Objections and replies
I know that I am free, because I experience it every time I choose. No argument can be more certain than that experience.
Samuel Johnson put it in one line: “Sir, we know our will is free, and there’s an end on’t.” Spinoza’s answer is the drunkard. What we experience is the wanting and the doing. We do not experience the absence of causes, since an absence is not the kind of thing that can be felt. The experience is the same whether determinism is true or false, and so it cannot decide between them.
Quantum physics has shown that the world is not deterministic. The problem has been dissolved by science.
Whether quantum theory is indeterministic depends on how it is interpreted, and physicists disagree. Suppose it is. The uncertainty of a single atom is mostly swamped at the scale of neurons, and where it is not, it gives us randomness. A decision that came from the unpredictable decay of a particle would be no more mine than one that came from the laws of Newton. Indeterminism removes one threat and does nothing to supply control.
If people come to believe there is no free will, they will behave worse. So the doctrine is dangerous, whatever its truth.
The Mohists said this of fatalism, and some experiments have suggested that people cheat more after reading arguments against free will, though the findings have not held up well. Two replies are available. Determinism is not fatalism: it says that your efforts are among the causes of what happens, so effort makes all the difference. And the consequences of believing a thing are not evidence for or against it. If the truth is uncomfortable, the remedy is to understand it properly.

Dharma and the West ·
A view from the Dharma
The Buddha lived among teachers who held nearly every position in this debate, and he rejected the extremes on practical grounds. One discourse lists three views that, when pressed, lead to inaction: that everything a person experiences is caused by past deeds, that everything is caused by the creative act of a supreme god, and that everything happens without cause or condition (Aṅguttara Nikāya 3.61). If any of them were true, he says, there would be no reason to make an effort to do this and avoid that. The first of the three is notable, because it is a view about karma. The Buddha denies that the present is wholly fixed by past action.
What he affirms looks like compatibilism reached by another road. Actions arise from conditions, including intention, and intention is itself conditioned. Nothing stands outside the causal order, and there is no self behind the will to do the choosing. Yet when a brahmin tells him that there is no such thing as acting on one’s own initiative, the Buddha asks how a man who has just walked up to him of his own accord can say so. “Is there an element of initiative?” There is. And since there is, beings who initiate actions are found (Aṅguttara Nikāya 6.38). Karma on this account is a condition that can be worked with. The whole path assumes that understanding the causes of one’s states changes what those causes produce, and Spinoza built the last part of his Ethics on the same assumption. On the Buddhist view, freedom has to be gained by training. One comes to be less driven by craving and aversion as one sees more clearly how they arise (Dharma and the West, D17).
