We live as though only the present exists and as though it moves. Each belief is very hard to defend. The alternative, that all times are equally real, fits the physics and leaves the experience of passage unexplained.

What Is Time?

01I know, until you ask

Around the year 400 Augustine of Hippo, writing the story of his life as a long prayer, stopped to ask a question that seemed to have nothing to do with it. “What then is time? If no one asks me, I know: if I wish to explain it to one that asketh, I know not.” The remark is often quoted as a joke about philosophy. He meant it as a statement of the problem. We handle time without difficulty. We say that a speech was long, that a friend is late, that an hour has passed. Yet when we try to say what it is that passes, or where the long time is that we measured, the confidence disappears.

02The vanishing present

His argument is short. The past no longer exists, and the future does not yet exist. Only the present is. But how long is the present? This century is not all present, since most of its years are gone or still to come. The same is true of this year, this day, this hour. Take a single minute: part has already fled and part has not arrived. “If an instant of time be conceived, which cannot be divided into the smallest particles of moments, that alone is it, which may be called present. Which yet flies with such speed from future to past, as not to be lengthened out with the least stay.” He concludes: “The present hath no space.” So the past and future are nothing, and the present is a boundary with no extent. What, then, are we measuring when we say that a time was long?

03Time in the mind

Augustine’s answer is that we measure something in ourselves. It is not strictly correct, he says, to speak of past, present, and future. One should speak of “a present of things past, a present of things present, and a present of things future,” and these exist in the soul: “present of things past, memory; present of things present, sight; present of things future, expectation.” When I recite a psalm that I know by heart, my expectation reaches forward over the whole of it before I begin. As I go on, what was expected passes through my attention and becomes memory, until expectation is used up and all of it is memory. The long time I measure is a long memory or a long expectation. “It is in thee, my mind, that I measure times.” He called time a stretching of the mind.

04A thing, or a relation?

Most philosophers have been unwilling to put time inside the mind, since the world surely had a history before there were minds. But they have disagreed about what sort of thing it is outside. Aristotle tied time to change. “Time is just this—number of motion in respect of ‘before’ and ‘after.’” Where nothing whatever changes, no time passes. Newton needed something firmer for his physics, and declared that “absolute, true, and mathematical time, of itself, and from its own nature flows equably without regard to anything external.” Time, for him, is like an empty container that would go on even if the universe were frozen. His rival Leibniz replied that this is a fiction. Time is the order in which events succeed one another, and to speak of time with no events in it is like speaking of a family tree with no people.

05Does time flow?

In 1908 the Cambridge philosopher J. M. E. McTaggart drew a distinction that has organized the debate ever since. Events can be ordered in two ways. In the first, each event is past, present, or future, and its position is always changing: the death of Socrates was once in the far future, became present, and has been sinking deeper into the past ever since. In the second, events are simply earlier or later than one another, and these relations never change. The death of Socrates is earlier than the birth of Augustine, and it always was and always will be.

The question is which ordering describes reality. On one view, often called presentism, only what is present exists, and the moving “now” is the most basic fact about the world. This agrees with experience and with Augustine’s premise. On the other view, called eternalism, all events are equally real, laid out along the dimension of time as places are laid out in space. “Now” is like “here,” a word that picks out wherever the speaker happens to be. Nothing moves. The first view has to explain what the present moves through and how fast, and the only available answer seems to be one second per second, which says nothing. The second has to explain why it feels so strongly as though time passes.

06What physics did to “now” 物理學對「現在」做了什麼

Einstein’s theory of relativity, published in 1905, gave the eternalists their strongest argument. It showed that two observers moving relative to each other will disagree about which distant events are happening at the same moment, and that neither is wrong. There is no single “now” that spans the universe. If so, there can be no fact about which events, everywhere, are the present ones, and presentism appears to lose its subject. Late in life Einstein wrote to the family of a friend who had just died that for physicists “the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.”

Physics also deepens a second puzzle. Its basic laws work equally well in either direction of time, and yet eggs break and do not unbreak, and we remember yesterday and not tomorrow. The standard explanation appeals to entropy: the universe began in an extremely orderly state and has been growing more disordered ever since, and the direction of increasing disorder is what we call the future. Why the universe began that way is not known.

07The timely sage

Classical Chinese thought was little troubled by Augustine’s question and deeply interested in another. The word for the cosmos, 宇宙, is itself a theory of space and time. An early definition runs: “What has gone and what is to come, from of old until now, is called zhou (宙); the four directions with above and below are called yu (宇).” Time and space are named together as the two aspects of everything there is. Within that frame the pressing question was a practical one, what the moment calls for. The word 時 means “time,” “season,” and “timeliness,” and Mencius’s highest praise of Confucius was that he was “the sage who was timely” (聖之時者): he took office when it was right to take office and withdrew when it was right to withdraw. The Greek tradition treated time mainly as something to be measured or explained. Here it is something to be answered, as a farmer answers the seasons.

08Why it matters

The metaphysics of time seems remote from life, and it bears on how we live more directly than most of philosophy does. If only the present exists, then the dead are simply nothing, and so is everything you have done. If all times exist, then every moment of your life is permanently part of what there is, and its being over means only that it lies in an earlier part of the whole. People have found comfort in the second picture and some have been horrified by it. Augustine found his own answer by looking inward. He concluded that we are stretched across time, pulled between what we remember and what we expect, and that this stretching is what a human life is. With that conclusion the third unit ends. We have asked what a thing is, whether change is real, whether we are free, and what time is. In each case the plain facts, that ships are repaired, rivers flow, people choose, and the clock moves, turned out to be much less clear than they seemed.

    In his own words

Book XI is a commentary on the first words of Genesis, “In the beginning.” Augustine wants to know what it means for God to have made time, and the inquiry turns into the first sustained philosophy of time in the West. Pusey’s Victorian English keeps “thee” and “hath.”

What then is time? If no one asks me, I know: if I wish to explain it to one that asketh, I know not: yet I say boldly that I know, that if nothing passed away, time past were not; and if nothing were coming, a time to come were not; and if nothing were, time present were not.

    Confessions XI.14

The famous confession of ignorance is only the first half of the sentence. Read the second half. He does know something, and says so “boldly”: time depends on things passing away, coming, and being. That is Aristotle’s position, that there is no time without change, and it is the first premise of McTaggart’s argument. The humility is real, and it is also a method. He separates the little that he can assert from the much that he cannot. (“Were not” is the old form of “would not be.”)

(were not 是 would not be 的古體。)

…yet perchance it might be properly said, “there be three times; a present of things past, a present of things present, and a present of things future.” For these three do exist in some sort, in the soul, but otherwhere do I not see them; present of things past, memory; present of things present, sight; present of things future, expectation.

    Confessions XI.20

    Close reading · 精讀

Look at the qualifications: “perchance,” “in some sort,” “otherwhere do I not see them.” He is reporting where he can find past and future, and he does not claim that they exist nowhere else. The move is to turn a question about the world into a question about experience, and it was made again fifteen centuries later by Husserl, who analyzed the experience of hearing a melody in almost the same three terms. (“Perchance” means “perhaps,” and “otherwhere” means “elsewhere.”)

Augustine makes time depend on the mind. But the dinosaurs lived and died over a hundred million years with no one to remember or expect anything.

    Reply · 回應

The objection is sound against the claim that there was no time before minds, and he does not make that claim. He holds that time began with the created world. What he places in the mind is our measuring of time and the three tenses. A modern eternalist can agree with him exactly: the order of earlier and later is in the world, and pastness, presentness, and futurity come from the standpoint of an experiencer.

    Objection 2 · 反駁

Physics has settled the matter. Relativity shows that there is no universal present, so the flow of time is an illusion and philosophers have nothing to add.

    Reply · 回應

Relativity rules out a universal present defined by physics. It does not rule out a privileged present that physics cannot detect, though few find that attractive. More to the point, calling the flow an illusion does not explain it. An illusion is an experience, and an experience of passage seems itself to be something that passes. Explaining how a world without passage produces minds for which there is passage is unfinished work in physics and philosophy alike.

    Objection 3 · 反駁

The question is empty. Time is what clocks measure, and nothing more needs to be said.

    Reply · 回應

This is a good definition for doing physics, and it leaves the philosophical question where it was. A clock is a process that repeats, and to call it a good clock is to say that its repetitions take equal times, which uses the idea we were trying to define. The definition also says nothing about the difference between past and future, since a clock runs equally well in a film played backward.

Dharma and the West ·

A view from the Dharma

The debate between presentism and eternalism was conducted in India, in detail, some two thousand years before McTaggart. One early school took its very name from its answer. The Sarvāstivādins, “those who say that all exists,” held that past, present, and future things are all real (三世實有), and that a thing’s being present consists only in its exercising its activity. Their reason was a familiar one: if the past did not exist, past deeds could not bear fruit, and a memory would have nothing to be a memory of. Their opponents, the Sautrāntikas, replied that only the present moment exists, that the past is what has ceased and the future is what has not arisen, and that causal influence is passed along from moment to moment like a flame from lamp to lamp. The arguments on each side match the modern ones closely.

Nāgārjuna rejected both. If present and future exist in dependence on the past, he argued, they would have to be in the past already; and if they do not depend on it, they cannot be established at all The three times are defined by one another and none stands by itself, which is what he means by calling time empty. The practical teaching goes with this. A well-known verse says: “Let one not trace back the past, nor yearn for the future. What is past is left behind, and the future has not been reached” (Majjhima Nikāya 131). Augustine found that the mind is stretched painfully between memory and expectation, and he looked to eternity for rest. The Buddha, starting from the same observation, taught his followers to see each present state clearly as it arises, without being carried away by the other two (Dharma and the West, D16).
