Arthur Schopenhauer
Schopenhauer held that the inner nature of everything, ourselves included, is a blind striving that he called will, and that to be a creature of will is to suffer. Wanting is lack, and lack is pain. When a want is met, the relief is brief. “No attained object of desire can give lasting satisfaction, but merely a fleeting gratification; it is like the alms thrown to the beggar, that keeps him alive to-day that his misery may be prolonged till the morrow.” When no want presses, boredom arrives, so that life “swings like a pendulum backwards and forwards between pain and ennui.” No Western philosopher has described the second noble truth so exactly, and he reached it before he had read much about Buddhism. He was glad to find the agreement afterward. The difference lies in what the will is. For Schopenhauer it is the thing in itself, the one reality behind appearances, and no one can be rid of what he is. Release comes only to rare saints who deny the will to live. He admired them and did not claim to be one.
