Pluck a string in the middle or near the end and watch it shake in many ways at once. Then mix the harmonics yourself and hear how the same note changes its color.
在弦的中間或靠近一端撥一下,看它同時用很多種方式振動。再自己混合諧波,聽同一個音怎麼換了顏色。
A note is not one shake but a mix of many shakes at once: the fundamental and its harmonics. The pitch you hear comes from the fundamental. Which harmonics are strong, and how the note begins and fades, give it its tone color.
一個音不是只有一種振動,而是很多種振動同時混在一起:基音和它的諧波。你聽到的音高來自基音;哪些諧波強、這個音怎麼開始又怎麼消失,決定了它的音色。

The string is C4, 261.63 Hz. Click the box to pluck the string at that spot, or use the slider. Above the string, each thin line is one way of shaking: harmonic 1 is the whole string, harmonic 2 is two halves, harmonic 3 is three thirds, and so on. The gold string at the bottom is all of them added together, and that is the sound. White dots mark the nodes, the points that stay still. The shaking is slowed down on purpose.
這根弦是 C4,261.63 赫。點箱子,就在那裡撥弦;也可以用滑桿。弦的上方,每一條細線是一種振動方式:第 1 諧波是整根弦、第 2 諧波是兩個半根、第 3 諧波是三個三分之一,依此類推。最下面金色的弦是全部加起來的樣子,也就是你聽到的聲音。白點標出節點,就是不動的點。振動畫面是刻意放慢的。

The model string is about 60 cm long. The fundamental shakes once per second here, slowed down about 262 times, and harmonic n shakes n times per second.
模型裡的弦約 60 公分長。基音在這裡每秒振動一次,放慢了大約 262 倍;第 n 諧波每秒 n 次。

Reading · 英文閱讀
Play middle C on a piano, and then play the same note on a violin. The pitch is the same. The loudness can be the same too. Yet you would never mix them up, even with your eyes closed. Something about the sound is different. Musicians call it tone color, or timbre (say "TAM-ber").
A well-known standard from the American National Standards Institute describes timbre as the quality that lets a listener tell that two sounds are different, even when they have the same loudness and the same pitch. So timbre is not pitch, and it is not loudness. It is the third thing.
To see where timbre comes from, look inside one note. A string does not shake in only one way. It shakes as a whole, and at the same time in two halves, in three thirds, and so on. Each way of shaking is called a harmonic. The whole-string shake is the fundamental, or the first harmonic. The second harmonic has exactly twice the frequency, and the third has three times, and so on. The second harmonic is also called the first overtone.
You do not hear these harmonics as separate notes. You hear one note, and its pitch is the fundamental. But the mix matters. If the harmonics are strong, the sound is bright and buzzy. If only a few are present, the sound is round and soft. The mix of harmonics changes the shape of the sound wave, even though the repeating rate, and so the pitch, stays the same.
Where does the mix come from? Partly from how you start the string. Helmholtz, a German scientist who wrote a famous book on sound in 1863, noticed that a string struck in its middle loses its second partial tone. In the model you can check this: pluck exactly in the middle and every even harmonic disappears, because a node sits right where you pluck. Pluck near the end and many high harmonics are strong. Partly it comes from the instrument itself. A clarinet, for example, mostly makes the odd harmonics.
Time matters too. A piano string is struck by a hammer, so the note starts at once and then fades. A bowed violin string can start more gently and keep going. Reference works on timbre note that if you remove the beginning of a piano or trumpet note, it becomes harder to tell which instrument it is. Our model uses only simple recipes, so it cannot sound like a real piano or violin. Real instruments have many more harmonics and many more details.

A note also has a shape in time. Attack is how fast it starts, decay is how fast it fades, and sustain is how much is kept. Compare a struck or plucked note, which starts at once and fades, with a bowed note, which starts gently and keeps going. The harmonics are exactly the same in both.
一個音在時間上也有形狀:起音是它多快響起來、衰減是它多快變小聲、維持是它保留多少。比較敲擊或撥奏的音(一開始就響、然後慢慢消失)和拉奏的音(輕輕開始、一直持續)。兩個的諧波完全一樣。

Stories Behind Tone Color · 音色背後的故事

關於人怎麼一步步看懂聲音的「顏色」的四個小故事。
A Scientist · 一位科學家
The German scientist Hermann von Helmholtz published a book on the sensations of tone in 1863. In it he studied the partial tones of strings, tubes, and voices. He noted that when a string is struck in its middle, the second partial tone disappears. The English translation by Alexander Ellis appeared in 1875.
德國科學家亥姆霍茲(Hermann von Helmholtz)在 1863 年出版了一本談聽覺與音的名著,書裡研究了弦、管和人聲的分音。他指出,弦在正中間被敲時,第二個分音就消失了。亞歷山大・艾利斯(Alexander Ellis)的英文譯本在 1875 年出版。
A Tube · 一根管子
A clarinet is a tube that is almost closed at one end by the reed. Such a tube mostly reinforces the odd harmonics, so a clarinet makes mainly the odd members of the series. The even ones are weak, not completely missing. Helmholtz found the same by ear, up to the seventh partial, and found that instruments with conical tubes, such as the oboe, reinforce all of them.
單簧管是一根一端幾乎被簧片封住的管子。這樣的管子主要加強奇數諧波,所以單簧管主要發出奇數的那幾個;偶數的很弱,但不是完全沒有。亥姆霍茲用耳朵也發現了同樣的事,一直到第七個分音;他還發現雙簧管這類圓錐形管的樂器,會把所有的諧波都加強。
A Hammer and a Bow · 一把槌子和一張弓
A piano string is struck by a felt-covered hammer, so the sound begins at once and fades. A bow does something different: the string clings to the bow, is carried along, and then suddenly slips back. This stick-and-slip motion can keep the string going. A piano string is also a little stiff, so its higher partials come out slightly above exact whole-number multiples.
鋼琴的弦是被包著毛氈的琴槌敲響的,所以聲音一開始就出現,然後慢慢消失。弓的做法不一樣:弦黏在弓上被帶著走,然後突然滑回來。這種「黏住、滑開」的運動可以讓弦一直振動下去。鋼琴的弦還有一點硬,所以它的高分音會比剛好的整數倍稍微高一點。
A Word · 一個詞
Helmholtz called it Klangfarbe, German for “tone color,” and English adopted both “tone color” and “timbre.” In Chinese, the dictionary of the Ministry of Education also lists 音品 and 音質 for the same idea. Chinese players use words for it too. The erhu, for example, is described as having a beautiful timbre that ranges from soft to strong.
亥姆霍茲把它叫做 Klangfarbe,德文就是「聲音的顏色」;英文後來用 tone color 和 timbre 兩個詞。在中文裡,教育部辭典把同一個概念也寫作「音品」「音質」。演奏者也用詞彙來形容它,例如二胡被形容為音色優美、表現力強,剛柔多變。

Myth vs. Fact · 常見迷思
✗ Myth · 迷思Two instruments that play the same note make exactly the same sound wave.兩種樂器彈同一個音,發出的聲波一模一樣。
✓ Fact · 事實They share the same repeating rate, so the same pitch. But the mix of harmonics and the way the note starts and fades are different, so the wave shapes differ.它們重複的快慢一樣,所以音高一樣;可是諧波的混合、以及音怎麼開始和消失都不同,所以波形不一樣。
✗ Myth · 迷思You can hear the harmonics as separate notes.你可以把諧波一個一個聽成分開的音。
✓ Fact · 事實Normally you hear one note, and its pitch is the fundamental. The harmonics change the color of that note. It takes practice, or special tools, to pick them out.平常你只聽到一個音,音高就是基音;諧波改變的是這個音的顏色。要把它們一個個挑出來,需要練習或特別的工具。
✗ Myth · 迷思A violin's sound is a sawtooth wave.小提琴的聲音就是鋸齒波。
✓ Fact · 事實A bow drives the string with a motion that looks like a sawtooth, and synthesizers use sawtooth waves as one ingredient for bowed sounds. But the sound of a real violin is far more complicated than any simple recipe.弓帶動弦的運動看起來像鋸齒,合成器也拿鋸齒波當做拉弦聲音的材料之一;但真的小提琴的聲音,比任何簡單的配方都複雜得多。
✗ Myth · 迷思The beginning of a note does not matter for telling instruments apart.要分辨樂器,一個音開頭那一瞬間不重要。
✓ Fact · 事實It matters a lot. If you remove the attack from a piano or trumpet note, it becomes harder to identify, because the hammer strike or the first blast of breath is very characteristic.非常重要。如果把鋼琴或小號的音一開始的那一瞬間拿掉,就比較難辨認,因為槌子敲弦的聲音或第一口氣的聲音,都是那種樂器很有特色的部分。
