Press one key in slow motion and watch the lever, the jack, the hammer, the damper, and the string. See why the hammer has to let go, and what the pedal does.
A piano key does not pluck the string. A chain of levers throws a felt hammer at the string and lets it go, so the string can ring freely until the key comes up and the damper falls back.

This is one key of a grand piano, simplified. Press and hold the key, either on the model or with the button. The key lifts the jack, the jack throws the hammer, and just before the string the jack slips away and lets the hammer go. The hammer hits the string, bounces back, and is caught. The damper lifts off the string as soon as the key goes down, and falls back when you let go. Try the damper pedal: it holds all the dampers up, so the sound keeps ringing. Slow motion is on, because a real strike takes only a few thousandths of a second.

Reading ·
A piano is a keyboard instrument that makes sound when its keys are pressed, which activates an action where hammers strike strings. A modern piano usually has 88 keys: 52 white and 36 black, from A0 to C8. In the Hornbostel–Sachs system it is a chordophone, because strings are what vibrate, and it is played by striking. The name piano is short for pianoforte, from an Italian phrase for a harpsichord with soft and loud.
That name matters. On a harpsichord a note sounds equally loud no matter how hard you press the key. The piano changed that. The harder you press, the faster the hammer moves and the louder the sound. From pianissimo to fortissimo, the hammer speed changes by almost a factor of a hundred. The harder blow is also brighter: the contact between the hammer and the string is shorter, and a shorter contact puts more high partials into the sound.
Between your finger and the string is the action, a mechanical assembly that turns the pressing of a key into the rapid motion of a hammer. It amplifies a small movement of the key into a longer, faster movement of the hammer. In a grand piano the rising key lifts a part called the wippen, the wippen carries a jack, and the jack pushes the hammer up toward the string. At the same time, the key lifts the damper, a felt block that normally rests on the string and keeps it still.
Here is the clever part. The hammer must strike the string but not stay on it, because continued contact would damp the sound. So just before the hammer reaches the string, the jack is tripped and slips away. This is called let-off, and it frees the hammer. The hammer flies on by its own momentum, strikes, and rebounds, and a back check catches it. The contact lasts only about 4 thousandths of a second at pianissimo, and under 2 at fortissimo.
A piano has one string for each note in the bass, two for each note in the tenor, and three for each note in the treble. They are steel wire, and the bass strings are wound with copper. A string alone is not loud, because a thin string moves little air. Its vibrations go through a bridge to a large soundboard that moves a lot of air. When you let go of the key, the damper falls back on the string, and the sound stops. The strings of a modern grand pull with a total of more than 20 tons.
The pedals change what the dampers and hammers do. The right pedal, the damper pedal, lifts all the dampers, so notes keep ringing after you release the keys. It does not make notes louder, even though it is sometimes called the loud pedal. On a grand piano the left pedal shifts the whole action so the hammers hit two of the three strings, and that changes the timbre as well as the loudness. And the strings are a little stiff, so their overtones are slightly sharp. That is why tuners tune octaves slightly wider than 2 to 1.

A stiff string has overtones that are a little sharp. Move the slider to make the string stiffer, and see how much sharper each overtone gets. Then listen to the low note with an exact 2 to 1 octave above it, and with an octave tuned to the string’s own second partial. The numbers for B here are only for demonstration: the real value depends on the length, diameter, tension, and material of the string.

A Name · 名字
Piano is short for pianoforte, from an Italian phrase meaning a harpsichord with soft and loud. A 1700 inventory of the Medici family lists an instrument of new invention that produces soft and loud, built by their instrument maker Bartolomeo Cristofori. Dates differ in other sources: Taiwan’s dictionary says about 1709. The three Cristofori pianos that survive today date from the 1720s.
The Second Keyboard ·
The piano was not the first keyboard that could change its sound with touch. The clavichord could, so Wikipedia calls the piano the second keyboard instrument that allows gradations of volume and tone. The harpsichord could not: a note sounds equally loud no matter how hard the key is pressed. The piano’s name says what it added: soft and loud.
Iron and Felt ·
The fortepiano changed by adding a cast iron frame, which allowed much greater string tensions. The first full iron frame for grand pianos was patented in 1843. Felt for the hammers was first used in pianos by Jean-Henri Pape in 1826. Felt has to be soft enough, because a hard hammer would create loud, very high harmonics. Today the strings of a modern grand pull with a total tension of more than 20 tons.
A Wider Octave ·
Pianos are usually tuned to a modified version of equal temperament. Because the overtones of a stiff string run progressively sharp, octaves are tuned slightly wider than the exact 2 to 1. How much they are stretched varies from piano to piano, and a longer piano with longer strings has lower inharmonicity. The inharmonicity is not just a fault: it is important for tones to sound piano-like.
