A Chinese orchestra sorts its instruments by how they are played: blown, bowed, plucked, or struck. Each way sets something different vibrating, and the sounds you hear come from that.

From left to right: an erhu, a pipa, a dizi, and a drum. Click one to hear it and see what vibrates. On the erhu, the bow sits between the two strings and rubs them. On the pipa, a finger plucks a string, and it rings and fades. In the dizi, the small dots are air moving inside the bamboo tube. Below the blow hole is a membrane hole, which is covered with a thin membrane. On the drum, a stick strikes the skin. The shapes are simplified, and the sounds are our own simple recipes, not recordings.

Reading ·
A Chinese orchestra, called a guoyuetuan in Taiwan, was developed in the twentieth century. It is based on the structure and principles of a Western symphony orchestra, but it uses Chinese instruments. It grew out of the Jiangnan sizhu ensembles in the 1920s. Its instruments are grouped by the way they are played: blown, bowed, plucked, and struck. In Chinese these are 吹, 拉, 彈, and 打.
The erhu is a Chinese two-stringed bowed instrument. One end of its small sound box is covered with python skin, and the bow hair passes between the two strings instead of over them. There is no fingerboard, so the player presses the strings with the fingertips in the air. The two strings are commonly tuned a fifth apart. The erhu is not a violin, even though people sometimes call it the Chinese violin.
The pipa is a plucked instrument with a pear-shaped body and four strings. Taiwan’s dictionary says a pear-shaped, four-stringed pipa came to the Central Plains in the fourth century from the western regions. The pipa has been played in China for almost two thousand years. In the Chinese word, “pí” is to strike outward with the right hand, and “pá” is to pluck inward.
The dizi is a transverse bamboo flute. A bangdi has one blow hole, one membrane hole, and six finger holes. The membrane hole is between the blow hole and the finger holes. It is covered with a thin membrane, the dimo, which makes the sound louder and brighter, with a buzzing quality. The bangdi is shorter and higher, with a clear, bright tone. The qudi is longer and mellower, and about a fourth lower.
A drum, a gu, is a skin stretched over a hollow wooden body, played with the hands, sticks, or mallets. A gong, a luo, is a flat bronze disc struck with a mallet. In Chinese opera, the percussion section is particularly important, and a pair of gongs is an essential part of the orchestra. The overtones of a drumhead and of a gong are not whole-number multiples, as you saw in lesson 9.
A lot of Chinese music is built on five notes, called gong, shang, jue, zhi, and yu. Any of the five can be the tonic. The guqin was said to have had five strings for these five notes, and the guzheng is traditionally arranged in a pentatonic scale. But this is a tendency and not a rule: some pieces use seven notes. In Taiwan, two old traditions are nanguan, with a pipa held across the lap, and beiguan, with suona, drums, and gongs.

Press the five notes in order: gong, shang, jue, zhi, yu. Then a sixth key gives the high gong. Switch the instrument, and play the short tune that we wrote with only these notes. The names Do, Re, Mi, Sol, and La are only a rough match, because any of the five can be the tonic.

A Modern Orchestra ·
The Chinese orchestra is a twentieth-century development. In 1921 Zheng Jinwen founded the Great Unity Music Society in Shanghai and grew the ensemble to 35 players. The Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra, founded in Nanjing in 1935, is considered the first Chinese orchestra, and it moved to Taiwan in 1949. The Taipei Chinese Orchestra was founded in 1979, and the National Chinese Orchestra began in 1984 as an experimental orchestra at a school, and has had its present name since 2012.
A Membrane ·
Most flutes have no membrane at all. The dizi has a special hole, the mo kong, covered by a thin shaving of reed or bamboo called the dimo. Taiwan’s dictionary says it enlarges the volume and makes the tone clear and bright. English-language sources add that the sound gets a buzzing, nasal quality. So a dizi is an air column instrument with a vibrating membrane in it.
A Lute on the Lap ·
Taiwan’s dictionary describes nanguan as ancient music that has been popular in Fujian, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia since the Song and Yuan dynasties. The singer holds clappers, and the accompaniment is led by the pipa, with the dongxiao vertical flute, the sanxian, the erxian, and clappers. The pipa is held horizontally across the lap. Nanguan came to Taiwan with immigrants from Fujian, and it became popular in places such as Lukang. UNESCO listed it in 2009.
A Street Band ·
Beiguan is a traditional music that was widespread in Taiwan. It usually uses two suona, a woodblock, large and small gongs, drums, cymbals, and also a pipa. Most of the lively street bands that join temple festivals are beiguan bands, and there are the most clubs in Changhua and Yilan. The name beiguan, “northern,” is relative to nanguan from southern Fujian. It was probably brought to Taiwan in the years of the Qianlong and Jiaqing emperors, though where it came from in Fujian is not certain.
