一個鍵一個鍵建出大調、小調和五聲音階,聽同一段旋律換三種音階。看看什麼是全音和半音。
A scale is a ladder of notes from low to high. The steps between the notes are whole steps and half steps, and the pattern of those steps decides which scale it is.
音階是一座由低到高的音的階梯。音和音之間的步階是全音和半音,這些步階的排列圖樣,決定它是哪一種音階。
Try It · 動手試試
Choose a tonic, the note you start on, and a kind of scale. Then press the keys one at a time, following the pattern of whole steps (W) and half steps (H). If you press the wrong key, the page tells you which step comes next. When the scale is built, you can see it on the staff and play it. The tonics here are all white keys, so some scales need black keys: they are shown with a sharp (♯) or a flat (♭).
選一個主音(你開始的那個音)和一種音階,然後依照全音(W)與半音(H)的圖樣,一次按一個鍵。按錯了,頁面會告訴你下一步是什麼。音階建好了,可以在五線譜上看,也可以播放。這裡的主音都是白鍵,所以有些音階需要黑鍵:它們會用升記號(♯)或降記號(♭)標出來。
Reading · 英文閱讀
A scale is a series of notes arranged from low to high, from one note up to the same note an octave higher. The first note is called the tonic. The English word scale comes from the Latin scala, which means ladder, and that is a good picture: every note is a rung, and you climb from the tonic to the top.
The distance between neighboring rungs comes in two sizes. A half step, also called a semitone, is the distance between two neighboring keys on a piano. A whole step is two half steps. In the equal temperament you met in lesson 1, each half step is a frequency ratio of 2 to the power of 1/12, so two half steps multiply the frequency by about 1.12. On the piano, E to F and B to C are half steps, because there is no black key between them.
A major scale has a pattern of seven steps: whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half. That is W W H W W W H. Start on C and you only need white keys: C D E F G A B C. The two half steps fall between the third and fourth notes, and between the seventh and eighth. In equal temperament, the notes of a major scale are 0, 200, 400, 500, 700, 900, 1100, and 1200 cents above the tonic.
The pattern is what makes the scale, not the starting note. Start on D and keep W W H W W W H, and you must use F♯ and C♯. A sharp raises a note by a half step. A flat lowers it. A natural minor scale has a different pattern: W H W W H W W. Compared with a major scale from the same tonic, its third, sixth, and seventh notes are a half step lower. From A, it uses only white keys: A B C D E F G A.
Many people hear major scales as brighter and minor scales as more serious or sad. Taiwan’s dictionary says a major key usually sounds brighter than a minor one. But research suggests this link is at least partly learned, and it also depends on tempo and context. So try it yourself: play the same tune in both, and describe what you hear in your own words.
Not every scale has seven notes. A pentatonic scale has five notes in an octave. The major pentatonic scale uses the first, second, third, fifth, and sixth notes of a major scale: C D E G A. The five black keys on a piano also make a pentatonic scale. Pentatonic scales are found in many cultures. In Chinese music, the five notes are named gong, shang, jue, zhi, and yu, and each of them can be the tonic of its own mode.

A Ladder · 一座階梯
According to Wikipedia, the English word scale comes from the Latin scala, which literally means ladder. Taiwan’s dictionary calls 音階 a translation of the English word scale. Each note is a rung, and the steps between the rungs are not always the same size.
依維基百科,英文 scale 來自拉丁文 scala,字面意思是「梯子」。台灣的辭典說「音階」是英文 scale 的意譯。每個音是一格橫木,而橫木之間的距離並不總是一樣大。
Five Tones · 五音
Taiwan’s dictionary lists the five tones of ancient Chinese music as 宮, 商, 角, 徵, and 羽, and cites the Zuo Zhuan and the Rites of Zhou. A reference entry adds that each of the five tones can serve as the tonic, which gives five different pentatonic modes. They are often matched with Do Re Mi Sol La, but only roughly, because any of the five can be the tonic.
台灣的辭典把中國古代音樂的五音列為宮、商、角、徵、羽,並引用《左傳》和《周禮》。一則辭書條目補充:這五個音每一個都可以當主音,所以有五種不同的五聲調式。它們常被對應到 Do Re Mi Sol La,但只是大致對應,因為五個音都可以當主音。
A Cut Pipe · 一根被截短的管
Ancient Chinese texts, including the Guanzi and the Lüshi Chunqiu, describe making notes by cutting a length into three parts and either removing one part or adding one. Start with 81. Remove a third and you get 54. Add a third to that and you get 72. Taiwan’s reference entry says this works out the same, mathematically, as the method of Pythagoras in ancient Greece. Removing a third leaves 2/3 of the length, the same 2 : 3 you saw in lesson 1.
中國古代文獻,包括《管子》和《呂氏春秋》,記載把一段長度分成三份,再減去一份或加上一份來生出音。從 81 開始,減去三分之一得到 54;再加上它的三分之一得到 72。台灣的辭書條目說,這在數理上和古希臘畢達哥拉斯的方法相通。減去三分之一,剩下 2/3 的長度,就是第一課看過的 2 比 3。
Five Notes Worldwide · 世界各地的五個音
Wikipedia says pentatonic scales were developed independently by many ancient civilizations. It names the hymn “Amazing Grace” and the Scottish tune of “Auld Lang Syne” as pentatonic melodies. The Chinese folk song “Mo Li Hua” (Jasmine Flower) uses a five-note scale that is common in Chinese music. Try playing them on the black keys.
維基百科說,許多古老的文明各自發展出五聲音階。它舉出聖詩〈Amazing Grace〉和蘇格蘭曲調〈Auld Lang Syne〉是五聲音階的旋律;中國民歌〈茉莉花〉用的是中國音樂裡很常見的五個音的音階。你可以試著用黑鍵彈彈看。
