Your two kidneys clean all of your blood about 30 times a day. Follow the water through real 3D kidneys, zoom into one tiny filter, and check whether you are drinking enough today.
Your kidneys are filters. They clean your blood again and again, keep the water and salt your body needs, and send the rest to your bladder as urine.

These are real kidneys, in their real place beside your backbone. Blood flows in, clean blood flows out, and drops of urine run down two thin tubes to the bladder. Slide how much water you drank and watch the urine change. Zoom into a nephron to see the three steps: filter, take back, flush. When the bladder is full, send your model to the restroom!

The bones, kidneys, ureters, and bladder are real shapes from BodyParts3D, in their real places; the blood vessels and the nephron are our own drawing. A real nephron is far too thin to see, and each kidney has about a million of them. Time is sped up: one second here is 20 minutes. The amounts are for a child of about 30 kilograms; an adult's kidneys filter about 140 liters of blood a day.

Reading ·
Take a sip of water. In a few minutes it will be in your blood, and within an hour or two, some of it will be on its way out again. Your body is about 60 percent water, and it has to keep that amount just right. The organs in charge are your two kidneys. They are shaped like beans, each about the size of your fist, and they sit on either side of your backbone, just under your lowest ribs. The right one sits a little lower, because your liver is above it.
Your kidneys are filters for your blood. As your cells work, they make waste, and the blood carries it away. About a fifth of the blood your heart pumps goes straight to the kidneys. In an adult, they filter about half a cup of blood every minute. That adds up to about 140 liters a day, which means all of your blood gets cleaned about 30 times every day.
The cleaning is done by tiny filters called nephrons, and each kidney has about a million of them. A nephron works in three steps. First, it filters: water, salt, sugar, and waste are pushed out of the blood, while blood cells are too big to get through. Second, it takes back: almost all of the water, and all of the sugar your body needs, return to the blood. Third, it flushes: the waste and the extra water that are left become urine.
From 140 liters of filtered blood, only 1 to 2 liters become urine. Urine drips down two thin tubes called ureters into the bladder, a stretchy bag that slowly fills like a balloon. When it is about half full, nerves tell your brain that it is time to find a restroom. Urine is yellow because of a pigment left over when old red blood cells are broken down.
Your kidneys also decide how much water to keep. If you drink a lot, they let more water go, and your urine is pale. If you have not had enough, they hold water back, and your urine turns dark yellow. So the color is a message from your kidneys: pale yellow means you are doing fine, and dark yellow means it is time to drink. You lose water in your sweat and your breath too, so you need more on hot days and when you exercise.
Kidneys work quietly, and people often do not notice a problem until it is serious. Taiwan has one of the highest rates of kidney failure in the world, often after years of diabetes or high blood pressure. You can look after your kidneys now. Drink water instead of sugary drinks: Taiwan's health agency says elementary students need at least 1,500 milliliters a day. Do not eat too much salt, and go to the restroom when you need to. Now count your cups with the water tracker below the model.

Myth vs. Fact ·
Everyone needs exactly eight glasses of water a day.
It depends on your size, the weather, and how active you are. A rule many people use is 30 milliliters for each kilogram of body weight.
The more water you drink, the better.
Your kidneys can only handle so much at a time, and gulping down a huge amount very fast can make you sick. Small sips through the day work best.
You only need to drink when you feel thirsty.
By the time you feel thirsty, you are already a little short of water, and children at play often do not notice. Drink at every break.
You need two kidneys to stay alive.
One healthy kidney can do the whole job. That is why a living person can give a kidney to someone whose kidneys have failed.

Your weight in kilograms times 30 gives a daily water goal in milliliters: 30 kilograms means 900, but schoolchildren need at least 1,500.
Your right kidney is a little lower than your left, because the liver takes up the space above it.
In Chinese ·
In everyday Chinese and Taiwanese, a kidney is often called 腰子 (yāozi), “the waist one,” because the kidneys sit at the waist. That is also why a cashew is a 腰果 (yāoguǒ), “waist nut”: it is curved just like a kidney. English noticed the same shape in a different food: the kidney bean. And when a Taiwanese family asks 你今天喝水了沒?, “Have you had water today?”, they are looking after two small organs most people never think about.
Classroom Activity 1 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: the paper filter is like the first step of a nephron: big things, like blood cells, stay behind, and small things go through. But a kidney is much smarter than paper. In the second step, it takes back the water and sugar it wants and leaves the waste, something no simple filter can do.
Classroom Activity 2 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: this is good practice with multiplication and units. Most students are surprised by how little they drink at school. Agree on a class habit, such as a sip at every bell, and let students go to the restroom when they ask.
This lesson is for learning about the body. It is not medical advice. If it hurts when you go to the restroom, if your urine looks red or brown, or if you are very thirsty all the time, tell an adult. Take medicine only when a doctor or a parent says so, because some medicines are hard on the kidneys.
