Your body has three walls against germs, and it remembers every enemy it has beaten. Watch white blood cells chase bacteria through a tiny cut, and see why the second fight is so much faster.
Your body fights germs with three walls: skin and mucus keep most germs out, white blood cells attack the ones that get in, and your body remembers each germ so it can win faster next time. That memory is how vaccines work.

A paper cut on your fingertip, blown up 2,000 times. Slide the time forward: bacteria slip in and double, the area turns red and swollen, white blood cells squeeze out of a blood vessel to eat them, and Y-shaped antibodies finally tag every last one. Then switch to the second time the same germ shows up, and compare the two fights on the chart.

Handwashing timer ·
Scrub everywhere: palms, backs, between fingers, fingertips, thumbs, and wrists. Singing “Happy Birthday” twice takes about 20 seconds.
The hand bones are real, from the same BodyParts3D skeleton as Lesson 1; the cut, the cells, and the germs are our own drawing, shown about 2,000 times bigger than life. The bacteria are drawn a little bigger than they really are so you can see them. Real cuts hold far more germs and cells, and the timeline is squeezed: hours at the start, days at the end. The two fights follow the typical pattern of a first and a second immune response.

Reading ·
Germs are tiny living things, such as bacteria and viruses, that are too small to see. Most bacteria are harmless, and many, like the ones in your gut, even help you. But some can make you sick. Your body is attacked by germs every day, and it wins almost every time, usually without you noticing. It does this with three walls of defense.
The first wall keeps germs out. Your skin is a tough, dry barrier that most germs cannot get through. Your nose, mouth, and throat are lined with sticky mucus that traps germs, and tiny hairs sweep the mucus away so you can swallow or sneeze it out. Tears and saliva contain substances that kill bacteria, and your stomach is filled with strong acid. Germs get in mainly through cuts, or through your eyes, nose, and mouth, often from your own hands.
If germs get past the first wall, the second wall attacks right away. Bacteria can double every 20 minutes, so speed matters. Damaged cells send out alarm signals, and blood vessels nearby widen and leak fluid. That is why a cut turns red, warm, swollen, and sore. Then white blood cells squeeze out of the blood vessels and hunt the germs, swallowing them whole. A single drop of blood carries hundreds of thousands of white blood cells. A fever can help too, because many germs grow more slowly when your body is warmer.
The third wall is the smartest. Special white blood cells study the invader and make antibodies, Y-shaped proteins that fit only that one germ, like a key fits a lock. Antibodies stick to the germs, making them easier to catch and destroy. The first time your body meets a new germ, making the right antibodies can take a week or more, so you may feel sick for days.
But your body remembers. After the fight, memory cells stay on guard for years. If the same germ comes back, they make antibodies in a day or two, and the germ is often gone before you feel sick at all. Vaccines use this memory. A vaccine shows your body a harmless piece or a weakened form of a germ, so your body learns to recognize it without having to get sick first.
You can help your three walls. Wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating and after using the toilet. Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow. Clean cuts and keep them covered. Sleep well and eat well, because a tired body fights germs less well. And remember that antibiotics kill bacteria but do nothing against viruses like colds and flu. Now try the germ calculator and the handwashing timer below the model.

Sticky mucus traps germs, tears and saliva fight bacteria, and stomach acid destroys most germs you swallow.
Red, warm, swollen, and sore: blood vessels open up so white blood cells can rush in.

Myth vs. Fact ·
All bacteria are bad for you.
Most bacteria are harmless, and trillions of helpful bacteria live in your gut, where they help digest food and crowd out harmful germs.
Colds are caused by viruses, and antibiotics work only on bacteria. Taking them when they are not needed helps bacteria learn to resist them.
A fever is always bad and should be stopped.
A fever is often part of how your body fights germs. A doctor or a parent decides when medicine is needed, especially if the fever is very high or lasts a long time.
If you can't see dirt, your hands are clean.
Germs are far too small to see. Clean-looking hands can still carry them, so wash before you eat and after using the toilet.

In Chinese ·
The Chinese word for immunity, 免疫 (miǎnyì), means “escaping the plague”: 免 is to avoid, and 疫 is an epidemic. English immunity comes from the Latin immunis, “free from a duty,” so an immune person was free from the sickness. The old saying 病從口入 (bìng cóng kǒu rù), “sickness comes in through the mouth,” is why Taiwanese students learn to wash their hands before every meal, and why the five steps 濕、搓、沖、捧、擦 are posted next to so many sinks.
Classroom Activity 1 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: soap breaks the surface tension of the water, so the pepper rushes away. In real handwashing, soap also breaks up oils on your skin and lifts germs off so the water can rinse them away. That is why rinsing with water alone is not enough.
Classroom Activity 2 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: germs travel the same way, and the last student in line still gets some. Ask how many students touched their face without noticing. Washable materials only, and keep glitter away from eyes.
