The Human Body · Lesson 19 ·
A scab, a bruise, a broken arm in a cast: your body is repairing itself. Watch a real 3D bone knit back together beside a healing cut, and keep a diary of a bruise or a fingernail.
Your body repairs itself in the same order every time: stop the leak, clean up, build a quick patch, then slowly rebuild it properly.

On the right is a real forearm with a break in one bone. On the left is a small block of skin with a cut. Press play, or drag the slider through the four steps. The bone and the skin follow the same plan, but on very different clocks: the cut needs days, and the bone needs months. Watch the two clocks in the panel, and switch the cast on and off.

The forearm bones are real shapes from BodyParts3D; the break, the clot, the lump of new bone, the cast, and the block of skin are our own drawing. A real break is jagged, and the skin block is greatly magnified. The times are typical ones for a simple break in a forearm and for a small clean cut. Real healing times depend on the injury, the bone, and the person, and children's bones usually heal faster than adults' bones.

Reading ·
Think about the last time you scraped your knee. It bled, it stung, and a week later the scab fell off and showed new pink skin. Nobody had to tell your knee what to do. A broken toy stays broken, but your body repairs itself, and it follows the same plan every time. The plan has four steps.
Step one: stop the leak. When you are cut, blood vessels are cut too. Within minutes, tiny blood cells called platelets stick to the edges and to one another. Then a net of sticky threads forms and glues everything into a clot. On your skin, the top of the clot dries out and becomes a scab. A scab is your body's own bandage, so try not to pick it.
Step two: clean up. White blood cells, which you met in the lesson about germs, arrive within an hour. They swallow germs, dirt, and dead cells. More blood flows to the area to bring them, and that is why the skin around a cut is red, warm, and a little swollen for a few days. It does not feel good, but it is a sign that the cleanup crew is working.
Step three: build a quick patch. Under the scab, new blood vessels grow, and soft pink tissue fills the gap. Skin cells creep across from the edges until they meet. This patch is made fast, and it is not very strong. Step four: rebuild it properly. For months, even a year or more, your body replaces the patch with stronger fibers. A deep cut leaves a scar, and a scar never gets quite as strong as the skin was before.
Bones follow the same four steps on a slower clock. When a bone breaks, blood pools around the break and forms a clot within a few hours. White blood cells clean up for about a week. Then the body builds a patch: first a soft bridge, like rubber, and then a hard lump of new bone around the break. That takes some weeks, and it is why you wear a cast. The cast does not heal the bone. It only holds the pieces still while the bone heals itself. Finally, over months and years, bone cells trim the lump away until the bone has its old shape again. Young bones do all of this faster than old ones.
A bruise is a repair you can watch in color. A bump breaks tiny blood vessels under the skin, and blood leaks out, but the skin is not broken. At first the bruise is red, blue, or purple. As your body breaks the old blood down and carries it away, the bruise turns green and then yellow or brown. In about two weeks it is gone. You cannot make these steps go faster, but you can help: wash a cut with clean water, keep it covered, eat and sleep well, and let the scab do its job. Now start a healing diary with the tool below the model.

The Repair Crew ·
Think of a road crew after a storm: first they close the road, then they clear the mess, then they lay a quick patch so traffic can pass, and months later they come back and pave it properly.
Tiny pieces of cells that stick together at a wound within minutes.

A net of sticky threads traps blood cells. When the top dries, it is a scab: your own bandage.
They swallow germs, dirt, and dead cells. The redness and swelling are signs of their work.
They weave fibers in skin and lay down new bone in a break. Fast first, strong later.
They nibble away the extra bone, a little at a time, for months or years.

Myth vs. Fact ·
A cast heals a broken bone.
The bone heals itself. The cast only keeps the pieces still and lined up while it does.
Picking off a scab helps a cut heal faster.
The scab protects the new skin growing under it. Pick it off, and the body has to start that part again.
Redness and swelling around a new cut mean something has gone wrong.
For the first few days, a little redness and swelling is the cleanup crew at work. Tell an adult if it gets worse instead of better.
Fingernails keep growing after a person dies.
They do not. The skin dries and pulls back, so the nails only look longer.

The patch is quick and weak. The rebuilding is slow and strong.

In Chinese ·
A Chinese saying goes 傷筋動骨一百天 (shāng jīn dòng gǔ yì bǎi tiān): “hurt a tendon or a bone, and it takes a hundred days.” That is about three months. Long before X-rays, people had noticed how slow bone is: the patching stage alone takes weeks, and the rebuilding takes far longer. In Taiwanese, a bruise is 烏青 (o͘-chheⁿ), “black and green,” which names two of its colors. English says “black and blue.” Both languages noticed that a bruise is a little rainbow of repair.

Teaching tip: a banana peel cannot heal, so this is not a model of healing. It is a model of why the edges of a wound are brought together and covered: the open cut dries out, browns, and gapes. Be clear with students about what the model shows and what it does not.
Classroom Activity 2 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: knees, elbows, and hands usually win, which leads naturally to helmets, knee pads, and looking where you are going. Sharing is optional: some children have injuries they do not want to talk about, so let students place stickers without explaining them.
This lesson is for learning about the body. It is not medical advice. Tell an adult about any cut that is deep, will not stop bleeding, or gets more red, swollen, or painful after a couple of days. If you think a bone may be broken, keep it still and see a doctor. Never test how a wound heals on purpose.
