Why Are Your Hands So Clever?

Each hand has 27 bones, but the muscles that bend your fingers are up in your forearm. Pull the “strings” of a real 3D hand, make a fist and a pinch, and test what your thumb can do.

Big idea ·

Your fingers have no muscles of their own. Muscles in your forearm pull on long tendons, like strings on a puppet, and your thumb can touch every other finger.

Pull the Strings

This is a real right hand and forearm, held up with the palm toward you. The orange strings are tendons. Each one runs from a muscle in the forearm, through the wrist, and out to a fingertip. Tap a finger to pull its tendon and watch only that finger curl. Then try the hand shapes: a fist, a pinch, a point, and a thumbs-up. Turn the hand over to see the tendons on the back, the ones that open your hand again.

The bones are real shapes from BodyParts3D; the tendons and muscles are our own drawing, and there are far fewer of them than in a real arm. A real forearm has about twenty muscles, and most fingers have two bending tendons, not one. The small muscles inside the palm are shown only at the base of the thumb. Real finger joints do not bend around one simple line, so the fist here is a little stiffer than yours.

Unit 18: Why Are Your Hands So Clever?

Wiggle your fingers and watch the back of your hand. Do you see thin cords moving under the skin? Now hold your forearm with your other hand and wiggle again. You can feel muscles working near your elbow, far away from your fingers. Your hand is one of the cleverest tools in nature, and it works a little like a puppet.

Start with the bones. One hand has 27 of them: 8 small bones in the wrist, 5 in the palm, and 14 in the fingers. Each finger has three bones, but the thumb has only two. With so many bones and joints, your hand can wrap around a ball, fit into a glove, or flatten out to clap.

Now the surprise. There are no muscles in your fingers. The muscles that bend and straighten them are in your forearm, and they are joined to your finger bones by long, strong cords called tendons. When a forearm muscle gets shorter, it pulls its tendon, and the tendon pulls the finger, like the string of a puppet. That is why your fingers can be thin and quick: the heavy engines are kept somewhere else. The palm does have some small muscles of its own, for spreading the fingers and for moving the thumb.

The thumb is the star. At its base is a joint shaped like a saddle, which lets the thumb swing across the palm. It can touch the tip of every other finger. This is called an opposable thumb. Try it now: thumb to index finger, middle finger, ring finger, and little finger. Without that move, you could not hold a pencil, turn a key, or button a shirt.

Your hand has two main ways to hold things. In a power grip, all the fingers wrap around something and squeeze, as when you hold a bat or carry a bucket. In a precision grip, the thumb presses against the fingertips, as when you pick up a coin or thread a needle. Your hand switches between the two without your having to think about it.

A hand is not only for holding. Your fingertips have more nerve endings packed into them than almost any other part of your body, so they can feel a single hair or read the dots of braille. Most people use one hand more than the other: about nine people in ten are right-handed. Left-handed or right-handed, your hands learn from practice. Now tape down your thumb and try the thumb challenge below the model.

In Chinese ·

Ten Fingers, One Heart

Chinese says 十指連心 (shí zhǐ lián xīn), “the ten fingers are joined to the heart”: hurt one finger, and the whole person feels it. Science agrees in its own way, because fingertips are packed with nerve endings. A skillful person is 手巧 (shǒu qiǎo), “hand-clever,” and when a job goes smoothly, people say 得心應手, “what the heart wants, the hand does.” Chinese even measures with the hand: 一把米 is a handful of rice that your fingers close around, and 一捧水 is the water you can carry in two cupped hands. English counts in hands too: a “handful,” a “pinch” of salt, and a horse's height is still measured in “hands.”
英文也用手來數:a handful(一把)、a pinch of salt(一小撮鹽),而馬的身高到今天還是用 hands(掌寬)來量。

Classroom Activity 1 ·

String Hand

You need ·

  • Thin cardboard, five drinking straws, and tape
  • Five pieces of string, each about 40 centimeters long, and scissors

Steps · 步驟

  1. Trace your hand on the cardboard and cut it out. Fold each finger gently where your own joints are.
  2. Cut the straws into short pieces and tape one piece on each part of every finger, with gaps at the folds. Tape a long piece on the palm below each finger.
  3. Thread a string through the straws of each finger, and tape its end at the fingertip.
  4. Hold the wrist and pull the strings one at a time. Can you make a fist? A pinch? A thumbs-up?

Teaching tip: the straws are the bones, the strings are the tendons, and the student's own pulling hand is the forearm muscle. Notice that a string can only pull: to open the hand again, something else has to pull the other way. That is why the back of your hand has its own set of tendons.

Classroom Activity 2 ·

Which Hand?

You need ·

  • Paper and a pencil for each student
  • A tally chart on the board

Steps · 步驟

  1. Write your name with the hand you usually use. Time it.
  2. Now write it with your other hand. Time it again, and compare the two.
  3. On the board, tally how many students write with the right hand and how many with the left.
  4. Is your class close to nine in ten? Practice with your other hand for a week. Does it get faster?

Teaching tip: left-handed students should never be made to switch. Use the activity to show that the “other” hand is not weak, only less practiced: the muscles and tendons are the same, and the difference is in the brain's practice. A small class may be far from nine in ten, and that is a good chance to talk about small samples.

This lesson is for learning about the body. It is not medical advice. Use paper tape for the thumb challenge, keep it loose, and take it off if anything hurts or tingles.
