When you run, your heart, lungs, and muscles all speed up together. Set the pace for a 3D runner, watch the heartbeat and breathing follow, and then take your own pulse before and after.
Working muscles need more oxygen, so your breathing and your heartbeat speed up to deliver it. With practice, the whole system gets better at the job.
3D Model · 3D 模型
The runner is a real skeleton with a heart, two lungs, and leg muscles drawn in. Choose a pace: rest, walk, jog, or sprint. The legs change at once, but watch the two numbers in the panel. The heartbeat and the breathing need a little time to catch up, and when the runner stops, they stay high for a while before they settle. The moving line draws that story for you.

The skeleton is a real one from BodyParts3D; the heart, lungs, muscles, and blood are our own drawing, and the running motion is a simple sketch. The numbers are for one example child of about ten: real heart rates differ a lot from person to person, so this model cannot tell you whether your own pulse is normal. The body really does take time to speed up and to recover; here that time is shortened so that you can watch it.

Reading ·
Run across the playground as fast as you can, and then stop. Your heart is pounding, you are breathing hard, and your face is hot. Nothing is wrong. Your body has just done something clever: several of its systems have sped up together to help your muscles.
It starts in the muscles. A working muscle uses energy many times faster than a resting one, and to get that energy it needs oxygen and fuel. Both arrive in the blood. So when your leg muscles start to work hard, they send out a call for more blood.
Your lungs and your heart answer the call. You breathe faster and deeper, so more oxygen enters your blood. Your heart beats faster, and each beat pushes out more blood. At rest, the heart of a child about ten years old beats about 60 to 100 times a minute. In a hard run it can beat much faster than that. At the same time, your blood vessels send more of the blood to the muscles that are working and less to places that can wait, such as your stomach.
All that work makes heat. To keep from getting too hot, your body sends warm blood to the skin, which is why your face turns red, and it makes sweat. As you learned in the lesson about skin, sweat cools you when it dries. That is also why you need to drink water when you exercise.
When you stop, your heartbeat and breathing do not drop at once. For a few minutes your body keeps working to pay back the oxygen it borrowed and to cool down. The better your fitness, the faster you recover. And fitness can be trained. If you are active often, your heart muscle grows stronger and pushes out more blood with every beat, so it does not have to beat as often. Some top long-distance athletes have a resting heart rate below 50.
How much is enough? The World Health Organization says that children and teenagers should be active for an average of at least 60 minutes a day, hard enough to make them breathe faster. It does not have to be a sport: fast walking, dancing, cycling, and playing tag all count. In Taiwan, schools also plan at least 150 minutes of activity a week outside of PE class. Now find out what your own heart does: use the pulse card below the model.

The Exercise Team ·
Think of a restaurant at lunchtime: when the orders pour in, the kitchen cooks faster, the waiters walk faster, and the fans are turned up. No one part can speed up alone.
They use oxygen and fuel to pull on your bones, and they make heat while they do it.
They breathe faster and deeper, and they also get rid of the extra carbon dioxide your muscles make.
It beats faster, and each beat pushes out more blood.
They open wider in working muscles and in the skin, and narrow in places that can wait.
Sweat carries heat away when it dries, so you need to drink water to replace it.
Measure Yourself ·
Take your pulse three times and use the pulse card below the model. You learned how to find your pulse in the lesson about blood: two fingers on the thumb side of your wrist.
Myth vs. Fact ·
Sore muscles the next day are caused by lactic acid.
Lactic acid is gone within about an hour. The soreness a day or two later comes from tiny damage in the muscle fibers, which the body then repairs.
A slow resting heartbeat means a weak heart.
A well-trained heart pushes out more blood with each beat, so it can beat less often. Top endurance athletes often have very slow resting heart rates.
Only sports count as exercise.
Anything that makes you breathe faster counts: fast walking, dancing, cycling, climbing stairs, or playing tag.
You should not drink water while you exercise.
You lose water as sweat, and your body needs it back. Small sips during and after exercise are a good idea.
Muscles need oxygen. Lungs bring it in, and the heart delivers it.
Warm blood goes to the skin, and sweat carries the heat away.
A pulse that comes back down quickly is one sign of a fit body.
At least 60 minutes of activity a day, hard enough to make you breathe faster.
In Chinese ·
When you have run too hard, Chinese says 上氣不接下氣 (shàng qì bù jiē xià qì): “the breath above cannot catch the breath below.” English says you are “out of breath.” To loosen up, people say 活動筋骨 (huódòng jīngǔ), “get the tendons and bones moving,” which names the same parts you met in the lessons on muscles and hands. Taiwan's schools have their own number for moving: SH150, which stands for Sports and Health, 150 minutes of activity a week outside of PE class. The name is new, but the idea is very old: a body that moves stays strong.

Teaching tip: do not compare students' numbers. Resting pulses differ a lot among healthy children, and a higher or lower number does not mean better or worse. Compare the shape instead: up fast, down more slowly. Students who should not do jumping jacks can be the timekeepers, and their flat line is a useful comparison.

Teaching tip: speaking uses the same air as breathing, so the talk test is a simple way to feel how hard the body is working without any equipment. “Can talk but not sing” is a common everyday description of moderate activity. Link it to the lesson on voice: no air, no voice.
