Your voice starts as a buzz in your throat, and your tongue and lips shape it into words. Watch the vocal folds open and close in 3D, change the pitch and the mouth shape, and feel the difference between “sss” and “zzz.”
Your voice is made in three steps: air from your lungs, a buzz from your vocal folds, and a shape from your tongue, lips, and jaw.

The head is cut down the middle again. Air comes up the real windpipe and passes between the vocal folds. Switch the voice on, and the folds close and buzz; switch it off, and they stay open. Slide the pitch and watch the folds stretch. Then pick a mouth shape: “ah,” “ee,” and “oo” use the same buzz with a different tongue and jaw. For “sss” and “fff,” the voice switch is the only difference from “zzz” and “vvv.” Press Listen to hear a simple computer voice do the same thing.

The skull bones, the tongue, and the windpipe are real shapes from BodyParts3D, in their real places; the face outline, the voice box, the vocal folds, and the air are our own drawing. The real tongue changes its shape for every sound; here it only moves and tilts, so the mouth shapes are rough sketches. Real vocal folds open and close more than a hundred times a second, far too fast to see, so the model shows them in slow motion. The Listen button plays a very simple computer voice at a low volume: a buzz and a few filters, not a recording of a person.

Reading ·
Put two fingers gently on the front of your throat and say “ahh.” Do you feel a buzz? Now whisper “ahh.” The buzz is gone. That buzz is your voice being made. Your body does it in three steps, and you can remember them with three words: air, buzz, and shape.
The first step is air. To speak, you breathe out. Your lungs push air up your windpipe, the tube that you met in the lesson about breathing. Without moving air, there is no voice at all. Try to speak while you hold your breath, and you will see.
The second step is the buzz. At the top of your windpipe is your voice box, which is also called the larynx. Inside it are two small folds of soft tissue called the vocal folds, or vocal cords. When you breathe, they stay open, and air passes between them without a sound. When you speak, they close. The air pushes them apart, and they snap back together, again and again, chopping the stream of air into tiny puffs. That is the buzz you felt with your fingers.
How fast do the vocal folds open and close? Much faster than you can see. In a man's voice, they do it about 125 times every second. In a woman's voice, it is about 210 times, and in a child's voice, more than 300. Faster means a higher sound. To sing a high note, tiny muscles stretch your vocal folds longer and tighter, like a rubber band pulled tight. Children have high voices because their vocal folds are short. As you grow, they get longer, and your voice gets lower.
The third step is the shape. A buzz is not a word yet. The sound travels up through your throat and your mouth, and you change it by moving your tongue, your lips, and your jaw. Say “ah,” “ee,” and “oo” on one note. The buzz stays the same, but your mouth makes a different shape for each one, and you hear three different vowels.
Some sounds use no buzz at all. Put your fingers on your throat again and say a long “sss,” and then a long “zzz.” Your mouth does exactly the same thing for both. The only difference is that your vocal folds buzz for “zzz” and rest for “sss.” The same is true for “fff” and “vvv.” English is full of pairs like these, and getting the buzz right is a big part of a clear accent. Now try the buzz check below the model.

Your Voice Team ·
Think of a guitar: your lungs are the hand that plucks, your vocal folds are the string, and your mouth is the hollow body that gives the sound its color.
You speak while you breathe out. More air makes a louder voice.

Two small folds. Open for breathing, closed and buzzing for voice. Stretched tight for high notes.
High or low, front or back: every vowel has its own tongue position.
They squeeze or stop the air for sounds like f, v, p, b, and m.

Myth vs. Fact ·
Your voice is made in your mouth.
The sound starts in the voice box, in your throat. Your mouth only shapes it.
The vocal cords are strings, like the strings of a guitar.
They are two soft folds of tissue. That is why scientists now prefer the name “vocal folds.”
To speak louder, your vocal folds have to move faster.
Faster makes your voice higher, not louder. For a louder voice, your lungs push more air.
✗ Myth · 迷思“S” and “z” are made in different parts of the mouth.s 和 z 是嘴巴裡不同的地方發出來的。
✓ Fact · 事實The tongue and lips are in exactly the same place. Only the buzz is different.
Lungs push the air, vocal folds make the buzz, and the mouth gives it a shape.
Buzz means voiced: z, v, and all the vowels. No buzz means voiceless: s and f.
Like a rubber band: pull it tighter, and the note goes up.
“Ah,” “ee,” and “oo” are one buzz in three different mouth shapes.
In Chinese ·
Chinese has a four-character phrase for good speaking: 字正腔圓 (zì zhèng qiāng yuán), “the words are correct and the tone is round.” It comes from the world of traditional opera, where singers train for years to shape every sound. Notice the two halves: 字, the word, is made by the tongue and lips, and 腔, the tone, is made by the voice. That is the same split you learned in this lesson: the shape and the buzz. Chinese adds one more job for the vocal folds. In Mandarin and Taiwanese, the pitch of a syllable changes its meaning, so the folds are busy stretching and relaxing in every word. English uses pitch too, but for feeling and for questions, not to tell one word from another.

Teaching tip: thinner, tighter, and shorter all give a higher note. Vocal folds follow the same rules, and that is why a child's short folds make a high voice. Ask students to watch a band closely as it sounds: the blur is the vibration. The box matters too: pluck a band in the air, and it is much quieter, just as a buzz without a mouth would be.

Teaching tip: Mandarin has an “s” and an “f,” but it has no “z” as in “zoo” and no “v,” so many students in Taiwan say “sue” for “zoo” and “fan” for “van.” The finger test gives them something they can feel, not just hear. Praise the buzz, not the accent.
