Cornea角膜
It has no blood vessels, so it stays perfectly clear. It gets its oxygen straight from the air and from your tears.

Light bends inside your eye and paints an upside-down picture at the back. Focus a 3D eye near and far, fix blurry vision with glasses, and find the blind spot in your own eye.
Your eye works like a camera. The cornea and the lens bend light to make a sharp, upside-down picture on the retina, and your brain turns it right side up. Where the optic nerve leaves the eye, there are no light-sensing cells, so every eye has a blind spot.
3D Model · 3D 模型
Pick something far or near, and watch light from its top and bottom cross inside the eye and land upside down on the retina. Turn the light up and down to see the pupil change, focus the lens yourself, then switch to a nearsighted or farsighted eye and put on glasses. The blind spot button shows where light goes when part of a picture disappears.

The skull is real, from the same BodyParts3D skeleton as Lesson 1; the eye is our own drawing, shown five times bigger than life and cut in half so you can see inside. The distances to the tree and the plant are not to scale, and the focusing errors are made bigger so they are easy to see. Young eyes can usually focus even closer than this model does.

Reading ·
Look up from this page at something far away, then look back down. Your eyes just changed their focus twice, and you probably did not even notice. Each eye is a ball about 2.4 centimeters across, filled with a clear jelly. Light bounces off everything around you, and some of it enters your eyes. Inside, the light is bent to make a tiny, sharp picture at the back of each eye, a lot like the picture inside a camera. Your eyes collect the light, but the seeing itself happens in your brain.
The front of the eye lets light in. First comes the cornea, a clear, curved window that does most of the bending of light. Behind it is the iris, the colored part of your eye, which is a ring of muscle. The black circle in the middle of the iris is the pupil, and it is simply a hole. In bright sunlight, the iris makes the pupil as small as 2 millimeters to keep out extra light. In the dark, it opens the pupil to about 8 millimeters to catch as much light as it can. When you walk into a dark movie theater, your pupils open wide in seconds, but your eyes need several more minutes to get used to the dark.
Behind the pupil is the lens, which fine-tunes the focus. A ring of tiny muscles around it changes its shape. To see something far away, the lens is pulled flatter. To see something up close, the muscles tighten and the lens gets rounder, so it bends light more. Light from each point of an object comes together at one point on the retina, the thin layer at the back of the eye. But here is a surprise: the picture on your retina is upside down and flipped left to right. Your brain sorts this out, so the world looks right side up.
The retina is where light turns into nerve signals. It has more than 120 million light-sensing cells of two kinds. Rods work in dim light but cannot see color, which is why things look gray at night. Cones need brighter light, and they let you see colors and fine details. The signals leave the eye through the optic nerve, a cable of about a million nerve fibers. Where the optic nerve leaves the eye, there are no light-sensing cells at all, so every eye has a blind spot. You never notice it, because your two eyes cover for each other and your brain fills in the gap.
Some eyes have trouble focusing. In a nearsighted eye, the eyeball is a little too long. Light from faraway things comes to a point in front of the retina, so the board at school looks blurry, but a book up close looks sharp. In a farsighted eye, the eyeball is a little too short, so things up close are harder to see clearly. Glasses fix both problems by bending the light a little before it enters the eye. Lenses for nearsighted eyes are thinner in the middle and spread the light out. Lenses for farsighted eyes are thicker in the middle and bring the light together.
Taiwan has one of the highest rates of nearsightedness in the world, and most students here are nearsighted by the end of elementary school. Scientists have found that children who spend more time outdoors are less likely to become nearsighted, which is why Taiwan encourages two hours outside every day. When you read or use a screen, keep it at least 30 centimeters away, and every 30 minutes, rest your eyes for 10 minutes by looking far away. Never look straight at the Sun. Now try the blind spot test below the model and find the hole in your own vision.

Parts of the Eye ·
Think of a camera: the cornea and the lens are the camera's lens, the pupil is the opening that lets light in, the retina is the image sensor, and the optic nerve is the cable to the computer, which is your brain.
It has no blood vessels, so it stays perfectly clear. It gets its oxygen straight from the air and from your tears.
Brown, blue, green, or gray, the iris is a muscle that makes the pupil smaller in bright light and bigger in the dark.
Tiny muscles let it get rounder for things up close and flatter for things far away.
More than 120 million rods and cones. The sharpest spot, the fovea, sits right where you are looking.
About a million nerve fibers. Where it leaves the eye, there are no light-sensing cells: that is your blind spot.
Measure Yourself ·
Use the blind spot card below the model, or draw your own on paper: a small cross and a dot about 8 cm apart. Every eye has a blind spot. Here is how to catch yours.
Myth vs. Fact ·
If you cross your eyes, they might get stuck that way.
The muscles that move your eyes always relax again. Crossing your eyes may feel funny, but it cannot make them stay crossed.
Eating lots of carrots gives you super night vision.
Carrots have vitamin A, which your eyes need, but extra carrots will not make healthy eyes better than normal. The story spread in Britain during World War II, partly to keep its new radar a secret.
✗ Myth · 迷思Wearing glasses makes your eyes weaker.
Glasses do not change the shape of your eye. They only bend light so the picture lands on the retina. Many children's eyes keep changing as they grow, with or without glasses.
You see with your eyes.
Your eyes only collect light. The seeing happens in your brain, which makes sense of the upside-down picture and fills in your blind spot.
The iris works like a camera's opening: small in sunlight, wide open in the dark.
To look at something close, tiny muscles tighten and the lens gets rounder. Looking far away lets them relax, and the lens flattens.
Both start with C. Rods take over in dim light, which is why the world looks gray at night.
The eye makes an upside-down picture, and the brain sorts it out so you see the world right side up.
In Chinese ·
Look closely into a friend's eye, and you will see a tiny picture of yourself. English and Chinese both noticed this. The English word pupil comes from the Latin pupilla, “little doll.” In Chinese, the pupil is 瞳孔 (tóngkǒng); the 童 in 瞳 mainly gives the sound, but the pupil is also called 瞳人 (tóngrén), “the person in the eye.” Chinese names the two focusing problems simply: 近視 (jìnshì), “near-seeing,” and 遠視 (yuǎnshì), “far-seeing.” And the saying 眼見為憑, “what the eyes see is proof,” may be worth a second thought once you have found your blind spot.
Classroom Activity 1 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: the pinhole is the pupil and the wax paper is the retina, and the picture is upside down, just like in your eye. Make the hole bigger and the picture gets brighter but blurrier. A real eye adds a lens, so its picture is bright and sharp at the same time. Never point the viewer at the Sun.
Classroom Activity 2 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: the two pupils usually change together, because the brain controls them as a pair, so the open eye's pupil gets a little bigger too. Never shine a flashlight or a phone light into anyone's eyes.
