Signals race along your nerves faster than a bullet train. Watch them in slow motion, find out why a reflex beats thinking, and test your own reaction time.
Your nerves carry signals in two directions: from your senses to your brain, and from your brain to your muscles. For some emergencies, your spinal cord takes a shortcut and acts before your brain even knows.
3D Model · 3D 模型
Pick a moment, and glowing signals travel along the nerves in slow motion while the clock counts real milliseconds. Compare catching a ruler, which needs your brain, with touching a hot pan, where your spinal cord acts first. Then take the reaction test below the model, and play the ruler catch at your own speed.

Reaction test ·
Tap the ruler box to start. When the ruler starts to fall, tap as fast as you can. Try five times.
The bones are real, from the same BodyParts3D skeleton as Lesson 1; the brain and nerves are simplified drawings. Real nerves branch into thousands of smaller nerves. The milliseconds are typical estimates: nerve signals travel at roughly 50 to 120 meters per second, muscles take tens of milliseconds to tighten, and pain from heat travels on much slower nerves.

Reading ·
Someone tosses you a ball. In less than half a second, your eyes see it, your brain figures out where it is going, and your arms move to catch it. All of that is the work of your nervous system: your brain, your spinal cord, and the nerves that reach every part of your body. An adult brain weighs only about 1.4 kilograms, but it has around 86 billion nerve cells, and it uses about a fifth of all the energy your body burns.
Nerve cells, called neurons, are long and thin, and they pass messages as tiny electrical signals. The fastest signals travel at about 120 meters per second, more than 400 kilometers an hour, which is faster than Taiwan's high-speed rail. Nerves are bundles of these cells, and they carry messages in two directions. Sensory nerves bring news in from your eyes, ears, skin, and other senses. Motor nerves carry orders out to your muscles.
Your spinal cord is the main cable. It is about as thick as your finger and about 45 centimeters long, protected inside your backbone, and pairs of nerves branch off it to every part of the body. At the top sits the brain. The large, wrinkly cerebrum handles thinking, the senses, and movement. Its two halves cross over: the left half runs the right side of your body, and the right half runs the left. The cerebellum at the back helps with balance and smooth movement, and the brainstem keeps you breathing and keeps your heart beating without you ever thinking about it.
Some messages never wait for the brain. If you touch a hot pan, a signal shoots to your spinal cord, and the spinal cord sends an order straight back: pull away! Your hand moves before you even feel the pain, which arrives a moment later on slower nerves. This kind of automatic, lightning-fast action is called a reflex. When a doctor taps just below your knee and your leg kicks, that is a reflex too, and it shows the doctor that your nerves are working.
Things that need a decision take longer. To catch a falling ruler, your eyes must see it, your brain must decide, and then the order must travel down to your hand. For most people, that takes about two tenths of a second, and during that time the ruler falls about 20 centimeters. Practice can make you a little faster. Being tired or distracted, for example by looking at a phone, makes you slower, which is why it is dangerous to cross the street while texting.
Your brain changes every time you learn something. Each time you practice a skill, the connections between your neurons get stronger, which is why practice makes things easier. Sleep matters too: while you sleep, your brain sorts and stores what you learned during the day. And because your brain cannot be replaced, wear a helmet when you ride a bike or scooter. Now try the reaction test below the model and see how far your ruler falls.

In Chinese ·
The word for nerve, 神經 (shénjīng), was made up in Japan in 1774, when the doctor Sugita Genpaku translated a Dutch anatomy book. He joined 神, from 神氣 (spirit), with 經, from 經脈 (the body's channels in Chinese medicine), and the word later spread to Chinese. Everyday Chinese also talks about the brain with 腦筋: to think hard is 動腦筋, “move your brain sinews,” and a brain teaser is a 腦筋急轉彎, “a sharp turn for the brain.”
