Sound is air that shakes. Follow it through your eardrum and three tiny bones into a snail-shaped tube, and find the highest note you can still hear.
Sound is air shaking. Your eardrum catches the shaking, three tiny bones pass it on, and the cochlea turns it into nerve signals: high sounds near its entrance, low sounds deep inside.

Pick a sound, and watch the air shake its way down the ear canal, rock the three tiny bones, and light up the cochlea: high notes near the entrance, low notes at the tip. Change the pitch and the loudness, uncoil the cochlea to see the whole map, and spin around to see why you get dizzy. Then take the hearing test below the model.

🔉 Quiet room, speakers only, no earphones. Every note is short and quiet. Stop if anything feels uncomfortable.
The skull is real, from the same BodyParts3D skeleton as Lesson 1; the ear is our own drawing, shown four times bigger than life and cut open. BodyParts3D has no ear bones, so we drew the hammer, anvil, and stirrup ourselves. The outer ear is drawn smaller than it would be at this size, and the air waves are slowed down so much that you can see them. Where each pitch lands along the cochlea follows the Greenwood formula used by hearing scientists.

Reading ·
Clap your hands. The clap pushes the air, and the push travels outward in waves at about 340 meters per second, fast enough to cross a soccer field in a third of a second. When the waves reach you, the air in your ear shakes back and forth, and your ears turn that shaking into sound. Fast shaking sounds high, like a bird. Slow shaking sounds low, like a drum. Scientists count the shakes in hertz: one hertz means one shake every second. Young people can hear from about 20 to 20,000 hertz.
The part of your ear that you can see is shaped to catch sound and send it into the ear canal, a tube about 2.5 centimeters long. At the end of the canal is the eardrum, a thin, tight skin about as wide as your little fingernail. When sound waves hit it, the eardrum shakes, just like the skin of a drum. The canal also makes earwax, which traps dust and germs and slowly moves out on its own. That is why doctors say you should never push cotton swabs into your ears.
Behind the eardrum is a tiny space filled with air, and in it are the three smallest bones in your body: the hammer, the anvil, and the stirrup. They pass the shaking along like a lever and make it about twenty times stronger. The stirrup is only about 3 millimeters long, smaller than a grain of rice. A thin tube connects this space to the back of your nose. When your ears pop in an elevator or on an airplane, that tube has just opened to let air in or out.
The stirrup pushes on the cochlea, a tube rolled up like a snail shell and filled with liquid. Inside are about 15,000 hair cells, each topped with tiny hairs that bend when the liquid moves. High notes bend the hairs near the entrance of the cochlea, and low notes travel all the way to its tip. The bending makes nerve signals, which race along the hearing nerve to your brain. Each ear sends signals to both sides of the brain, and by comparing your two ears, your brain can tell which direction a sound came from.
Next to the cochlea are three loops filled with liquid, called the semicircular canals. They do not hear at all. Instead, they help you keep your balance. When you turn your head, the liquid in the loops sloshes and bends more hair cells, telling your brain which way you moved. If you spin around and stop suddenly, the liquid keeps swirling for a moment, so your brain thinks you are still turning. That is why you feel dizzy.
Hair cells cannot grow back once they are damaged, so loud sounds can harm your hearing for life. Loudness is measured in decibels. Talking is about 60 decibels, and busy traffic is about 85. Sounds that loud or louder can harm your hearing if you listen for a long time. Firecrackers at a temple festival can be louder than 120 decibels, so cover your ears or keep your distance. With earphones, keep the volume low and take breaks. Now try the hearing test below the model and find the highest note you can hear.

Parts of the Ear ·
Think of a relay race: the outer ear catches the sound, the eardrum and the three tiny bones pass the shaking along, and the cochlea hands it to the nerve as a signal for your brain.
Its curves catch sound and send it in. The canal makes earwax, which cleans itself out.
A thin, tight skin about as wide as your little fingernail. It moves less than the width of an atom for the quietest sounds.
The hammer, anvil, and stirrup work like a lever and make the push about twenty times stronger.
About 15,000 hair cells, with high notes at the entrance and low notes at the tip, like a piano rolled up.
They point in three directions, so together they can feel your head nod, shake, and tilt.
Measure Yourself ·
The hearing test below the model plays short, quiet notes, starting at 8,000 hertz and climbing higher. Do it in a quiet room with your device's speakers, not earphones.
Myth vs. Fact ·
You should clean inside your ears with cotton swabs.
Earwax cleans itself out. Cotton swabs can push the wax deeper or even hurt the eardrum. Just wash the outside of your ears.
Only old people lose their hearing.
Loud sounds can damage hair cells at any age, and they never grow back. That is why it matters to protect your hearing now.
In space, you could hear a rocket roar.
Space is almost empty, with no air to shake, so sound cannot travel there. Astronauts talk to each other by radio.
Your voice sounds the same to you as it does to everyone else.
You hear your own voice through the air and also through the bones of your head, which makes it sound deeper. That is why your voice sounds strange in a recording.
Think of a blacksmith and a horse rider: the hammer hits the anvil, and the rider's foot rests in the stirrup. That is their order from the eardrum inward.
High notes bend hair cells near the entrance of the cochlea; low notes travel all the way to the tip.
Count the seconds between the lightning and the thunder, then divide by 3. That is about how many kilometers away the storm is.
A common rule of thumb: no more than 60 percent of the volume, for no more than 60 minutes at a time.
In Chinese ·
In Chinese, 聰明 (cōngmíng) means smart, but the two characters began with the senses: 耳聰目明, ears that hear clearly and eyes that see clearly. Look closely, and 聰 has 耳, the character for ear, on its left side. Confucius said that by sixty, his ears were “in tune” (六十而耳順): he could listen to anything calmly. And 耳濡目染, “what the ears soak up and the eyes take in,” means learning from what you hear and see every day, which is a great way to learn English, too.

Teaching tip: sound is shaking, and a tight string carries the shaking from one cup to the other. The bottom of the cup works like an eardrum. A loose or pinched string cannot pass the shaking along, just as a damaged eardrum or stiff ear bones make hearing harder.
Classroom Activity 2 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: your brain finds a sound's direction by comparing the two ears: the sound reaches the nearer ear a tiny bit sooner and a little louder. With one ear covered, the guesses usually get much worse. Sounds straight in front or straight behind are the hardest.
