The forearm bones are real, from the same BodyParts3D skeleton as Lesson 1; the skin is our own drawing, shown 25 times bigger than life. The top layer is drawn thicker than it really is, and real skin has many more hairs, glands, and sensors packed into a space this size. The sun tool estimates the UV index for a clear sky; clouds, haze, and shade lower it.

Reading ·
Your skin is your body's biggest organ. Spread out flat, an adult's skin would cover about 2 square meters, about the size of a single bed. It is waterproof, it stretches, and it repairs itself when you get a scrape. Most importantly, it is a wall that keeps germs, dirt, and harmful chemicals outside your body, and it keeps the water inside your body from drying out.
Skin has three layers. The top layer, the epidermis, is thinner than a sheet of paper on most of your body. Its outside is made of flat, dead cells that flake off all the time, and new cells from below replace the whole layer about once a month. Under it is the dermis, a thicker, stretchy layer that holds blood vessels, nerves, sweat glands, and the roots of your hairs. At the bottom is a layer of fat that works like a cushion and a warm blanket.
Skin also helps control your temperature. You have between 2 and 4 million sweat glands. On a hot day, they pour sweat onto your skin, and as the sweat evaporates, it carries heat away. The blood vessels near the surface also widen to let heat out, which is why you look red after running. When you are cold, those blood vessels narrow, and tiny muscles pull your hairs upright, giving you goosebumps.
Your skin is full of sensors. Some feel a light touch, some feel a hard press, and others feel heat, cold, itching, and pain. Your fingertips and lips have the most, which is why you read with your fingertips when you feel for something in the dark. Your fingertips also have ridges called fingerprints. They formed before you were born, and no two people have the same ones, not even identical twins.
Sunlight is good for skin in small amounts, because skin uses it to make vitamin D, which you need for strong bones. But sunlight also carries ultraviolet light, or UV, which you cannot see. To protect itself, skin makes a dark substance called melanin, and a tan is a sign that your skin has already been harmed by UV. Too much UV causes sunburn, and over many years it can lead to wrinkles and skin cancer.
Scientists measure the strength of UV with the UV index. When it is 3 or higher, you need protection, and in Taiwan it often goes above 10 on summer days around noon. A simple test: if your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun is strong. Wear a hat, cover up, look for shade, and use sunscreen. Now check how strong the sun is in Changhua today with the tool below the model.

Soft fat cushions bumps, keeps you warm, and stores energy.
Two to four million of them. Sweat cools you as it evaporates from your skin.
Different sensors feel light touch, pressure, heat, cold, itching, and pain. Fingertips have the most.

Myth vs. Fact ·
You can't get sunburned on a cloudy day.
Most UV passes through light clouds. You can get burned on a cloudy day, especially around noon in summer.
A tan means your skin is healthy.
A tan is your skin's way of protecting itself after UV has already damaged it.
Fresh sweat has almost no smell. The smell comes from bacteria on your skin breaking the sweat down.
✗ Myth · 迷思Goosebumps keep people warm.
In furry animals, raised fur traps a layer of warm air. People have so little body hair that goosebumps help only a little.
If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun is high and its UV is strong.
A famous sun-safety rule from Australia: slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat.
The epidermis sits on top of the dermis. Derma is Greek for skin.
epidermis(表皮)在 dermis(真皮)的上面;derma 是希臘文的「皮膚」。
Sweat cools you only when it evaporates. Dripping sweat that just falls off does not help much.
In Chinese ·
English says goosebumps, and Chinese says 雞皮疙瘩 (jīpí gēda), “chicken-skin bumps.” Both languages compared our cold skin to a plucked bird. The classic 《孝經》 (Classic of Filial Piety) begins with a line many Taiwanese students know: 身體髮膚,受之父母 (shēntǐ fàfū, shòu zhī fùmǔ), “your body, hair, and skin come from your parents,” so taking care of them is the first way to show respect. Hats and sunscreen count!
Classroom Activity 1 ·
You need ·

Teaching tip: loops are the most common pattern, then whorls, and arches are the rarest. Even identical twins have different fingerprints, because tiny differences in the womb shape the ridges.
Classroom Activity 2 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: the wet one cools down because evaporating water carries heat away, just like sweat. On a humid day, sweat evaporates slowly, which is why sticky summer days in Taiwan feel so hot.
