Your lunch takes a trip of several meters and a day or more. Follow one bite through the mouth, stomach, and intestines, and find out where your own lunch is right now.
Digestion breaks food into pieces small enough to pass into your blood. Your mouth and stomach break it down, your small intestine takes in the goodness, and your large intestine takes back the water.

The bones are real, from the same BodyParts3D skeleton as Lesson 1; the organs are simplified drawings in about the right places. The times are typical for an adult, but they vary a lot from person to person and meal to meal. The time slider is not to scale: the mouth and esophagus take seconds, the large intestine a day or more.

Reading ·
Think about the lunch you ate today, maybe rice, vegetables, and a piece of fish. Over the next day or two, that lunch will travel through a tube several meters long that runs from your mouth all the way through your body. On the way, it will be crushed, soaked, mixed, and broken into pieces so tiny that they can pass into your blood, which carries them to every cell. This is digestion.
Digestion starts before you even swallow. Your front teeth cut, and your back teeth grind. Your mouth makes about a liter of saliva every day, which wets the food and starts to turn starch into sugar. That is why a plain cracker begins to taste a little sweet if you chew it for a long time. Your tongue then rolls the food into a soft ball and pushes it to the back of your throat. As you swallow, a small flap closes over your windpipe, so the food goes down the right way.
The esophagus is a muscle tube about 25 centimeters long. Rings of muscle squeeze one after another, pushing the food down to the stomach in about ten seconds. Gravity is not needed: astronauts can eat and swallow in space. The stomach is a stretchy, J-shaped bag on the left side of your upper belly. Its walls churn the food for two to four hours and mix it with a strong acid and juices, turning lunch into a thick soup called chyme. A layer of mucus protects the stomach from its own acid.
Next comes the small intestine, a narrow tube about 5 meters long, coiled up in the middle of your belly. Here, juices from the pancreas and bile from the liver, stored in the gallbladder, finish breaking the food down. The inside wall is covered with millions of tiny, finger-like bumps called villi, which soak up the nutrients and pass them into the blood. Most of the real work of digestion happens here, over three to five hours.
What is left moves into the large intestine. It is wider than the small intestine but much shorter, about 1.5 meters long, and it wraps around the small intestine like a frame. Its main job is to take water back into the body. It is also home to trillions of helpful bacteria, which break down some of the leftovers and even make vitamins your body can use. After a day or more, whatever your body cannot use leaves the body. From lunch to the end, the whole trip usually takes one to three days.
You can help your digestion every day. Chew slowly, drink water, and eat fiber, which you get from vegetables, fruit, beans, and whole grains. Fiber cannot be digested, but it keeps food moving smoothly and feeds your helpful gut bacteria. Now look at the clock. What time did you eat lunch today? Type it into the model and find out where your lunch is right now.

Myth vs. Fact ·
Swallowed gum stays in your stomach for seven years.
Your body cannot digest gum, but it does not stay. It moves through and leaves the body within a few days, like other things you cannot digest. Still, gum is for chewing, not swallowing.
Most digestion happens in the stomach.
The stomach churns and starts breaking food down, but most digestion, and almost all the taking in of nutrients, happens in the small intestine.
Food falls down to your stomach because of gravity.
Muscles in the esophagus squeeze the food along. That is why you can swallow lying down, and why astronauts can eat in space.
Stomach ulcers are mostly caused by stress and spicy food.
Many ulcers are caused by a kind of bacteria called H. pylori. Two Australian doctors showed this, and one of them even drank the bacteria to prove it. They won a Nobel Prize in 2005.
Mouth chews, stomach churns, small intestine soaks up nutrients, large intestine takes back water.
The names are about width, not length: the small intestine is about 5 meters long, the large intestine only about 1.5 meters, but much wider.
Food is squeezed through your whole digestive tract by waves of muscle, from your throat to the very end.
Minutes in the mouth, seconds down the esophagus, hours in the stomach and small intestine, a day or more in the large intestine.
In Chinese ·
The Chinese word for digestion, 消化 (xiāohuà), joins 消, to melt away, with 化, to change. Chinese also uses it for ideas: to 消化 a lesson means to really understand it. The idiom 囫圇吞棗 describes swallowing a date whole without chewing, which means reading or learning something without taking it in. The opposite advice for eating is 細嚼慢嚥: chew finely, swallow slowly. And the everyday word for a meal, 吃飯, simply means to eat rice.
Classroom Activity 1 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: these are rough adult lengths, and in a living person the small intestine is often shorter because its muscles keep it bunched up. Coil the small-intestine string into a small pile to show how it fits.
Classroom Activity 2 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: the liquid that drips through stands for the nutrients passing into the blood, and what stays inside moves on to the large intestine. Do not eat the materials, and wipe up spills right away.
