Hinge
Swings like a door: bend and straighten, nothing else.
Try it · 試試看Sit down and try to swing your lower leg sideways from the knee. It will not go.
The Human Body · Lesson 5 ·
A knee swings like a door, but a shoulder can draw a circle. Move six real joints in 3D, then measure how far your own joints bend.
A joint is a place where bones meet. Its shape decides how it moves: a hinge swings one way, a ball in a socket turns every way, and a pivot twists.
3D Model · 3D 模型
Pick a joint below the model. The bones that move turn gold, and the shaded fan shows how far that joint can usually go. Drag the sliders: a hinge has one, a ball-and-socket has three. Then press the circle button. Which joints can draw a circle, and which can only swing back and forth?

The bones are real, from the same BodyParts3D skeleton as Lesson 1. The ranges are typical adult numbers; everyone is a little different. In a real body, raising your arm high also turns your shoulder blade, and turning your head uses all seven neck bones, not just the top two. The model simplifies both.

Reading ·
Try walking across the room without bending your knees. You will waddle like a penguin. Now try eating lunch without bending your elbows. Every time you move, bones change their angle at places where two bones meet. These places are called joints, and your body has several hundred of them, from your jaw to your smallest toe.
Not every joint moves. The bones of your skull are joined by wavy seams called sutures, which lock them together like puzzle pieces to protect your brain. A newborn baby's skull still has soft spots between the bones so that the head can grow, but they close by about the age of two. The joints between the bones of your spine move only a little each, but together they let you bend and twist. The joints that move the most are in your arms and legs.
Inside a moving joint, the ends of the bones never grind against each other. Each end is covered with cartilage, a smooth, rubbery layer that is more slippery than ice sliding on ice. The whole joint is wrapped in a capsule filled with a little slippery liquid called synovial fluid, which works like oil in a machine. Strong straps called ligaments hold the bones together, so they can move without coming apart.
The shape of a joint decides how it moves. Your knee and elbow are hinge joints: like a door, they swing one way and back. Your shoulder and hip are ball-and-socket joints: a round ball at the top of the arm or thigh bone sits in a cup, so the limb can swing forward, backward, out to the side, and even in a circle. At the top of your neck, a pivot joint lets your head turn to say “no.” And at the base of your thumb is a saddle joint, which rocks two ways and lets your thumb touch the tip of every other finger.
There is always a trade-off between freedom and strength. Your shoulder has a shallow cup, which gives it the widest range of any joint in the body, but it is also the large joint that most often slips out of place. Your hip has a deep cup that holds the ball tightly. It cannot move as freely, but it can carry your whole weight when you run and jump. Your knee, the largest joint in the body, has two rubbery cushions inside and several strong ligaments to keep it steady.
Joints stay healthy when you use them. Moving squeezes fluid in and out of the cartilage, which keeps it fed, and strong muscles around a joint help protect it. Warm up before sports, and never force a joint past where it wants to go. And the popping sound when someone cracks their knuckles? It is a tiny gas bubble forming in the joint fluid. Now make a simple tool to measure how far your own joints can bend.

Try it · 試試看Gently feel the top of your head. It is one hard helmet, with no hinges.
Not in the 3D model ·
Measure Yourself ·
Make a simple joint-angle meter, then work with a partner to measure how far your knee and elbow bend. Compare your numbers with the typical ranges shown on the sliders in the model.
Myth vs. Fact ·
✗ Myth · 迷思Cracking your knuckles causes arthritis.
The pop is a gas bubble forming in the joint fluid. Studies have not found that knuckle cracking causes arthritis, though it can annoy the people around you.
In a joint, bone rubs directly on bone.
Smooth cartilage covers the bone ends, and slippery fluid fills the space. Bones only grind when the cartilage has worn away, which is a sign of disease.
Double-jointed people have extra joints.「雙關節」的人多了一些關節。
✓ Fact · 事實They have the same joints as everyone else. Their ligaments are looser, or their joint shapes are a little different, so they can bend farther.
Stiff joints should be kept still.
Gentle movement keeps joints healthy by moving fluid through the cartilage. The exception is an injury: then follow what a doctor says.
Hinge = door, ball-and-socket = joystick, pivot = doorknob. Name the object, and you know the move.
If a limb can draw a circle in the air from that joint, it is a ball-and-socket. A hinge can only draw an arc.
Same kind of joint, different cups: shallow for reaching, deep for carrying weight.
Your thumb's saddle joint lets it face the other fingers. That is why you can grip a pencil and pick up a coin.
In Chinese ·
The Chinese word for joint, 關節 (guānjié), joins two pictures. 關 is a gate or a mountain pass, a narrow place that things must move through. 節 is the node on a bamboo stem, where one section meets the next, just as one bone meets another. The same 節 appears in 季節 (season) and 節日 (festival), marking where one stretch of time meets the next. And when something is the key point of a problem, Chinese calls it 關鍵 or says you have found the 節骨眼, the “joint-bone eye.”
Classroom Activity 1 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: keep the tape loose and take it off after a few minutes. Afterward, look at the thumb in the 3D model and press the circle button: its saddle joint is what lets it face the other fingers.
Classroom Activity 2 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: the wrist and ankle are good puzzles. They move in two directions but cannot twist much, because many small gliding joints work together. Accept good reasoning even when the answer is “it's a mix.”
