The Earth turns, the Sun stays
Watch the Earth turn from west to east under a Sun that does not move. Each city passes from night into day at the gold line.
Geography · Unit 2 · Lesson 5 ·
Turn a 3D Earth under a fixed Sun and watch day and night sweep around it. See why clocks are set by time zones, what happens at the International Date Line, and work out what time it is on the other side of the world.
The Earth turns once a day, 15 degrees every hour, so the Sun is overhead at different places at different times. People divide the Earth into time zones so that clocks in one zone agree. Crossing the International Date Line changes the date by one day.
3D Model · 3D 模型
The Sun shines from the right and stays there. Press “Turn the Earth,” or drag the time slider, and the Earth turns from west to east. The gold line is the edge between day and night. The cities show the time on their clocks. Turn on the bands to see idealized time zones, one every 15 degrees, and the red line for the idealized date line. Real time zone borders are not drawn.
Drag to look around · 拖曳轉動視角 Scroll or pinch to zoom · 滾輪/雙指縮放
This 3D model needs WebGL, which this browser does not support. The time slider and the city clocks on the right still work, and so do the two activities below.
One second of the animation is one and a half hours. The Sun's direction is fixed; the seasons buttons tilt it north or south to show how the edge between day and night tilts too.
Land outlines: Natural Earth, 1:50m Land, version 5.1.2, public domain. City positions are rounded to one-tenth of a degree. Times are for idealized time zones without daylight saving time.
Reading ·
Suppose you call a friend in New York at three o'clock on a sunny afternoon in Taipei. Your friend answers sleepily, because in New York it is two o'clock in the morning. You are both talking at the same moment, yet one of you is in the afternoon and the other is in the middle of the night. How can that be?
The answer is that the Earth is turning. It spins once a day, from west to east, so the Sun seems to rise in the east and set in the west. At any moment, about half of the Earth faces the Sun and has day, and the other half faces away and has night. Because a full turn is 360 degrees and a day is 24 hours, the Earth turns 15 degrees every hour.
Long ago, every town set its clocks by its own Sun: noon was when the Sun was highest. That worked when people traveled slowly. But when trains began to cross whole countries, every station had a slightly different time, and timetables became confusing. So people agreed on standard time: everyone in a large area uses the same clock time, even if the Sun is not exactly overhead at noon.
Today the world is divided into time zones. The simplest picture is 24 zones, each 15 degrees wide, one hour apart. Time is counted from the prime meridian at Greenwich, using Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC. Taiwan's national standard time is UTC plus 8 hours, and New York uses UTC minus 5 hours in winter and minus 4 in summer. Real time zone borders are not straight lines. They bend to follow the borders of countries and regions, and some places even use half hours.
If you keep moving east through the time zones, your clock keeps moving forward. Go all the way around the world and you would gain a whole day. To fix this, people use the International Date Line, which runs roughly along the 180-degree meridian in the Pacific Ocean. When you cross it going west, the date jumps forward one day. When you cross it going east, the date goes back one day.
So when it is Monday afternoon in Taipei, it can still be Monday morning in London, very early Monday in New York, and Sunday evening in Los Angeles. Before you call someone far away, do a little geography: find their time zone, count the hours, and make sure you will not wake them up.

1883 · Railways ·
Before 1883, North American railroads ran on many local times. On November 18, 1883, station clocks were reset to a new standard time as noon arrived in each zone. Many towns heard noon twice that day, once by the old Sun time and once by the new standard time, so the Library of Congress calls it the Day of Two Noons.
Greenwich ·
Greenwich Mean Time is the average clock time at Greenwich. Today the world's reference is Coordinated Universal Time, UTC, which the Royal Observatory describes as the modern equivalent of GMT, never more than half a second different from it. UTC is kept by comparing atomic clocks around the world; the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in France combines their results.
Taiwan · 台灣
Taiwan's official time today is called National Standard Time, UTC+8. It is kept by atomic clocks at Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories on behalf of the Bureau of Standards, and dialing 117 plays it. But it has changed. According to the Taiwan Historica archive, from October 1, 1937 to September 21, 1945 Taiwan used Japan's time, one hour ahead. From 1946 Taiwan used summer time in many years, and it stopped in the early 1980s.
2011 · The Pacific ·
Because each country chooses its own date, the date line can move. At midnight on December 29, 2011, Samoa and Tokelau moved from the eastern side of the date line to the western side, to keep business hours closer to their trading partners in Asia and Oceania. For them, December 30, 2011 never happened.

Myth vs. Fact ·
The Sun travels around the Earth once a day.
The Earth spins toward the east, so the Sun only seems to cross the sky from east to west.
Time zones are straight strips, each exactly 15 degrees wide.
That is only the idealized picture. Real time zone boundaries bend to follow the borders of countries and regions, and some places use half hours.
An international treaty fixed the International Date Line.
According to NOAA, the date line has no legal international status; each country chooses the date it uses. That is why the line zigzags.
Exactly half of the Earth is in daylight at every moment.
Slightly more than half is lit, because the atmosphere bends sunlight around the edge. That is also why the line between day and night is fuzzy, not sharp.
