Seven continents
Seven colors for seven continents. Notice that Europe and Asia touch along a long stretch of land, and Africa almost touches Asia.

Geography · Unit 2 · Lesson 6 ·
Color the land of a 3D Earth by continent and the sea by ocean, then switch between different ways of counting them. See why the answer can be seven, six, or five continents, and four or five oceans.
Where the land and the water are is a fact of geography. How we divide them into continents and oceans, and what we call each part, is something people agree on. That is why there is more than one way to count.
3D Model · 3D 模型
The land is colored by continent. Choose a way to count the continents and watch the colors regroup. Turn on the oceans to color the sea, with four or five oceans. Tap any land or sea to see which group it belongs to. Only colors are used; no borders are drawn, and the lines between continents follow common conventions, not lines on the ground.
Tap the land or the sea · 點陸地或海 Drag to turn · 拖曳轉動
This 3D model needs WebGL, which this browser does not support. The buttons on the right still count the continents, and the two activities below work without it.
Continents ·
Oceans ·
The lines between continents and oceans are drawn by rules of thumb that follow common conventions (for example, the Ural Mountains, the Suez Isthmus, the Panama Isthmus, and 60 degrees south for the Southern Ocean). Other sources draw some of them a little differently.

Reading ·
Ask a class how many continents there are, and you may hear more than one answer. Many students say seven. Some say six, and a few say five. Here is the surprise: each of these answers is taught somewhere in the world. Which one is right depends on how you count.
A continent is one of the main divisions of land on Earth. But look at a globe, and you will see that the land does not come in neat, separate pieces. Europe and Asia sit on one huge piece of land. Africa is joined to Asia by the narrow Isthmus of Suez, and South America is joined to North America by the narrow Isthmus of Panama. The lines between continents were drawn by people, not by nature. National Geographic calls the line between Europe and Asia an imaginary one.
So there is more than one way to count. By convention, many people count seven continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia. Some geographers join Europe and Asia into Eurasia, which gives six. In some countries, students learn that North and South America are one continent, America, which also gives six. Join both pairs, and you get five: Eurasia, America, Africa, Antarctica, and Australia.
The oceans are counted in different ways too. The U.S. National Ocean Service puts it simply: “There is only one global ocean.” All the water is connected, and the names divide it into parts. For a long time, people named four oceans: the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian, and the Arctic. Today most countries also count a fifth, the Southern Ocean, which surrounds Antarctica from its coast to 60 degrees south. National Geographic began counting it in 2021, and in 2023 the International Hydrographic Organization approved a resolution recognizing it.
Whichever way you count, some facts stay the same. About 71 percent of Earth's surface is covered by ocean. Asia is the largest continent, with about 44.6 million square kilometers. The Pacific is the largest ocean: even without the South China Sea, it covers about 161.8 million square kilometers, more than all the land on Earth put together.
And Taiwan? In the seven-continent count, Taiwan is in Asia. Taiwan's Executive Yuan describes the island as lying in the middle of the East Asian island arc, with the Pacific Ocean to its east. Its main island and 21 smaller islands cover about 35,887 square kilometers, so Asia could hold more than 1,200 Taiwans. The next time someone asks how many continents there are, you can answer with a question: “How are you counting?”
