Drag a point around a 3D globe and read its latitude and longitude. See the two angles from the center of the Earth, find eight places from their numbers, and learn why one degree is not always the same distance.
Two numbers work like an address for any spot on Earth. Latitude tells how far north or south of the equator it is. Longitude tells how far east or west of the prime meridian it is. Both numbers are angles.

Drag the blue dot, or click anywhere on the globe, and read the two numbers on the right. The gold line is the dot's line of latitude and the blue line is its line of longitude. With “See the angles” on, the globe turns see-through: the gold wedge at the center is the latitude and the blue wedge is the longitude. The model draws only land, sea, and grid lines.

Reading ·
Imagine a ship far out in the middle of the ocean. There are no streets, no signs, and no buildings, only water in every direction. If the ship needs help, how can the sailors tell anyone where they are? On land we use addresses with street names and house numbers. The ocean has none of these. Luckily, the whole Earth has an address system of its own, and it needs only two numbers.
The first number is latitude. Picture a line around the middle of the Earth, halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole. This is the equator. Latitude tells you how far north or south of the equator a place is. It is measured in degrees, from 0 at the equator to 90 at each pole. Lines of latitude are circles that run east and west. They are also called parallels, because they never meet, and they get smaller as they get closer to the poles.
The second number is longitude. Lines of longitude, also called meridians, run from the North Pole to the South Pole. One of them is chosen as the starting line and is called the prime meridian. It passes through Greenwich, in London. Longitude tells you how far east or west of the prime meridian a place is, from 0 degrees up to 180 degrees. Unlike lines of latitude, all lines of longitude meet at the two poles.
Put the two numbers together and you have an address. Latitude is said first, then longitude. The middle of Taiwan is at about 23.5 degrees north, 121 degrees east. For more exact work, each degree is divided into 60 smaller parts called minutes. One degree of latitude is about 111 kilometers on the ground wherever you are. One degree of longitude is about 111 kilometers at the equator, but it shrinks toward the poles, where all the lines come together.
Why does longitude start at Greenwich? The equator is set by the way the Earth spins, so nobody had to choose it. The prime meridian is different. Any line from pole to pole could have been the starting line, and for a long time different countries used different ones. In 1884, delegates from 25 countries met in Washington, D.C., and voted to use the line through the observatory at Greenwich, which most ships' charts already used. The prime meridian is an agreement among people.
For sailors, latitude was the easy number. In the Northern Hemisphere, the height of the North Star above the horizon is about the same as your latitude. Longitude was much harder, because finding it means knowing the exact time. The Earth turns 15 degrees every hour, so a clock that keeps the time of a known place can tell a ship how far east or west it has sailed. In the 1700s, the English clockmaker John Harrison built clocks that could do this at sea. Today the satellites of GPS give your phone both numbers in a few seconds.
Questions ·
Lines of latitude are called parallels. Why does that name not fit lines of longitude?
Why did people have to hold a meeting to choose the prime meridian, but not the equator?
A place is at 60 degrees north. You walk along its line of latitude until your longitude has changed by one degree. Did you walk more or less than 111 kilometers? Why?

A degree is an angle, and its length on the ground depends on the direction. Slide the latitude from the equator to the pole. The gold box is one degree of latitude tall and one degree of longitude wide, drawn to scale. The numbers treat the Earth as a perfect ball with a radius of 6,371 km; the real Earth is slightly flattened, so real values differ by less than one percent.
At the equator the box is a square: one degree is about 111 km in both directions. The box keeps its height and loses its width. One degree of latitude stays about 111 km; one degree of longitude is 111 km times the cosine of the latitude. At 60 degrees, one degree of longitude is exactly half as long as at the equator. At the pole the box has no width at all. You could walk through all 360 degrees of longitude in a few steps.

1884 · A Vote ·
In October 1884, 41 delegates from 25 countries met in Washington, D.C., to choose one starting line for longitude. The vote for Greenwich was 22 in favor and 1 against, with 2 countries not voting. According to the Royal Observatory, Greenwich was chosen because it caused the least disruption: nearly two-thirds of the world's ships already used charts based on it. The same meeting agreed to count longitude in two directions, up to 180 degrees east and 180 degrees west.
1700s · A Clock ·
The Earth turns 360 degrees in 24 hours, which is 15 degrees every hour. So if a ship carries a clock set to the time of a known place, each hour of difference from local noon means 15 degrees of longitude. The hard part was building a clock that stayed accurate on a rolling ship. In 1714 the British Parliament passed the Longitude Act, offering rewards of up to 20,000 pounds for a solution. John Harrison completed his sea watch, now called H4, in 1759. It was tested on a voyage to Jamaica that began in 1761, and again on a voyage to Barbados in 1764.
Taiwan · 台灣
The Tropic of Cancer, at about 23.5 degrees north, runs across Taiwan. Taiwan's Tourism Administration lists three markers on the main island: in Shuishang Township in Chiayi County, on the Wuhe Terrace in Ruisui Township in Hualien County, and in Fengbin Township in Hualien County. At noon on the June solstice the Sun is straight overhead on this line, and a pole standing upright casts no shadow. The line is not fixed. It is drifting south by a little more than 14 meters a year, and in 1788 it ran through what is now a street corner in Chiayi City.

Visitors to Greenwich like to stand on the brass line that marks the historic prime meridian, with one foot in the east and one in the west. But a phone standing on that line does not read exactly zero. Satellite navigation uses a newer reference line, which passes 102.5 meters to the east of the old one. The old line was set by a telescope on the ground; the new one comes from measurements of the whole Earth. A degree of longitude is still a degree, counted from a slightly different zero.

Myth vs. Fact ·
A degree is a fixed distance, like a kilometer.「一度」是固定的距離,就像一公里一樣。
✓ Fact · 事實A degree is an angle. One degree of latitude is about 111 km everywhere, but one degree of longitude is about 111 km at the equator, about 56 km at 60 degrees, and nothing at the poles.「度」是角度。
The prime meridian is a natural line, just like the equator.
The equator is set by the Earth's spin. The prime meridian is an agreement: it was chosen by a vote at an international conference in 1884.
Lines of longitude are parallel to each other, like lines of latitude.
Lines of latitude are parallel and never meet. Lines of longitude are farthest apart at the equator and all meet at the poles.
If you stand on the line at Greenwich, your phone will show a longitude of exactly zero.
Satellite navigation counts longitude from a newer line about 102 meters to the east, so on the historic line a phone shows a tiny bit of west longitude.
