The water that falls on your umbrella was in the sea not long ago. How did it get into the sky, and why does it fall on one side of a mountain and not the other? In a 3D model, send moist air from the sea up a mountain, watch a cloud form, and find the hot, dry wind on the far side. Then work out how much water one storm really brings.
The sun turns water from the sea into a gas we cannot see, called water vapor. Warm air can hold a lot of it. When that air rises, it cools, and cool air cannot hold as much. The extra vapor turns back into tiny drops of water, and millions of them make a cloud. When the drops grow too heavy to float, they fall as rain.

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. This is an island seen from the side, with the sea on both sides and a mountain in the middle. The small dots are air, moving with the wind. Follow them from the sea, up the mountain, and down the other side, and read the three temperatures. Then change the height of the mountain and how warm and how humid the air is. Can you make the rain stop? Last, turn the wind around.

A teaching model. The mountain (600 meters or 2,500 meters high) is drawn much steeper than a real one. The temperatures use the Central Weather Administration's simple figures: air cools about 6.5°C for every kilometer it rises and warms about 1°C for every 100 meters it sinks. The cloud base and the dew point use rules of thumb. Real weather is much less tidy.

Reading ·
Rain seems simple: water falls from the sky. But how did the water get up there? The sky has no pipes and no tanks. The answer is that the water rose by itself, as a gas that you cannot see.
When the sun warms the sea, some of the water turns into water vapor and mixes with the air. Most of the water vapor in the air comes from the oceans. There is never very much of it, only about one part in a hundred on average, but it makes almost all of our weather.
Warm air can hold more water vapor than cold air. If air gets about 11 degrees warmer, it can hold about twice as much. This also works the other way. When air cools, it can hold less, and at a certain temperature it is full. That temperature is called the dew point.
So the secret of rain is rising air. Air cools as it rises, about 6.5 degrees for every kilometer. When it has cooled to its dew point, the extra water vapor turns into tiny drops of liquid water. A cloud is a huge crowd of these tiny drops. Inside the cloud the drops bump together and grow, and when they are too heavy to float, they fall.
What makes air rise? A mountain is one answer. When moist wind from the sea meets a mountain, the air has nowhere to go but up. Clouds form on that side, the windward side, and the rain falls there. By the time the air crosses the top, it has lost much of its water. It sinks down the other side dry and warm.
Taiwan shows this very well. A high wall of mountains runs down the island, and the wind changes with the seasons. In winter the northeast wind brings steady rain to the northeast, while the center and south are mostly sunny. In summer the wind turns, and the south gets most of its rain. The same mountains, the same sea: only the wind has changed.

Rain is measured by how deep the water would be if none of it ran away: 1 millimeter of rain on 1 square meter is exactly 1 liter. Choose how much rain falls in a day and what it falls on. Watch the name that the Central Weather Administration gives to that much rain.
The names follow the Central Weather Administration: 80 millimeters or more in 24 hours is heavy rain, 200 or more is extremely heavy rain, 350 or more is torrential rain, and 500 or more is extremely torrential rain. Shorter, sharper bursts count too: 40 millimeters in one hour is already heavy rain. The classroom roof (60 square meters) and the basketball court (420 square meters) are examples.

Winter · 冬天
From about November to March, the wind over Taiwan blows from the northeast. It has crossed the sea, so it is full of water vapor, and the first thing it meets is the mountains of the northeast. During these months the northeast gets steady rain, while the central and southern parts of the island are mostly sunny.
Air that has dropped its rain on one side of the mountains comes down the other side dry, and it warms as it sinks. The result is a hot, dry wind that people in Taiwan call the fire wind. It happens most often around Taitung, when a typhoon or a low passes north of the island and strong west winds blow across the mountains.
Summer · 夏天
A mountain is not the only thing that makes air rise. On a hot, humid summer afternoon, the ground heats the air above it, and the air shoots upward by itself. Tall, dark clouds can grow from 1 kilometer to 6 kilometers high in about ten minutes, and then the rain pours down.
A raindrop ·
We draw raindrops with a point on top, but real raindrops never look like that. Small ones are almost perfect balls. Bigger ones are pushed flat on the bottom by the air as they fall, like a hamburger bun. Very big ones break apart into smaller drops.
