How Did Taiwan's Mountains Rise?

Taiwan has 268 peaks higher than 3,000 meters, on an island you can drive across in a few hours. Where did they come from? In a 3D model, watch the push of a plate squeeze the seabed into mountains while rain and rivers wear them down. Then work out how tall the mountains would be if nothing ever wore them away.

Big idea ·

Taiwan's mountains were squeezed up out of the sea. The Philippine Sea Plate pushes against the edge of the continent, and the mud and sand on the seabed between them are piled up and lifted, a few millimeters a year. At the same time, rain and rivers wear the mountains down. How tall a mountain stands depends on which side is winning.

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. At the start there is only a shallow sea. The plate on the right pushes in, and the layers of mud and sand begin to pile up. Watch the peak climb toward the yellow line, which marks the height of Yushan today. Then change how fast the land is pushed up and how hard the rain wears it down. What happens if the pushing stops?

A teaching model with example numbers. Only one of them is measured: the piled-up rock of Taiwan is rising at about 5 millimeters a year. The other speeds, and the rule that taller mountains wear down faster, were chosen to show the idea. Heights are drawn about ten times too tall compared with widths, and a million years passes in about three seconds.

Unit 4: How Did Taiwan's Mountains Rise?

Stand on the west coast of Taiwan on a clear morning and look east. A wall of mountains fills the sky. The highest of them, Yushan, is 3,952 meters tall, and 268 peaks on this small island are higher than 3,000 meters. Yet a few million years ago, there was no island here at all. There was only the sea.

The mountains came from a slow collision. In Lesson 2 you saw that the Philippine Sea Plate pushes toward the northwest, about 7 centimeters a year. In front of it lay the edge of the continent, covered with thick layers of mud and sand under the water. As the plate pushed in, those layers had nowhere to go.

So they went up. Think of pushing a rug across the floor against a wall: the rug wrinkles and rises into folds. In the same way, the layers of the seabed were squeezed, folded, and piled on top of one another until they rose out of the sea. That pile is the island of Taiwan, and it formed only about 4 to 5 million years ago.

The pushing has not stopped. The piled-up rock is still rising, by about 5 millimeters a year. That sounds like nothing. But in a million years, 5 millimeters a year adds up to 5 kilometers. If that were the whole story, Taiwan's mountains would be taller than any on Earth.

They are not, because something is taking them apart. Rain, rivers, typhoons, and landslides break the rock and carry it downhill as gravel, sand, and mud. The steeper the slope, the faster the water runs and the more it can carry. In the lowlands the rivers slow down and drop their sand, and the plains where most people live are built from pieces of the mountains.

So a mountain is not a thing that sits still. It is more like a fountain: water is always rising and always falling, and the shape stays. Rock is pushed up from below and carried away from the top, year after year. The mountains you see are what is left over, for now, in a contest that is still going on.

Questions ·

What were Taiwan's mountains made from?

From layers of mud and sand on the seabed, which were squeezed, folded, and piled up when the plate pushed in.

The land rises about 5 millimeters a year. Why are the mountains not far taller than they are?

Because rain, rivers, typhoons, and landslides wear them down at the same time, and steep slopes lose rock quickly.

Where does the rock go when it is worn off the mountains?

Rivers carry it downhill as gravel, sand, and mud. Much of it is dropped in the lowlands, where it builds the plains.

4. Where does much of the worn-off sand and mud end up?

5. About how old is the island of Taiwan?

A Thought Experiment ·

What if nothing wore the mountains down?

Suppose the land rose 5 millimeters every year and no rain ever fell. How tall would the mountains be? Move the slider to choose how long the land has been rising.

This is only multiplication: 5 millimeters a year, times the number of years. At that speed the land would reach the height of Yushan, 3,952 meters, in about 790,000 years. Taiwan has been rising for millions of years, so most of the rock that was pushed up is gone.

Four places where you can see the mountains being made.

3,952 m

Yushan玉山

Yushan, or Jade Mountain, is the highest mountain in Taiwan at 3,952 meters. It stands among five rugged mountain ranges that run the length of the island, side by side, along the eastern two thirds of Taiwan. The flat western third is where most people live.

Taroko ·

A river with a saw

Taroko Gorge, in eastern Taiwan, was carved by the Liwu River. The river has cut straight down through marble, leaving walls of stone on both sides. It is a place where you can see both halves of this lesson at once: land that has been lifted high, and water that will not stop cutting.

1999

Four meters in a night

Mountains do not always rise smoothly. In the Chi-Chi earthquake of September 21, 1999, the ground broke along a line about 100 kilometers long, and in places one side was lifted as much as 4 meters. At 5 millimeters a year, that is about 800 years of rising, done in seconds.

4–5 Ma

A very young island

Geologists say that Taiwan formed about 4 to 5 million years ago. That is young. The Earth itself is about 4.5 billion years old, about a thousand times older. If the whole history of the Earth were squeezed into one day, Taiwan would appear in the last minute and a half before midnight.

Myth vs. Fact ·

Four things people get wrong

Mountains have always been there and never change.

Taiwan's mountains are only a few million years old, and they are still rising and still being worn down.

Taiwan's high mountains are old volcanoes.

Most of them are layers of the seabed that were squeezed and piled up when two plates collided.

If the land keeps rising, the mountains will keep getting taller.

  2. Put a book at each end. Hold one book still and slowly push the other toward it.
  3. Stop every few centimeters. Measure how far you have pushed and how high the folds have risen.
  4. Draw the layers from the side. Where are they bent the most? Did any layer end up on top of another?

The book you push is the Philippine Sea Plate. The book that stays still is the edge of the continent.

Classroom Activity 2 ·

Rain on a Sand Mountain

You need ·

  • A tray, damp sand, and a ruler
  • A watering can or a cup with small holes in the bottom

Steps · 步驟

  1. Build a steep mountain of sand at one end of the tray. Measure how tall it is.
  2. Make it rain gently over the peak for one minute. Measure the height again.
  3. Look at where the sand went. Draw the shape it made at the foot of the mountain.
  4. Now add a spoonful of sand to the peak every ten seconds while it rains. Can you keep the mountain the same height?

The spoonfuls of sand are the push from below. When what you add equals what the rain removes, the mountain stops changing height, even though the sand in it keeps changing.
