Three in the afternoon
The land is at its hottest, and the sea breeze is at its strongest.
Earth and Weather · Unit 2 · Lesson 7 ·
You cannot see the wind, but you can feel it push. Where does it come from, and why does it change direction between day and night? In a 3D model of a coast, move the clock and watch the sea breeze turn into a land breeze. Then move the calendar and watch the same thing happen across a whole year. Last, learn to tell the strength of the wind just by looking at the trees.
Wind is moving air, and the sun is what moves it. The sun does not heat every place the same. Land warms up quickly, and water warms up slowly. Over the warmer place, the air gets lighter and rises. Cooler air from the other place slides in along the ground to take its place. That sliding air is the wind.
3D Model · 3D 模型
Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. The sea is on the left, and the land is on the right. The small dots are air. Press Pause, then move the clock. Read the two temperatures, and watch which way the white arrow points. When does it turn around? Then choose One year and move the month. The same loop appears, but now it takes a whole year.
Drag to turn · 拖曳旋轉 Scroll or pinch to zoom · 滾輪/雙指縮放

A teaching model. The temperatures are example curves that we drew to show the idea: the land changes a lot and the sea changes a little. They are not measurements from any real place. The wind strengths in One day follow the Central Weather Administration (a sea breeze of about force 3 to 4, a land breeze of about force 1 to 2); the wind strengths in One year are examples. A real sea breeze loop is only a few hundred meters high, and a real monsoon covers a whole continent, so the two views are not drawn to the same scale. Real wind is also turned by the spinning of the Earth, which this model leaves out.

Reading ·
Hold your hand out of a window on a breezy day. Something pushes against it, but you cannot see anything there. That something is air. Air is real stuff, and when it moves from one place to another, we call it wind.
What makes the air move? The answer starts with the sun. Sunshine does not heat every place the same. Land warms up quickly, and it cools down quickly too. Water is slower. It takes a long time to warm up and a long time to cool down.
Think about a beach on a sunny day. By the afternoon, the land is warmer than the sea. The air over the land warms up, gets lighter, and rises. Cooler air from over the sea moves in along the ground to take its place. That is a sea breeze. It usually begins at about ten or eleven in the morning and is strongest at about two or three in the afternoon.
After the sun goes down, the land cools quickly, but the sea stays almost as warm as before. Now the land is the cooler side, so the air near the ground flows the other way, from the land out to the sea. That is a land breeze. It is weaker than the sea breeze.
The same thing happens on a much bigger scale across a whole year. In winter, the great continent of Asia becomes much colder than the ocean, and cold, dry air flows out from the land. In summer, the continent becomes much hotter than the ocean, and moist air flows in from the sea. A wind that changes direction with the seasons is called a monsoon. Taiwan lies inside one of the strongest monsoon regions in the world.
People name a wind for the direction it comes from. A north wind comes from the north, and a sea breeze comes from the sea. We measure its speed in meters a second, or we give it a number from 0 to 12 on a scale that sailors began to use more than two hundred years ago. So the next time the wind pushes your hand, you will know what is happening: somewhere, air is rising, and this air is on its way to take its place.

Read the Forecast ·
Weather reports in Taiwan give the strength of the wind as a number, such as force 6. The numbers come from the Beaufort scale, which tells the strength of the wind from what it does to smoke, flags, and trees. Move the slider and read what each number looks like.
The names, the descriptions, and the speeds follow the Central Weather Administration's Beaufort table for use on land. The table goes on to force 17, but above force 12 the levels have no names. The flag is only a picture.

Wind by the Numbers ·
From a breeze at the beach to a scale used around the world.
The sea breeze usually begins at about ten or eleven in the morning. At first it is weak.
At about two or three in the afternoon, when the day is hottest, the sea breeze often reaches force 3 or 4. The land breeze is usually only force 1 or 2.
A sea breeze usually reaches only about 20 kilometers inland, and 25 kilometers at most.
Sea and land breezes are shallow. They usually reach only 200 to 300 meters above the ground, and never more than 600.
A wind of 1 meter a second is the same as 3.6 kilometers an hour.
A British navy officer named Beaufort made the first version of the wind scale in this year. It was used at sea first and on land later.
Wind Stories ·
Four winds, and the same idea behind each one.
Afternoon · 午後
Sea breezes are strongest in the hot parts of the world. On the coast of the Gulf of Guinea in Africa, a cool breeze comes in from the sea at about two in the afternoon, just when the day is most uncomfortable. People there call this breeze “the doctor,” because it makes the heat easier to bear.
Winter · 冬天
In winter, cold air builds up over the continent of Asia and flows out toward the ocean. When it reaches the seas around Taiwan, it arrives as a northeast wind, and it is often quite strong. During this season, the north and northeast of Taiwan are often gray, with light rain.
Mountains · 山區
Mountains have a daily wind of their own. By day, the sun warms the slopes, and air climbs from the valley up the mountainside. This valley wind often carries water vapor to the top, where it forms a cap of cloud. At night, the slopes cool quickly, and cold air flows back down into the valley. That is why valleys are often misty just before sunrise.
Oceans · 大洋
The biggest loop of all starts at the equator, where the sun is strongest and warm air rises. That air sinks again at about 30 degrees north and south, and part of it flows back toward the equator along the surface. These winds blow from almost the same direction all year. In the days of sailing ships, traders crossing from Europe to the Americas depended on them, so they are called the trade winds.
