Some volcanoes pour out rivers of glowing lava. Others blow their tops off in a cloud of ash. What makes the difference? Cut a volcano open in 3D, choose what the magma is like and how much gas it holds, and watch four kinds of eruption. Then see why a bubble rising from deep underground grows hundreds of times bigger.
Deep underground, some rock melts into magma. Magma is lighter than the solid rock around it, so it pushes upward. It also has gas dissolved in it, like a bottle of soda. As the magma rises, the pressure drops and the gas comes out as bubbles that grow and grow. If the magma is runny, the gas escapes and lava flows out. If it is sticky, the gas is trapped until it explodes.
3D Model · 3D 模型
Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. This volcano has been cut in half so that you can see inside. Magma collects in the chamber at the bottom, and the pressure builds until it erupts. Choose runny or sticky magma, and a little gas or a lot. Watch the bubbles in the channel: they are tiny at the bottom and much bigger at the top.

A teaching model, not a real volcano. Real magma is not simply runny or sticky, and real eruptions do not come on a timer: the four kinds shown here are examples along a range, and one volcano can erupt in different ways at different times. The bubbles grow by the right amount for gas rising from 3 kilometers down, but they are drawn far larger than real ones.

Reading ·
Shake a bottle of soda and open it. You know what happens next. Before you opened it, the gas was hidden in the drink, held there by pressure. The moment the pressure was gone, the gas rushed out as bubbles and took the soda with it. A volcano works in much the same way.
It starts deep underground, where some rock is hot enough to melt. Melted rock is called magma. Magma is lighter than the solid rock around it, so it slowly pushes its way up. On the way it may collect in a large space called a magma chamber.
Like soda, magma has gas dissolved in it, mostly water vapor and carbon dioxide. Deep down, the weight of the rock above keeps the gas in. But as magma rises, the pressure drops, and the gas comes out as bubbles. The higher the bubbles rise, the bigger they grow. The magma swells, and it needs more room.
What happens next depends on the magma. Some magma is runny, a little like syrup. Bubbles slip out of it easily, and the lava flows quietly down the mountain. Other magma is thick and sticky, because it has more of a material called silica in it. Bubbles cannot escape from sticky magma. The pressure builds until the magma is blown apart into ash and broken rock.
Most volcanoes are found where plates meet, and many stand in a ring around the Pacific Ocean. Taiwan is on that ring. In the north, beside Taipei, is the Tatun Volcanic Group. Steam and gas still rise from the ground there, and scientists think magma may still lie below. Off the coast of Yilan, Guishan Island is a volcano too.
Volcanoes can be dangerous, but they also give us things. Water heated underground comes up as hot springs. Ash breaks down into rich soil. And scientists watch volcanoes closely, measuring small earthquakes, gases, and the swelling of the ground, so that people can be warned in time. A quiet volcano is not always a dead one.

The Soda Bottle ·
Squeeze a gas and it shrinks. Let go and it grows. Deep underground, the rock above squeezes very hard. Choose how deep a bubble of gas starts, and see how much bigger it is when it reaches the top.
This uses Boyle's law: when the pressure on a gas falls to a fraction of what it was, its volume grows by the same number of times. The pressure is an example worked out for rock about 2.7 times as dense as water, which adds about 265 atmospheres for every kilometer of depth. Real gas in magma also cools and stays partly dissolved, so real numbers differ.

Volcano Stories ·
Four reasons volcanoes matter in Taiwan.
Tatun · 大屯
The Tatun Volcanic Group rises at the northern edge of Taipei. Because it has not had a major eruption in more than a thousand years, many people thought it was extinct. But steam and gas still come out of the ground, and studies suggest that magma chambers probably still exist below. Today the Taiwan Volcano Observatory watches the group closely.
Guishan ·
From the coast of Yilan you can see an island shaped like a turtle. Guishan Island is a volcano, 361 meters high. The Central Weather Administration notes that the earthquake zone in northeastern Taiwan often comes with heat from the ground and shallow volcanic activity, as around this island.
Hot springs ·
A hot spring is groundwater that has been heated inside the Earth and has found its way back up. The heat can come from a body of magma not far below, or from water that sinks along cracks to hot rock deep in the crust and rises again.
The Pacific ·
Volcanoes are most often found where plates pull apart or push together. Around the Pacific Ocean, plate after plate pushes together, so volcanoes line its edges all the way around. This is the same ring that has most of the world's earthquakes, which you met in Lesson 2.
