The deepest hole people have ever drilled is about 12 kilometers deep. The center of the Earth is 6,371 kilometers down. So how do we know what is in between? Cut the Earth in half in 3D, travel down through its four layers, and see how earthquake waves show us what no one has ever seen.
The Earth has four layers. On the outside is a thin, hard crust. Under it is the mantle, thick and solid but able to flow very slowly. Deeper still is the outer core, made of liquid iron and nickel, and at the center is the inner core, a solid ball of iron. No one has been there. We learned it by studying how earthquake waves travel through the Earth.

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. In “Layers,” move the slider or press “Go down” to travel from the surface to the center, and read what each layer is like. Then choose “Earthquake waves” to see how the waves from one earthquake cross the Earth, and where they cannot go.

The mantle, outer core, and inner core are drawn to scale, using the Central Weather Administration's figures. The crust is not: at its true size it would be thinner than a line on your screen, so it is drawn about ten times too thick. The paths of the earthquake waves are simplified, and the land and sea on the outside are only decoration.

Reading ·
How far down can people dig? The deepest hole ever drilled is in the far north of Russia. Scientists worked on it for many years, and in 1989 it reached 12,262 meters, a little more than 12 kilometers. That sounds deep. But the center of the Earth is 6,371 kilometers below your feet. The hole did not even get through the outer skin.
That outer skin is called the crust. It is the hard rock we live on, and it lies under the oceans too. The crust is from 5 to 70 kilometers thick, and about 17 kilometers on average. If the Earth were an apple, the crust would be thinner than the peel.
Below the crust is the mantle, the thickest layer by far. It reaches down to 2,900 kilometers and makes up more than four fifths of the Earth. The mantle is solid rock, and it is very hot: 2,000 to 3,000 degrees Celsius. Over millions of years it flows, very slowly, and this slow movement helps push the plates of the crust around.
Under the mantle is the core, and it has two parts. The outer core is a deep ocean of liquid iron and nickel. As this metal moves, it makes the Earth's magnetic field. At the very center is the inner core, a ball of iron about 1,251 kilometers in radius. It is even hotter than the outer core, yet it is solid, because the pressure there is so great.
But if no one has ever been deeper than 12 kilometers, how do we know any of this? The answer is earthquakes. Earthquake waves travel all the way through the Earth, and they change speed and direction when the rock changes. One kind, the S wave, cannot pass through liquid at all. By recording the waves all over the world, scientists can work out what lies below.
In 1909 a scientist named Andrija Mohorovičić found the bottom of the crust this way. In 1936 Inge Lehmann studied earthquake records and discovered that the core has a solid center. Every large earthquake still teaches us something. We have never seen the inside of our planet, but we have learned to listen to it.

Four discoveries about a place no one has visited.
1989
On the Kola Peninsula in Russia, scientists set out to drill as deep into the crust as they could. In 1979 their hole became the deepest in the world, and in 1989 it reached 12,262 meters. A later attempt had to stop when the rock turned out to be 180°C, much hotter than expected.
1909
In 1909 the Croatian scientist Andrija Mohorovičić noticed something odd in his earthquake records: two sets of waves from the same earthquake. One set had come straight through the crust. The other had dipped down into faster rock and come back up. He had found the boundary between the crust and the mantle. It is still called the Moho.
1936
Scientists once thought the whole core was liquid. Then the Danish scientist Inge Lehmann studied the records of earthquakes in New Zealand. Some waves seemed to bounce off something deep inside the core. In 1936 she showed that the liquid core has a solid center.
The compass · 指南針
Why does a compass needle point north? The answer is in the outer core. Heat escaping from the core keeps the liquid iron and nickel moving, and the moving metal carries electric currents. Those currents make the magnetic field that surrounds the whole Earth.
