How Do We Know How Old the Earth Is?

The Earth is about 4.54 billion years old. Nobody was there to write down its birthday, so how can anyone know? The answer is hidden inside rocks, in atoms that change at a steady pace like the ticking of a clock. In a 3D model, watch 400 atoms change one by one, and learn to read the time from how many are left. Then squeeze the whole history of the Earth into a single day.

Big idea ·

Some kinds of atoms slowly change into other kinds, and they do it at a pace that never speeds up or slows down. The time it takes for half of them to change is called a half-life. So a rock carries its own clock. If we count how many of the old atoms are left and how many new ones have appeared, we can work out how long ago the rock formed.

3D Model · 3D 模型

A Clock Made of Atoms

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. This is a tiny piece of rock with 400 atoms in it. Green atoms have not changed yet. Gray atoms have changed. Let it play, and watch the green ones disappear. How many are left after one half-life? After two? Then choose a different clock. The pattern is the same, but the number of years is very different.

Drag to turn · 拖曳旋轉 Scroll or pinch to zoom · 滾輪/雙指縮放

  • Green: atoms that have not changed yet
  • Gray: atoms that have changed into another kind

A teaching model. The half-lives are real figures: about 4.47 billion years for uranium-238, about 710 million years for uranium-235, and about 5,730 years for carbon-14. Everything else is a picture. A real grain of rock holds far more atoms than 400, and they are not lined up in rows. With only 400 atoms, the count in the model wanders a little from the exact half, quarter, and eighth, so the model shows both numbers.

Unit 15: How Do We Know How Old the Earth Is?

How old are you? That is easy, because someone wrote down the day you were born. How old is a tree? You can count its rings. But how old is the Earth? Nobody was there at the beginning, and there are no rings to count. For a long time people could only guess.

The answer turned out to be inside rocks. Everything is made of atoms, and most atoms stay the same forever. But a few kinds are not steady. Sooner or later, an atom of one of these kinds changes into a different kind of atom. Uranium, for example, slowly changes into lead.

Nobody can tell when one single atom will change. But a rock holds a huge number of atoms, and for a huge number the pace is perfectly regular. After a certain length of time, half of the atoms will have changed. This length of time is called the half-life. After one more half-life, half of what was left will have changed, so a quarter remains. Heat, cold, and pressure do not change the pace.

This gives us a clock. Suppose a rock had uranium in it when it formed, but no lead. Today we measure it and find just as much lead as uranium. Half of the uranium has changed, so one half-life has passed. The half-life of the most common kind of uranium is about 4.47 billion years. This rock is very old indeed.

The oldest rocks of the Earth itself have been melted, crushed, and worn away, so scientists looked for something that formed at the same time and has not changed since. They found it in meteorites, pieces of rock from space that formed along with the planets. In 1956, an American scientist named Clair Patterson measured the uranium and lead in meteorites and got an age of about 4.55 billion years.

Today the age of the Earth is given as about 4.54 billion years, and other clues agree. The oldest grains of mineral ever found on Earth are about 4.4 billion years old, and the oldest rocks from the Moon are about as old as that too. A number that big is hard to imagine. One way is to squeeze the whole story into one day. On that clock, our own kind of human arrives less than six seconds before midnight.

Questions ·

What is a half-life?

It is the time it takes for half of the atoms of an unsteady kind to change into another kind.

A rock holds just as much lead as uranium. What does that tell us?

Half of the uranium has changed into lead, so about one half-life has passed since the rock formed.

Why did scientists use meteorites to find the age of the Earth?

The oldest rocks of the Earth itself have been melted and worn away. Meteorites formed at the same time as the planets and have not changed since.

1956

The man who dated the Earth

Clair Patterson wanted to measure the tiny amounts of lead in a meteorite, a piece of iron that had fallen in the Arizona desert long ago. The work was very hard, because lead from the air and from his own tools kept getting into his samples. He had to build one of the cleanest laboratories in the world before the numbers made sense. In 1956 he published the result: about 4.55 billion years. It has hardly changed since.

Australia ·

The oldest grains

In the Jack Hills of Western Australia there are tiny crystals of a mineral called zircon. They are smaller than a grain of sand, and very tough. The rocks they first formed in are long gone, but the crystals survived and ended up in younger rocks. Some of them are at least 4.4 billion years old. They are the oldest pieces of the Earth that anyone has found.

Moon · 月球

The Moon agrees

The Moon has no rain, no rivers, and no moving plates, so its old rocks have not been worn away or melted down like the Earth's. Astronauts brought some of them home. The oldest are about as old as the oldest grains on Earth, a little younger than the meteorites. Three different places give ages that fit together.

A clock for young things

Uranium is far too slow to tell the age of a wooden boat or an old bone. For those, scientists use carbon-14, which living things take in while they are alive. Its half-life is only about 5,730 years. After about 50,000 years there is too little left to measure, so this clock cannot reach back to the dinosaurs. Every clock has a range that it is good for.

A Half-Life with Coins

You need ·

  • 100 coins of the same kind (or 100 paper squares marked on one side) and a box with a lid100 枚相同的硬幣(或 100 張一面做了記號的小紙片),還有一個有蓋的盒子
  • Paper and a pen for a table and a graph

Steps · 步驟

  1. Put all the coins in the box. Close the lid and shake it well.
  2. Open the box. Take out every coin that shows heads. These atoms have “changed.” Count the coins that are left and write the number down.
  3. Close the lid and shake again. Each shake is one half-life. Keep going until no coins are left.
  4. Draw a graph: the number of shakes along the bottom, and the number of coins left up the side. What shape is the line?

You could not say which coin would come up heads, yet about half left on every shake. Now cover the table and show a friend only how many coins are left. Can your friend tell how many shakes you have done? That is how a rock is dated.
