How Do Fossils Form?

A fossil is a message from a world that is gone. But most living things leave no message at all. In a 3D model, follow one fish through six steps: it dies, it is buried, the mud above it turns to rock, its bones turn to stone, the land rises, and at last the rock wears away. Then learn to read a cliff like a book, and meet the rhinoceros that once lived in Taiwan.

Big idea ·

To become a fossil, a living thing must be buried quickly after it dies, usually by mud or sand under water. More layers pile on top and press the mud into rock. Water in the ground slowly carries minerals into the bones or shell and turns them to stone. Much later, the land may rise, and rain and rivers wear the rock away until the fossil shows. Every step is unlikely, so fossils are rare.

Six Steps to a Fossil

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. You are looking at a slice of the seabed. Let it play, or move the time slider yourself. Watch the fish, the layers above it, and the sea. Press the numbers 1 to 6 to jump to the end of each step. At which step do the bones change color? At which step does the sea disappear?

Drag to turn · 拖曳旋轉 Scroll or pinch to zoom · 滾輪/雙指縮放

This 3D model needs WebGL, which this browser does not support. The reading and the cards below still explain everything.

  • Pale: bone
  • Dark brown: bone that has turned to stone
  • Bands: layers of mud and sand that become rock

A teaching model. The six steps are in the right order, but the time is only a picture. In nature, burial may take days, while turning to stone, rising, and wearing away take from tens of thousands to many millions of years. The fish is drawn on the front face of the block so that you can always see it; in a real rock it would be completely hidden. Real fossils form in many other ways too.

Model drawn by My Culture Connect as a teaching diagram. The ideas follow the sources listed at the bottom of this page. ·

Unit 14: How Do Fossils Form?

In a museum you may have seen the bones of an animal that died long before there were any people. How can a bone last that long? The truth is that it did not. What you saw was a fossil, a copy of the bone made of stone. And it took a very special chain of events to make it.

It starts with a quick burial. When an animal dies, other animals usually eat it, and what is left rots away. To be saved, the body must be covered up soon, and this happens most easily under water, where mud and sand are always settling. Even then the soft parts rot. Usually only the hard parts, such as bones, teeth, and shells, are left.

Then come the layers. Year after year, more mud and sand settle on top. Their weight presses the lower layers together until they harden into rock. In a pile of layers that has not been turned over, the oldest layer is always at the bottom and the youngest is at the top.

Inside the rock, something slow and quiet happens. Water seeps through the ground, and it carries dissolved minerals. These minerals fill the tiny spaces inside the bone, and little by little they take the place of the bone itself. In the end, the bone has kept its shape, but it has turned to stone.

Now the fossil is deep underground, where nobody can see it. It may stay there forever. But sometimes the land is slowly pushed up, and the old seabed becomes a hill or a mountain. Then rain and rivers begin to wear the rock away, and after a very long time the fossil reaches the surface.

That is why Taiwan has fossils. Much of the island was once under the sea, and its rocks have been lifted and worn away. In the hills of Zuozhen, in Tainan, heavy rain often washes fossils out of the banks of the Cailiao River. People there have found the teeth and bones of elephants, deer, and even a rhinoceros that lived in Taiwan hundreds of thousands of years ago.

Questions ·

What must happen soon after an animal dies if it is going to become a fossil?

It must be buried quickly, usually by mud or sand under water, before it is eaten or rots away.

How do bones turn to stone?

Water in the ground carries dissolved minerals into the tiny spaces in the bones. The minerals slowly fill the spaces and take the place of the bone.

In a pile of rock layers that has not been turned over, where is the oldest layer?

At the bottom. The youngest layer is at the top.

Tap a layer of the cliff ·

The rule is called the law of superposition: in layers that have not been turned over, the oldest is at the bottom. It tells you which layer is older, but not how many years old it is. The next lesson shows how scientists find the number. This cliff is an example that we made up.

Tainan · 台南

The river of fossils

The Cailiao River runs through the soft hills of Zuozhen, in Tainan. After heavy rain, people there often find fossils lying in the riverbed, washed out of the layers in the banks. A Japanese professor who studied the area asked a local man, Chen Chun-mu, to help him collect them. Mr. Chen went on collecting for the rest of his life, and people came to call him Grandpa Fossil.

Taiwan · 台灣

A rhinoceros in Taiwan

There are no rhinoceroses in Taiwan today, but there once were. In 1971, an elementary school student in Zuozhen, Chen Shih-ching, found several rhinoceros teeth in the bed of the Cailiao River. A fossil collector guessed that they had been washed out of the mudstone beside the river, and that more of the animal might still be inside. Scientists from Taiwan and Japan then dug up a skeleton that was unusually complete. It is named the Hayasaka rhinoceros, and you can see it in museums in Taipei and Tainan.

England · 英國

The girl who found sea monsters

Mary Anning was born in 1799 in Lyme Regis, a small town on the south coast of England. The sea cliffs there are full of fossils, and her family was poor, so she collected fossils to sell. She became one of the most skilled fossil collectors of her time. Because she was a woman and had little schooling, the scientists who used her finds often did not give her credit. Today she is remembered as a pioneer.

Amber ·

Caught in tree sap

Not every fossil is made of stone. Some trees give out a sticky liquid called resin. Sometimes an insect was caught in it. Over a very long time the resin hardened into amber, a clear golden material, with the insect still inside. Amber can keep even the thin wings and tiny hairs that rock almost never keeps.

Myth vs. Fact ·

Four things people get wrong

A fossil is an old bone.

In most fossils the bone itself is gone. Minerals have taken its place and kept its shape, so the fossil is made of stone.

Every animal that dies becomes a fossil.

Almost none do. Most are eaten or rot away. A fossil needs quick burial and a great deal of luck.

✗ Myth · 迷思All fossils are dinosaurs.

Fossils of many kinds of living things have been found: shells, fish, leaves, wood, footprints, and insects in amber.

Fossils are found only in deserts far away.

Taiwan has fossils too. The hills of Zuozhen in Tainan are famous for them.

Classroom Activity 1 ·

Make a Fossil Print

You need ·

  • Modeling clay or soft dough, and a shell, a leaf, or a small toy animal
  • Plaster of Paris and water (ask an adult to mix it), and a paper cup

Steps · 步驟

  1. Press the clay flat in the bottom of the cup. Push the shell firmly into it, and then lift the shell out carefully.
  2. Look at the hollow that the shell left. Scientists call this a mold.
  3. Ask an adult to pour plaster into the hollow. Wait until it is hard.
  4. Tear the cup away and peel off the clay. What you are holding is called a cast.

The clay is the mud, and the plaster is the minerals that filled the space. Your cast has the shape of the shell, but it is not the shell. That is exactly what many fossils are. Never pour plaster down a sink.

Classroom Activity 2 ·

Layers in a Jar

You need ·

  • A tall clear jar, and three or four materials of different colors, such as sand, soil, flour, and fine gravel
  • A few small things to be the fossils, such as buttons or dry beans

Steps · 步驟

  1. Pour in one material to make the first layer. Drop one “fossil” against the glass so that you can see it.
  2. Add a second layer of a different color, with a different fossil. Keep going until the jar is nearly full.
  3. Ask a friend who did not watch: which fossil is the oldest? Which is the youngest? How do you know?
  4. Now tip the jar gently on its side. Is the rule still easy to use?

Your friend can tell the order but not the number of minutes between the layers. Real rock layers are the same: they give the order, and other methods are needed for the age in years.
