Earth and Weather · Unit 4 · Lesson 16 ·
Without its air, the Earth would be a frozen ball. A few gases in the air act like a thin blanket and keep the planet warm enough to live on. In a 3D model, follow sunlight down to the ground and follow the heat on its way back out, and see what the gases do to it. Then compare three worlds, and find out why a clear night is colder than a cloudy one.
Sunlight passes through the air and warms the ground. The warm ground sends heat back toward space, but this heat is a different kind of light, one that we cannot see. Some gases in the air let sunlight through but catch this heat. They send part of it back down, so the ground stays warmer than it would without them. This is the greenhouse effect. Without it the Earth would be too cold, and with too much it would be too hot.

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. Yellow dots are sunlight coming down. Red dots are heat leaving the ground. The gray balls are greenhouse gases. Watch one red dot at a time. Does it go straight out to space, or does something catch it and send it back? Then choose None, and then Much more, and watch the red dots again.

A teaching model. Two of its numbers are real: about −18°C for an Earth with no greenhouse effect, and about 15°C for the Earth today. About one third of the sunlight is sent back to space, as in the model. Everything else is a picture. Real greenhouse gases are spread all through the air, not gathered in one layer, and the chance that a dot of heat is caught was chosen to make the difference easy to see. The percentage in the panel is counted from the dots on the screen. It is not a measurement of the real Earth.

Reading ·
Have you ever opened the door of a car that has been standing in the sun? The air inside is much hotter than the air outside. Sunlight went in through the windows and warmed the seats, and the heat could not get out again. Something a little like this happens to the whole Earth, and it is a good thing that it does.
Start with the sunlight. Light from the sun passes easily through the air. About one third of it is bounced back to space by clouds, by the air, and by the ground. The rest is taken in, most of it by the ground and the sea, and it warms them.
Anything warm gives off heat, and the Earth is no different. The warm ground sends its heat back toward space. But this heat travels as a kind of light that our eyes cannot see, and the air treats it differently from sunlight.
Most of the air is nitrogen and oxygen, and they let this heat pass. But a few gases catch it. The most important one is water vapor. Carbon dioxide is another, and although it is only a tiny part of the air, it matters a great deal. A gas that catches heat sends it out again in all directions, so some of it comes back down to the ground. Clouds do the same thing. That is why a cloudy night stays warmer than a clear one.
Scientists call this the greenhouse effect, and the gases that do it are called greenhouse gases. Without them, the average temperature at the surface of the Earth would be about −18°C. With them, it is about 15°C. That difference of 33 degrees is the reason we have liquid water, green plants, and a place to live.
So the greenhouse effect is not a bad thing. It is a blanket, and the Earth needs one. But the thickness of the blanket matters. The planet Venus has air that is almost entirely carbon dioxide, and its surface is about 464°C. On Earth, the amount of carbon dioxide in the air has been measured carefully every year since 1958, and it has been rising. That is why scientists watch this number so closely.

1856
In 1856, an American scientist named Eunice Newton Foote filled glass tubes with different gases and set them in the sun. The tube of carbon dioxide grew hotter than the others. She wrote that if the air held more of this gas, the Earth would be warmer. Three years later, in 1859, John Tyndall in England showed in his laboratory how carbon dioxide and water vapor take in heat.
Name · 名稱
The name comes from the glass houses where farmers grow plants in cold weather. Both keep in the heat of the sun, but not in the same way. A real greenhouse is warm mainly because its glass stops the warm air inside from blowing away. So does a car parked in the sun. The Earth has no glass roof. Its gases catch heat that is traveling as invisible light. The name is a comparison, not an exact description.
1958
In March 1958, measurements of the carbon dioxide in the air began at an observatory high on the mountain Mauna Loa in Hawaii, far from cities and factories. The first reading was 313 parts per million. The measuring has never stopped, and the number has climbed year after year. The line it makes on a graph is called the Keeling Curve, after the scientist who started the work.
Taiwan · 台灣
You can feel the blanket yourself in winter. When a cold air mass reaches Taiwan and the sky clears, the ground sends its heat out all night with no cloud to send any back. The temperature falls quickly, and the coldest moment comes just before sunrise. Weather forecasters call this radiation cooling. On a cloudy night the clouds act as an extra blanket, and the morning is milder.

Be honest about what this shows. The covered jar is warmer mainly because the warm air cannot escape, which is how a real greenhouse and a parked car work. The Earth's blanket of gas does a different job: it catches heat that travels as invisible light. The result is alike, and the reason is not.
