Art · Unit 3 · Lesson 9 ·
Paint is colored powder plus something sticky. Pick a pigment from a stone, an insect, a plant, or a factory, mix it with a binder, and see which paint you get.
Paint has two main parts. The pigment is a fine colored powder that does not dissolve. The binder holds the powder together and sticks it to the paper, wood, or wall. Mix the same pigment with gum arabic and you get watercolor; with egg yolk, egg tempera; with linseed oil, oil paint. Pigments come from the earth, from living things, or from factories.

Choose one of eight pigments, then one of five binders. The strip of paper on the right is painted with the paint you made, over a black line, so you can see how much the paint covers. Each card tells you where the pigment comes from. This lesson has no 3D, on purpose. The things to compare are flat strips of color.

Reading ·
Open a box of paints and every color looks ready to use. But each one began as a powder. A pigment is a fine colored powder that does not dissolve in water. That is the difference between a pigment and a dye. A dye dissolves, like the color in a cup of tea, but a pigment stays as tiny solid grains.
Powder alone will not stay on paper. It brushes off. So painters mix the pigment with a binder, something sticky that holds the grains together and glues them to the surface. The National Gallery in London puts it simply: paint is made by mixing a pigment with a medium that binds the particles together.
The binder decides what kind of paint you get. Watercolor uses gum arabic, a gum from acacia trees. Egg tempera uses egg yolk, and most early Italian paintings were made with it. Oil paint uses a drying oil, such as linseed oil. Acrylic paint uses an acrylic polymer. Taiwan's glue painting, 膠彩, mixes pigments with animal glue. The same pile of yellow ochre can become any of these paints.
Where do the pigments come from? Many come from the earth. Ochre is clay colored by iron, and people were already mixing an ochre-rich paste about 100,000 years ago. Ultramarine was ground from a blue stone mined in Afghanistan, and the best of it could be worth more than gold. Azurite, called 石青 in Chinese painting, is a blue mineral that contains copper.
Other pigments come from living things. Carmine is made from cochineal, small insects that live on cactus plants in Mexico and South America. Indigo comes from the leaves of plants, and Chinese painters call it 花青. Shell white is ground from clam shells. Still other pigments are made in laboratories and factories. Prussian blue was made by accident in Berlin around 1706, and titanium white has been mass-produced since 1916.
Not every old pigment is safe. Lead white contains lead. Vermilion is made from cinnabar, which contains mercury. Gamboge, a yellow tree resin used in Chinese painting, is also poisonous. Over time, safer pigments such as titanium white took the place of some of these. Today the paints made for schools are chosen with safety in mind, but you should still wash your hands and never eat or drink while you paint.

Ultramarine was ground from lapis lazuli mined in Afghanistan, and it was the most brilliant and stable blue that painters had. The National Gallery in London says the best grades could be worth more than gold, and that patrons would often pay for the exact amount of ultramarine they wanted in a painting.
A paint maker in Berlin, Johann Jacob Diesbach, got a deep blue by accident. Prussian blue is described by the National Gallery as the first totally modern synthetic pigment made by a chemical reaction. He had been trying to make a red. Within a few years Prussian blue was on sale, and painters had a strong blue that was cheap and easy to make.

In glue painting, 膠彩畫, the pigments must be mixed with glue, which is how it got its name. Many of its colors are ground minerals and shells, such as 石青 from azurite, 石綠 from malachite, and 蛤粉 from clam shells. A Taiwanese scholar notes that Taiwan's glue painting came from Japan.
