Light adds: every lamp you switch on sends more light to your eyes, so the mix gets brighter, and red, green, and blue together look white. Paint takes away: every layer absorbs some of the light, so the mix gets darker, and yellow, magenta, and cyan together look almost black.

Three lamps, one red, one green, and one blue, shine on a white wall. Drag a spot of light to move it. On the right you can switch each lamp off or make it dimmer, and read the name and the numbers of each color. Then press Paint: the same wall gets three sheets of paint instead, in yellow, magenta, and cyan. Every color on the wall has a label, so you never have to tell colors apart by eye alone.

Reading ·
Squeeze yellow, magenta, and cyan paint onto a plate and stir them together. The mix turns into a dark gray that is close to black. Now go into a dark room with three lamps, one red, one green, and one blue, and point all of them at the same place on a white wall. That place turns white. Three colors of paint make something close to black, and three colors of light make white. Why are the two results opposite?
Start with the lamps. A wall in a dark room sends no light to your eyes. Switch on the red lamp, and the wall reflects red light back to you. Switch on the green lamp as well, and the place where the two spots overlap now reflects red light and green light together. More light reaches your eyes, so that place looks brighter, and it looks yellow. This is called additive mixing, because every lamp adds light. Red, green, and blue are called the primary colors of light. Red and green make yellow, green and blue make cyan, and red and blue make magenta. All three together make white.
Why yellow? The answer is in your eyes. At the back of each eye are cells called cones, and there are three kinds. Each kind responds to a wide range of light, but one is most sensitive to long waves, one to medium waves, and one to short waves. Your brain works out a color from how strongly the three kinds respond. A certain mix of red and green light stimulates the cones exactly as much as yellow light does, so your eyes cannot tell the two apart.
Paint does not make light. Paint gets its color from a pigment, and a pigment absorbs some of the light that falls on it and reflects the rest. White paper reflects almost all of the light. A layer of yellow paint absorbs most of the blue light. Magenta paint absorbs mostly green light, and cyan paint absorbs mostly red light. Lay yellow over magenta and both the blue and the green are taken away, so red is what is left. Each new layer takes away more light and the mix gets darker. This is called subtractive mixing.
Look again and you will see that the two sets fit together. Where two lamps overlap you get yellow, cyan, and magenta, and those are the three colors of paint in the model. Where two of those paints overlap you get red, green, and blue. A color printer uses cyan, magenta, and yellow ink for this reason. Real inks are not perfect, and the three together usually give a dark gray, so printers add black ink as well. A screen works the other way. Each pixel is usually made of three tiny lamps: one red, one green, and one blue.
In art class you may have learned a different set of primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. That set is older than modern color science, and it is still used in painting and in art lessons today. Printers use cyan, magenta, and yellow. Both sets are in use, and neither can do everything, because no three real paints, inks, or lights can mix every color there is. One more thing: the paint on this page is drawn by a screen, which means it is drawn with light. Try the same mixes with real paint and see how close the model comes.

Then try it yourself. Can you make white with only two lamps? Can you make the middle of the paint lighter without taking a sheet away?
Watch the lamps come on one at a time. Each overlap is brighter than the spots that make it, and the middle turns white.
Full red with full green is yellow. With the green lamp at half, the same overlap is orange. The amounts matter as much as the colors.
A ball blocks each lamp from a different side. Where only the red lamp is blocked, green and blue are left, and the shadow is cyan.
The lamps become sheets of yellow, magenta, and cyan paint. Each new sheet takes more light away, and the middle is almost black.

Game ·
Eight questions. In the first four you mix light: three sliders set the brightness of a red, a green, and a blue lamp. In the last four you mix paint: three sliders set how thick the yellow, magenta, and cyan layers are. Press Check to see how far apart the two colors are. Each slider then tells you, in words, whether it needs more or less.
Matched ·
The difference is a number called a color difference: 0 means the two colors are the same, and black and white are 100 apart. Here 6 or less counts as a match. The paint questions use the model above, so they are an illustration too.「差多少」是一個叫做色差的數字:0 代表兩個顏色一樣,黑和白相差 100;這裡 6 以內就算調出來。

In Your Eyes ·
People normally have three kinds of cone cells, named L, M, and S for the long, medium, and short waves of light they are most sensitive to. Their strongest responses are at about 560, 530, and 420 nanometers. Each kind still responds to a wide range of light, and the ranges overlap. That is why three well-chosen lights are enough to make so many colors.
In 1861 the physicist James Clerk Maxwell gave a lecture about color at the Royal Institution in London. For it, the photographer Thomas Sutton photographed a tartan ribbon three times: once through a red filter, once through green, and once through blue. Put together again, the three pictures made one color image. The plates of that time hardly responded to red or green light, so the result was far from perfect. It is remembered as the first durable color photograph.
In the Printer ·
In theory, cyan, magenta, and yellow ink together absorb all the light. Real inks are not perfect, and the three together usually come out dark gray. Black ink covers those unwanted tints in the dark parts of a picture, keeps fine details sharp, and saves the more expensive color inks when only black or gray is needed. The K in CMYK stands for that black ink.
In Your Class ·
Some people's cones work differently, and reds and greens can be hard for them to tell apart. The U.S. National Library of Medicine says that among people of Northern European ancestry this affects about 1 in 12 males and 1 in 200 females, and fewer in almost all other groups studied. A study of school students in Kaohsiung from 2019 to 2021 found it in 3.46% of the boys and 0.14% of the girls. That is why this page writes a name or a letter beside every color.

Myth vs. Fact ·
Red, yellow, and blue are the only real primary colors.
Several sets are in use. Light is mixed from red, green, and blue. Printing uses cyan, magenta, and yellow. Painters have long used red, yellow, and blue. No set of three real paints, inks, or lights can mix every color.
The more colors you mix, the brighter the result.
That holds for light, where each lamp adds more. With paint it runs the other way: each paint absorbs more of the light, so the mix gets darker.
A yellow patch on a screen sends out yellow light.
On a typical screen, the red and green parts of each pixel are lit and the blue part is dark. No part is yellow. That mix stimulates your cones the way yellow light does, so you see yellow.
