Most people draw the eyes too high. Turn a simple 3D head, switch on its proportion lines, and find out how much head there really is above the eyes.
When we draw a face, we often draw what we think a face is like, not what we see. The most common slip is putting the eyes too high. On an adult head, the eyes sit about halfway between the top of the head and the chin. Hair hides the top of the skull, which makes the forehead look smaller than it is. Proportions like these are a starting point for drawing, not a rule for how a face should look. Every face is different.
3D Model · 3D 模型
Drag the head to turn it, or choose a view. The yellow lines show where the parts of a face usually sit, and the table gives each line's height, measured down from the top of the head. Try the three kinds of hair, then press “Where beginners put them” to see a common mistake.

This 3D model needs WebGL, which this browser does not support. The table on the right still gives the height of every line, and the reading, the cards, and the games still work.

So measure real faces. Classroom Activity 1 asks you to measure with a pencil, and the faces in your class will not all match the model. That is the point.

Reading ·
Ask a friend to draw a face from memory. Very often, the eyes end up high on the head, with only a thin strip of forehead above them. The nose and mouth are fine, and each part looks right on its own. Yet the whole face looks a little strange, as if the top of the head had been sliced off.
Scientists have tested this. In 2014 two researchers asked many people to draw faces and found that the eyes were placed too high again and again. They even found the same slip in pictures of faces printed in well-known research articles. Knowing a lot about faces does not stop it.
So where do the eyes go? On an adult head, they sit about halfway between the top of the head and the chin. One university drawing guide adds a few more starting points. The bottom of the nose is about halfway between the eyes and the chin. The mouth is about halfway between the nose and the chin. The ears reach from the eyebrows down to the bottom of the nose.
Hair makes this harder to see. It covers the top of the skull and often part of the forehead, so the face seems to start lower than it really does. Hair also adds height on top. When you measure, imagine the shape of the skull under the hair.
Artists have studied proportions for a very long time. The Roman writer Vitruvius divided the face into three equal parts: chin to nose, nose to eyebrows, and eyebrows to hairline. About 1490 Leonardo da Vinci drew his famous Vitruvian Man and wrote measurements beside it. In 1528 the German artist Albrecht Dürer published four books on human proportion, based partly on measuring two to three hundred people.
But no real face follows the rules exactly. When scientists measured the faces of 153 young adults in North America, the old rules did not describe the average face. A baby's head has a very large skull compared with its small face. Proportions are a tool to help you see. The face in front of you is always the final guide.

Draw a face inside the outline from memory, without the lines. Then switch on the proportion lines. Where did your eyes, nose, mouth, and ears land?
Your drawing does not have to match the lines. If you chose to draw a face with different proportions, that is a choice. The lines only show where the parts usually sit.

Ancient Rome ·
The Roman architect Vitruvius wrote that the face can be measured in three equal parts. From the bottom of the chin to the underside of the nostrils is one third. The nose up to a line between the eyebrows is the same. From there to the lowest roots of the hair is also a third, the forehead.
Leonardo da Vinci drew a man standing inside a circle and a square, and wrote measurements around him. One says that from the hairline to the bottom of the chin is a tenth of a man's height. Leonardo started from Vitruvius, but he also corrected some of the ancient measurements, especially for the head.
The German artist Albrecht Dürer wrote Four Books on Human Proportion, published in 1528, shortly after his death. He did not rely only on old rules. In his own words, he based his figures partly on “two to three hundred living persons.” Even so, the first book alone shows five different types of men and five of women, not one ideal body.
Science · 科學
In 1985 a team measured the faces of 153 young adults in North America and found that the classical rules do not represent average facial proportions. In 2014 two psychologists asked people to draw faces and found that the eye position was always higher than in reality. Rules can be wrong, and so can our memory of a face.

Myth vs. Fact ·
The eyes are near the top of the head.
On an adult head they are about halfway between the top of the head and the chin. There is a lot of head above the eyes, much of it hidden by hair.
If you know a lot about faces, you will draw them right.
Researchers found the eyes drawn too high even in face pictures printed in well-known research articles about faces.
There is one correct set of face proportions.
Proportions are averages and starting points. Measurements of real people show that faces vary, and the old rules do not even describe the average face.
Children's faces have the same proportions as adults' faces.
A baby's skull is very large compared with its face. Faces change as people grow, so an adult guide does not fit a baby.
