Why Do We Need a Skeleton?

206 bones hold you up, protect your organs, and even make your blood. Take a 3D skeleton apart bone by bone.

Big idea ·

Your skeleton is a living frame. It holds you up, protects your organs, gives your muscles something to pull on, and makes new blood cells every day.

Unit 1: Why Do We Need a Skeleton?

Imagine for a moment that every bone in your body disappeared. You could not stand, sit up, or even hold up your head. You would slump to the floor like a pile of laundry. Some animals, such as jellyfish and octopuses, get along fine without bones, but they live in water, which helps hold them up. On land, a large animal needs a strong frame inside it. Your frame is your skeleton: about 206 bones, from the tiny ones deep inside your ears to the long thighbone in each leg.

The first job of the skeleton is support. Your spine, a stack of 24 small bones called vertebrae resting on a larger bone called the sacrum, holds up your head and body like the pole of a tent. Your pelvis passes that weight to your legs, and your legs carry it down to your feet. The second job is protection. Your skull is a hard helmet around your brain. Your ribs form a cage around your heart and lungs, and your vertebrae make a bony tunnel that shields your spinal cord, the bundle of nerves that carries messages between your brain and the rest of your body.

The third job is movement. Bones cannot move by themselves, but muscles are attached to them, and when a muscle gets shorter, it pulls on a bone. The places where two bones meet are called joints. Some joints, like your elbow and knee, bend in one direction, like a door on its hinges. Others, like your shoulder and hip, are ball-and-socket joints that let you swing an arm or a leg in a circle. Your hands are especially clever. Each one has 27 bones, which is why you can write, button a shirt, and pick up a peanut with chopsticks.

The fourth and fifth jobs are hidden inside. Many bones are filled with a soft tissue called marrow. Red marrow, which in adults is found mostly in flat bones such as the ribs, hips, and vertebrae, makes new blood cells, hundreds of billions of them every day. They include red blood cells that carry oxygen, white blood cells that fight germs, and platelets that help a cut stop bleeding. Bones also store minerals, especially calcium. When your heart and nerves need more calcium than your food provides, your bones release some into your blood.

It is easy to think of bones as dead, dry sticks, like the skeleton that hangs in a science classroom. But the bones inside you are alive. They have blood vessels and nerves, which is one reason a broken bone hurts so much, and they are always rebuilding themselves. Some cells break down old bone while others build new bone, so over about ten years, most of an adult's skeleton is replaced. A newborn baby has around 300 bones and bony parts. As a child grows, many of them join together, which is why an adult has only about 206.

Because bone is alive, it responds to how you treat it. When you run, jump, and play, the extra force tells your bones to grow thicker and stronger. Astronauts who spend months in space, where their bones carry almost no weight, lose bone and must exercise every day to slow the loss. Your bones reach their greatest strength by your late twenties, and much of it is built while you are still in school. So move every day, and eat foods with calcium, such as milk, tofu, small dried fish, and dark green vegetables. Then try this: count the bones in one of your hands.

Questions ·

Why can a jellyfish live without bones, when a large land animal cannot?

The jellyfish lives in water, which helps hold its body up. On land, nothing holds a large body up, so it needs a strong frame inside it.

Name the three parts of the skeleton that protect organs, and say what each one protects.

The skull protects the brain, the ribs protect the heart and lungs, and the vertebrae protect the spinal cord.

Why does an adult have fewer bones than a newborn baby?

A newborn has around 300 bones and bony parts, and many of them join together as a child grows, leaving about 206 in an adult.

Myth vs. Fact ·

Four things people get wrong

Bones are dead and dry, like sticks.

Living bones have blood vessels and nerves, and cells inside them are always tearing down old bone and building new bone.

Babies have fewer bones than adults.

It is the other way around. A newborn has around 300 bones and bony parts, and many join together as the child grows.

Bones are solid all the way through.

Most bones have a hard outer shell and a light, honeycomb-like inside, often with marrow in the spaces. That makes them strong but not too heavy.

Once you are grown, your bones stop changing.

Adult bones keep rebuilding themselves all through life. Exercise makes them stronger, and months without using them, as in space or in a cast, makes them weaker.

Bones in a sentence

Breakfast at 7, lunch at 12, dinner at 5早餐 7 點、午餐 12 點、晚餐 5 點

That is how many vertebrae you have in each part of your back: 7 in the neck, 12 in the chest, and 5 in the lower back.

More than half in your hands and feet

27 + 27 + 26 + 26 = 106. More than half of your bones are in your hands and feet.

The radius is on the thumb side

Hold your hand out, thumb up. The radius runs to your thumb and the ulna to your little finger. Turn your palm over, and the radius crosses over the ulna.

Everyday names for big bones

Femur = thighbone, patella = kneecap, clavicle = collarbone, scapula = shoulder blade, sternum = breastbone. Doctors use the first names; everyone else uses the second.
femur=thighbone(股骨)、patella=kneecap(髕骨)、clavicle=collarbone(鎖骨)、scapula=shoulder blade(肩胛骨)、sternum=breastbone(胸骨)。醫生用前面那個名字,一般人用後面那個。

In Chinese ·

Sinews and Bones in Chinese

Chinese often talks about bones together with 筋 (jīn), the sinews that tie muscles and bones together. Someone healthy and strong has good 筋骨, and a serious injury is 傷筋動骨, “hurting the sinews and moving the bones.” A common saying, 傷筋動骨一百天, says such an injury takes a hundred days to heal. It is a saying, not a medical rule, but it makes the same point doctors do: bones heal, but slowly.

Classroom Activity 1 ·

Why Are Bones Shaped Like Tubes?

You need ·

  • Three sheets of the same printer paper
  • Tape
  • A stack of light books or notebooks

Steps · 步驟

  1. Fold one sheet into a flat strip, fold one into a square column, and roll one into a round tube. Tape each one so it keeps its shape.
  2. Stand each one on its end and gently place books on top, one at a time.
  3. Count how many books each shape holds before it bends.
  4. Ask: the same paper, the same weight. Why does the round tube hold the most? Where in your body are the tube-shaped bones?

Teaching tip: then turn the 3D model to the legs and arms. The long bones are hollow tubes filled with marrow, strong for their weight like the paper tube.

Classroom Activity 2 ·

The Rubber Chicken Bone

You need ·

  • A clean chicken drumstick bone (boil it and scrub off the meat)
  • A jar with a lid, and enough white vinegar to cover the bone
  • A second clean bone to compare

Steps · 步驟

  1. Try to bend the bones. They are hard and stiff.
  2. Put one bone in the jar, cover it with vinegar, and close the lid. Leave the other bone dry.
  3. After three days, pour out the vinegar and add fresh vinegar. Wait about three more days.
  4. Rinse the bone and try to bend it again. Compare it with the dry bone. What did the vinegar take away?

Teaching tip: the vinegar dissolves the calcium, leaving the soft, bendy framework behind. Bones need both: calcium for hardness and the framework for toughness. Wash hands after handling raw chicken.

This lesson is for learning about the body. It is not medical advice. If you think you have hurt a bone, tell an adult and see a doctor.
